trouble is its extremely expensive putting on these shows esp if you are using judges that are affiliated and live away - we always have different judges at each of our shows as no point is using the same judges time and time which does mean B & B and lots of mileage costs as well as the cost of the arena and rosettes, feeding judges etc - its costs a huge amount of money - sometimes over 1500 for costs to put on a 1 day show.

£1500 is cheap normally nearer 3 - 4000 for a show with plenty of classes & affiliations etc

we get the pre show costs done with sponsors money, but rest are very good companies that let me pay the remainder after the day, we have a ok reputation for getting thenig paid, so first few entries will go towards bills etc, we have sponsors but would cover about 20% of total costs, rest also comes out of other halfs pocket pre show, im hoping to reclaim a tad this year as sadly due to the wet year it left owing us personally a substantial amount so if i can get some back if a bumper show would be nice, as i do everything voluntarily and cant really afford to be drastically out of pocket, though if i let other half know how much we actually have put in over last 4 years i would be single, if any generous benefactor or sponsor fanicies giving us a generous donation, it really does help alot, our trophies & rosettes alone are £1200 with insurance, judges, toilets, equipment & field hire, paramedics , printing costs ( though am home printing so more ink costs) Affiliation WPCS is 185 alone, and we also have chaps vhs & ncpa, plus food for on the day, paperwork, stamps ( another thing that can be donated if anyone has any spare) so yes soooooon mounts up, hoping for a goo dry show this year another one will mean show basically wont run anymore We have moved venue to one at less than half the cost this time in a cost saving event, we dont spend money willy nilly, and will beg borrow steal and kidnap !!!!!!! Where we can people & equipment ( ok not steal but borrow )

I agree about the fact that children have to learn to win and lose gracefully but can i just say, i know a few little girls that work their bums off helping mum to prepare for shows etc. When they dont get placed they are upset, not because they are SPOILT BRATS! but for the fact that they have nothing to show for the hard work they have put in on the show day and preparing for the show. Surely a 73p rossette and a kind word of encouragement/ why they werent placed would teach them to lose gracefully and make it worth while for them? In my eyes it is penny pinching, not teaching children or even adults in fact to lose greacfully

I was at our local riding club show yesterday, they only charge £4 for member and £6 for others. The rossetes are lovely, with sashes and a trophy for the Champion. Most of the ponies are well loved ordinary ones, they are never going to HOYs etc. Most of the children( and indeed some of the adults) just want a rossette of some sort, it doesn't even matter what colour. I asked one little girl had she had a good day, she said yes she got a 5th and a 6th, and she was very happy with that. I did not hear one raised voice or moan all day. The horse and pony that were the Champions of the day were better prepared and turned out than the rest but not so much that they could be accused of pot hunting. Children do have to learn they are not always going to win, but some parents may have not the knowledge or the money to get their child ever to the top of the line any way. If giving them a 73p rossette makes them happy why not, there are lots of adults who get high placings who are still unhappy if its not a 1st rossette , I have seen a top producer of M&M's walk out on the ring and put her rossette in the bin whilist the judge was giving out the rest of the rossettes, that's what I call sportsmanship. I think a child learns more from how adults accept defeat, when my children were small we did mounted games nearly every weekend, as my daughter was nervous and didn't like to go too fast we went at her pace and were nearly always last, but I used to tell her that taking part was what mattered and having fun. When she got older and we got faster we once came 2nd, stupidly I said if we'ed just gone a just bit faster we could have won.' but Mummy 'she said 'its just a bit of fun'
