I am in a right filthy mood I am enjoying a really good moan Why can I not find one decent Dressage horse, to go and look at under £10,000? Most of the ones I like are £12500 to £15000. I am not talking Made horses, either! Just 4 year olds! I thought we were in a RECESSION ? Everyone keeps saying its a buyers market, but since my poor little "Arrow" failed the vet, I have looked at 10 horses and havnt even got on a single one! All VILE.... MOAN OVER - I will now just sulk quietly, while you all go off riding/showing/hacking etc. What can be more fun, than escorting my boys on their ponies riding a push bike

Perhaps you should widen your criteria and look at horses rather than those labelled as 'dressage' horses. £10,000 sounds reasonable for a four year old ready to start out, but maybe not for a made horse.
Just because there is a recession doesn't mean people can reduce their costs and I think people who have this mindset are unrealistic - however no doubt some people will have to sell and thats maybe where there could be some bargains.
ALso it may be that if you are prepared to travel a bit you'll find you have a better selection. In the far south or up north horses can be for sale for ages just because no one can be bothered to come and view, maybe worth a rethink even if you have to pay for air fares, bribe someone to look after the kids for a days etc.
Good luck.

The £12,500 horses I have liked are the unmaid 4 year olds! I know I have expensive taste, as have been lucky enough to have had 2 extremely beautiful / talented WB's in a row. I always train my own horses, from babies, so thats not a problem, but I was SURPRISED that people were asking £12,000 to £15,000 for newly broken 4 year olds.
Maybe I am just out of touch?
Goodness me, what kind of "persuasion" am I going to have to do, to get that kind of money of the hubby?
Keep looking around I think, just stay grumpy and sad!

I know! I am acting like a spoilt brat. Most the time, I manage to be well behaved and not sulk too much. But every-so-often, I allow myself some SELF PITY I wont bore you with my sob stories, as I know we all have them, but those that know me, understand I have a right to be a "little" sorry for myself. I thought this area was where we are ALLOWED to moan, so I thought it might to "theraputic" to WALLOW for a bit, before putting on the happy face ;D I shall drag my Halo, back out of the bush I threw it in, and stop WALLOWING........OK?

lovepink if you want to wallow thats fine by me. No one really has a clue about some of the things people put up with so as you're in the moaners area I'm sure its fine, if you really like wbs thats fine as well, personally - as this is the moaners area I'D Go for a nice partbred with some native blood as well for good measure and that would be well within your budget - if of course you could find one.

Lovepink, i know it sounds silly but have you tried your local free ads paper?
I got my superstar pony from a one line advert in a local free ads paper, it was the only place he was advertised. He is a dressage demon and showing diva.

Thanks guys! I did think putting this thread up might be a bit like "therapy", but cheaper!
I have been recommended to try Astrid Boltons yard, which is 5 hours drive from Hampshire. She does have some really nice horses, in the right price range, but do you all think I should drive 5 hours?
I have been checking out all the local papers and websites too. No luck.
I just took Violet to be scanned too and they FORGOT me and went out! I stood like a "wet lettice" for half an hour till they came back. Thankfully, she is in season, so will be AIed later in the week.
I am still in a VILE mood though!

Astrid is just around the corner from me and has some VERY nice horses and usually very good at matching horses with clients.
She has a website though if you fancy a look before you make the 5 hour trip. ;D

Do you think Astrid would pop one in the post for me, to have a look at? Interlink or similiar? I have looked on her website and they are just lovely, but not sure how I am going to make this mammoth journey, bearing in mind kids/horses etc, Violet back and forward to be AIed. Is there a plane airport nearby? I wonder if I could fly from Eastleigh? Hubby will go bonkers! I keep finding really nice horses up in Lancashire. Do you steal all the good ones up there? Whats wrong with letting us Southerners have some?

A friend of mine is looking for a four year dressage horse too, she was grumbling about the prices. Why dont you look abroad??

I did think about going abroad, but it seems a big risk. If you buy from a reputable dealer over here and there is a problem, as soon as you get it home, you have a certain amount of comeback. Not sure that you would fare as well dealing with a problem in a different country? The horse I was buying "Arrow" had a CLEAN vetting in Holland, before being imported. Now he is vetted in England with a heart murmur. The importer has been emailing and telphoning the person she bought him from, but getting no response

don't give up - I found my old 12.3 SP from a small advert in the free-ads for £500! he was small and a bit thin, and was being bullied by the younger horses in his field, but when i rode him he had an amazing stride and was so good we bought him even though his owner said DON'T ride him at shows, cos he gets excited - i took him anyway and he was as calm and gentle as a baby........look for that hidden something and you will find the right horse!

Go to Astrid - it will be worth the trip
We have spent weeks driving all over the country looking at absolute RUBBISH for our budget of £7,000. I cannot believe how expensive decent horses are compared to ponies.

I know how you feel. I had the same problem (but on a MUCH smaller budget)! I gave up on finding any of these horses that were supposedly being dumped on all the charities as they had none, and everyone seemed to want a lot of money for therir horses that they needed desperately to sell. In the end I found one by word of mouth for £1000! And I couldn't be more delighted with her- so don't give up, and you can always make an offer!

guest, im not sure about that!!! ponies are blooming expensive, friend looking at a novice first ridden for 6500!!!!!! for a decent show pony you would need a second mortgage!!

The thing is, ponies do get grown out of dont they. Really good horses just dont get sold, unless the owner has problems of some sort. 9 times out of 10 when that happens, the horse is SO GOOD, that people who know of it, snap it up.
I still havent found a horse to even go look at this week! I have emailed Astrid who said she will get details of new horses to me later in the week.
Plane ticket is £200 or its a 5 hour drive or more on the train. I will go though, if nothing turns up soon. I am getting a fat belly, through lack of riding YUK....!

Lovepink have you picked up a copy of horsedeals magazine? usually have plenty in there xx I look online every day! The new editions are added each morning. Still nothing under 10,500 I like on there. Not heard back from Astrid Bolton, so think what she has not suitable, as advertised in the H&H today, the one I thought was possible I have seen a few kind of ok ones, but they are 16'3 and at 5ft4, I really dont need a horse THAT BIG. Takes a long skinny leg to ride a big horse, and I have never had long skinny legs in my life! Even before children! The next couple of days, I have to carry on taking Violet back and forth to stud, for the AI, so that will keep me busy, but after Sat, I am going to start really MOANING again!
