Calcutts and son for me I would not use any one else. They are all hand made for horse and rider. Agree. Have had several over the years from them, and would not consider anyone else (unless Di was no longer working for them....)

Ideal saddles are best, and yes ideal do make some of fylde saddles but not all of them, ask peter he will tell you who makes them. can anyone tell me is peter from fylde or any of his staff are qualified saddle fitters and reg with the master saddlers i do not seem to be able to find them listed. he does seem to get the thumbs up from a lot of people.

i have just been on the ideal web site, and it says they make the Fylde saddle called Samantha and the Haydon, they are Flyde own design. it also says if you buy a flexi curve from any stationary shop or get a coat hanger and mould it round your horse then they can make a saddle to fit your horse. before i get slated i do know what im talking about,i work in a saddlery with a reg with the master saddlers and quailified saddle fitter, how can you get a saddle to fit without any training from a picture/drawing you send ,hoof balance and conformation all play a vital part when templating and fitting a saddle as well as girth groove. makes all the training my boss has done for the last 5 years a waste of time when all you need is a coat hanger im really shocked that people trust this as a perfect fit. there must be some very understanding horses that put up with a lot of pain and discomfort ,all for the sake of a call out fee of approx £40.00 from a qualified and reg saddle fitter.

horses will only be in pain if there saddles do not fit. if the fit was done by a drawing sent in the post taken from a coat hanger or flexi curve and saddle put on horse without the trained saddle fitter there to check, im not sure that is a very safe thing to do for rider or horse. I also have a few fylde saddles and also ideal mine were fitted by a qualified saddle fitter (my boss )who is reg with the master saddlers and quailfied to fit and check mine and others saddles. im sure there are people who have saddles fitted by means of a drawing sent in the post that do not know if they fit or not,and do not get me wrong there are many people that class them self as saddle fitters that cripple horses too we see them far to often, that is why i use a qualified and reg saddle fitter. i myself have had horses for well over 30 yrs and would not class myself suitable to say that my saddles are fitting, hence why i have someone to check that has been trained and passed the exams to do so. Britts im glad you are happy with the service you received ,if only horses could talk. we could discuss this all day im sure, its at the end of the day my views and i would have a fitter out to see the horse and how it goes rather than draw a picture of its shape ,after all if you dont put the flexi curve in the right place it wont fit will it ,also how many people know what length of saddle to buy, how many people really know where the last rib is etc some ponies are so fat you cant even feel the ribs. but what do i know i must tell my boss im giving her the sack and save myself a few quid. im off to buy a flexi curve.

I like Ideal the best, but I have just bought a field house VSD as a general saddle for my horse, its really compfy and has a enough knee roll to jump in.

fylde but i do have a beautiful made to measure saddle from Barker saddlery that Barry made for my old lead rein pony. i use it now on my 13hh show hunterpony/M&M. such a shame that Barry has passed away he was such a nice man and always made shows so much more fun with Barney and his team. he was such a laugh and i will always have happy memories of Bath&West in the mud,Shropshire&West Mids,Three Counties,Ponies UK champs&many more shows. RIP Barry a great saddler and a lovely man x

I think you should have your saddle checked by a proper registered saddler regulalry as ponies change shape, the physio said that the majority of back problems in horses is caused by ill fitting saddles.

I have a made to measure saddle and it is brilliant. He is a wonderful saddle fitter and if my pony changes shape he will come out and re-measure him and alter the saddle.
Alot of people i know have had fyldes and had lots of problems with them as they werent fitted properly.
I used one on my gelding and it fitted him awfully.

we have so much tack from Barry. he made a saddle for my sister's old 13.2 show pony but unfortunately that was stolen by the Johnsons! and he made one for my sisters old 12hh lead rein/open show hunter pony. both were beautiful saddles and great to ride in.

What about Nathaniel Underwood? Fantastic saddler, I have two beautiful show saddles made by him both flocked and comfortable for both pony and rider; much better than a lot of the hard, flat panel saddles! They may look OK but as hpak says, that's as far as it goes!

Personally for my bottom - Ideal - had 2 Fylde saddles and ended up replacing them with Ideal as I was never comfortable BUT for a child I think the Fylde Samantha is the better one.

Fylde are only the best for showing saddles, Ideal which are the same designs more or less are better for everyday riding as they do put more stuffing in them and are more comfortable. You certainly wouldnt use fylde saddles for hacking whereas the ideals are perfect!

daughter has a ray for the connie and a samantha for the sp - both lovely saddles and she hacks out, jumps and does dressage in them, if you and the pony are happy theres no reason not to use them for all activities
