I think the difference is, when you're a guest you can have a different name every time you post, if you choose. You could of course use your real name if you so chose.
If you post as a member, you have the same username for every post, so although people might not know your identity, they can match posts on different threads to the same person. Which does encourage people to behave themselves!

I think people who register, even if they use a 'false name' are more 'traceable'. I dont think it necessarily matters whether we all know who everyone is or not its the people who just come on to stir up trouble who are the problem, and maybe if they were traceable, had to give an email address etc, they wouldnt stir things up so much. My theory has always been - if you wouldnt say it to someone's face - then dont say it behind their back (but then I suppose I dont hide behind a false name!)

Am I right in thinking there are more members posting these days Milliesmum ?
If so, how about going back to members only for a while, and see how it goes?

Highhill i too have always had that theory. I would never dare say something on any site, or, behind someone's back that i would never say to their face. But i think not everyone wants to be a member of a forum, i have several friends who do not join as members simply because they do not want to.

Well if you look at the bottom of the home page we currently have 7020 members. And the most users on line figure seems to be creeping up all the time.
But if you look at any time, there are usually a lot more guests on line than there are members, it's just that they don't necessarily want to post, sometimes they just want to view.
We did have an influx of new members when we made the lounge area members only. Also when someone joins now they have to have their account approved which is a relatively new thing, so if for any reason alarm bells ring, we can run a check to see if the IP matches any existing members or previous guests that have caused problems. We still allow members to have more than one login, because there can be genuine reasons for this, but it would make us want to keep an eye on things.

i have to agree members only. what is the point in saying something if you are not prepared to take responsibility for it. If you havent the spine to take responsibilty for it then dont bother!!! in my opinion anyway. x

Dear Mods, Members only. And do not be pressurised by the committee members of any of the showing societies to moderate content that is innocuous but shows the societies in a poor light. Its important that this site can still show valid comment from people who may be too scared to make an official complaint. Admittedly, it's a fine line to tread between the valid complaint and the guest poisonous whingers.

I think you should only be allowed to post comment's if your a member, Otherwise what's the point in becoming a member? When you can just post as guest's and not be fully recognised.

I don't post on here very much - I just like to come on and read whats happening elsewhere, but I thought I would comment on this thread. Would it be possible to just ban guests from posting but allow them to view things? That way the mods can log the IP addresses more easily but you still don't have to join to read everything. Not sure if its possible or not? I only registered as a member because I couldnt get onto the more interesting parts of the site unless I did!! (And I'm on here far too much considering I'm meant to be working!!! ;D )

It might be good if to say something you had to become a member- some computers don't allow it and some people who don't have an active email address can't become members.
However some of the strangest rumours come from guests many of which turn out to be true.

If i'm working out of another station, i have to log on as a guest. If at my station then can log on properly. Would be a shame if i cant have my hg 'fix' when on a night shift!!!!

I feel that forums should be for anyone to view, but members only to post. The majority of 'guest' posts on here that I have seen seem to be inflammatory, and i think if you can't (or wont) put your name to critisicm it is usually not constructive. Just my point of view...

Perhaps members are worried about getting banned for posting the truth! I wouldn't comment on any thread as a member - but being a guest doesn't make you traceable by other members....I know the mods can trace us guests - but thats not half as bad as the members!!!!

Trouble is, how do we know what's the truth and what isn't? We can only listen to all sides of the story and make a judgement call.

Hmm, and in some circumstances it does, but every case is different I'm afraid! Unless one of us has first hand knowledge of the situation.

Also, we very seldom go as far as to ban someone. But if we do, you don't have to be a member to get banned!!!! We ban IP addresses, which can belong to guests OR members.

Having just read through the thread moments before it was removed on the North of England show on Saturday I think it sums up totally why we should only allow guests onto this site on a read only basis what was written there made me ashamed to even be reading it - what are people coming to.
