Having looked briefly at the Beeston catalogue I am dismayed that a Welsh stud have entered 2 - 19 year old mares one of which appears to have been home bred. The description for this mare reads "who has given sterling service". What a way to treat an old servant - chuck it in a sale and let it take its chances - realistically what are its chances? Knackerman??

Very well bred mares. What a shame. If I was in a position to take some more I'd be interested but I'm full to bursting.
I do hope someone buys them and gives them a good home.
A few 4 month olds going through also.

Lets hope its good advertising. There are so many a Fayreoaks, perhaps these will stand a better chance at a different market. I have bought and loaned a couple of older brood mares but not as old as 19.

I bought a 21yr old mare last year, she's a lovely lady but sadly don't think she will make the winter. At least she will get a dignified end, i will make sure of that.

If I had my own place and more money this is what I would do. Buy the older ponies and even if they had 12 months at least it would be a happy 12 months and as brt said a dignified end :-(

May get shot down here but unfortunately that's what some studs / people do " clear out the old " in fear of possible vets bills ! I for one wouldn't and couldn't do it but some others have different ideas or circumstances !

Not fair on old ponies who have always lived in one home and probably never travelled to be stressed at a market. My 20 year old will be put down at home when it comes to it. Saw a 21 year old horse advertised on a sale site and the owner put" sad sale" and how upset she was!! Oh dear.

Mari is partly right - this stud is clearing out the old but not to save vets bills. The stud owner is a vet. This appears to be a case of lets see if we can get a few quid for them regardless of the stress it will cause or what may happen to them.

Does anyone know what happened to the old mares? I think it is disgusting for a mare that has been on a farm all her life, to be dumped in this way, even worse to hear the owner was a Vet. If he is a practising Vet I am sure the Royal College of Vet Surgeons would be interested to hear about the unethical treatment of his animals.

There is another thread running with prices and discussion on the older mares.

Poor?? Ill treated?? Just because someone is a vet and sells a pony which is old does not give anyone else the right to decide that they have been unethical. Please explain how they have been unethical and what the hell it has got to do with Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons??? Please get real.

Philippa, I suggest you get real, it is in my opinion and I would think many others, morally wrong and unethical to send such an old horse to a horse sale.
Owners that send old horses to market just want to earn a bit more money out of them, rather than caring for them in old age, and sending them to market with no reserve puts them at risk of getting in the wrong hands or going to the slaughterhouse.
Vets take an oath and are expected to maintain the high standards that the RCVS promote, doing everything in their power for the welfare of the animal... well dragging an old mare to market to meet an uncertain future is not in the welfare of the animal, it is in the welfare of his pocket, as a Vet it would not cost him hardly anything to treat her if she was ill and PTS at home when the time eventually came.
