I think it would be a great pity if the few badly behaved guests spoilt things for the vast majority who are constructive, helpful and sensible. Maybe we should be a bit more strict about blocking IP's of guests who seem hell bent on causing trouble?

I dont know what the answer is and totally agree the majority of guests give great input and a lot of the results direct from shows come from guests, Maybe it is time for mods to be stricter but that would be quite sad wouldnt it ?? We are all grown ups and should be able to show respect towards others feelings

Should it really be down to the mods though I understand they are totally needed but surely people know when to draw the line and not be soo out of order they warrant a warning let alone a ban ?

Also, some people will do their darndest to get round a ban, using different computers or mobiles so that their IP will be different. I'm not sure what we're expected to do about that.

I find them amusing, havent for a long time posted under anything other than my name, as feel i can say what i want or need to say as who i am, i get told i am niave and a walk over, but i may seem like that, but when it matters im not, im just a person who puts other people first and honesty at the top of my list of rules of life, im far from perfect and can loose my rag as much as the next person, but feel if you cant post as who you really are, they dont post, a bit like if you cant say anything nice sometimes better to keep stum !!!
I look at alot of pics asking what do you think of ....
I answer when i can and state what i see, but if i cant say anything constructive i keep it zipped, or do it privatley
I find it hard to take critisism, but i do and i listen weather it to do with my pony, or shows and try and improve and enjoy feedback from the nice people.
Thats what it boils down to, wh cant people just be nice, we all have a wicked streak but some more than others, worst i get is playing a little joke on people or having a laugh, some people i think think i must say things or do things, but can tell you know, im a, i will say it to your face if i have too not behind your back,
Now im rambling, had to many coat gloss fumes today lol
Nite nite x

I think we all know there is only 1 guest that comes on here to purposely cause trouble. As she is so predictable it seems to be easy to tell that it is her that is signing on a guest, would it be possible for the mods ( they are obviously as eagle eyed as the rest of us and know that its her!! ) to block her as soon as she puts on a post? Maybe then she will get the message and realise that no one on HG is interested in her childish opinions

Its sad that the mods have to be on guard because of one person, i agree that the way the posts are replied is sooooo much like what she posted before and have very much her character traits, she sint even trying to hide the fact it is her

I m sorry but its not just one "guest" Having been the victim of vitriolic attacks by "guests " on here I do think that unless you sign in you should not be allowed to post. A classic is on the Royal show thread. The mods cannot monitor 24 hours a day but nasty attacks can and do take place. And are not stamped on quick enough. Jealousy is an evil thing and it appears on here far too often.

I don't want this to turn into a discussion about one guest in particular, that situation is being dealt with. Let's keep it general, as to whether we think guests in general should be able to use the forum, that way no one can take it personally, I don't think the thread was started with that intention.

I feel I have to reply to HP's comment about 'not stamped on quick enough'. I think we both know that things can happen on forums when mods have other commitments - in the particular instance you mention I explained on the thread that I did have a prior commitment and wasn't able to be on line at the time.
I do think it would be a shame to block all guests, but then as we are a free to join forum I suppose there's no reason for people not to register? The problem that also happens when you block guests, is that people have multiple identities, so they can use a different login if they want to say something controversial. This can be monitored, but it's all extra work for moderators who have other commitments particularly at this time of year.

What a fun night that was MM 2.45am in the morning we finally got rid of the fools, at least it is a bit easier, as they can only post on certain areas of the site so we are not chasing them all over the place, but then I do think that when you have close to 8000 members and there are only 7 mods I don't think we do a bad job, it's alright for these smaller sites they can probably cope with just a few hundred members. As regards guests only. I joined one of the newer sites as a member made one post and promptly got my user name deleted, so there is something to be said for having the guests.
Modified to say, at times it would be nice to have a button that could shut the site for a night so we can get a early one.

Emma-Jane,what has happened to all your show stories of your little pony and your son (one called Charlie but can't remember if that is pony's or son's name!)? I used to really enjoy them last year.

As someone who used to buy message board and moderator services for a very large broadcaster I don't think the vindictive Guests realise that HG has a legal responsibility regarding defamatory content of any kind. Despite what people seem to think when you operate chat rooms and message boards such as these they must be moderated to to ensure the content is as per the code of conduct and standard Ofcom charters that the big guys like the BBC etc. have from the UK Government. By posting defamatory comments these guests are potentially ruining things for the vast majority. Plus bearing in mind this is a free site the increasing effort it takes to moderate will end up costing us all money. Take a minute to think before you post all you devilish types. You'll just end up spoiling this for everyone, yourselves included. And for what? I vote for registration and close down from say 2am til 6am? I'd like this site to stay free of charge.

Hollycane I think registration ( after all it dosen't cost anything to register ) is a good idea and so is close down as why should the poor mods who do this free of charge have to spend the early hours moderating the site!!!!!

I dont see why, being a members only sight, would adversly affect anyone wishing to use the sight in an appropriate manner. Afterall, anyone can join up and its free.
Therefore YES members only.

Mods-i also run a proboards site/forum and you can shut the forum down over night. Put it into maintenance mode for the appropriate hours you want. I think any mod or global mod can access this and not just admin.
Just a thought and will make your life easier.
I too struggle with trouble makers on my own site and the problem with banning ip addresses is the number of people with generic ip's according to their providers-some can span several counties and by banning one you can ban several innocent members at the same time.

Glad i am a member of the more GROWN UP version, Horse Gossip Please explain how this is "grown up" when people dont have the guts to post under their own names and can post libellous comments as a guest? Surely if they were "grown ups" they would have the courage of their convictions to post under their own name! Sorry whilst I think the site does have a place on the internet I am surprised that legal action has not taken place so far. I am in no way slagging the mods. They do an amazing difficult job. BUT it should be members only. It is the "guests "I have an issue with!

I just think there are enough equine forums out there for everyone to be able to find something that suits them. We have never wanted to be one of those sites that deletes things and bans people at the drop of a hat - one of the reasons this site was started at all was so that people would have a place to air their frustrations without fear of reprisal, as some of the societies can be perceived as somewhat of a closed shop. I'm not saying that's the case, just that some people feel unable to take things up with their societies for various reasons.
Personally, I enjoy a lively debate, but then I'm able to accept that not everyone's view will be the same as mine.
What I'm trying to say I suppose, is we are what we are, and we might not be to everyone's taste, but there's plenty of alternatives out there. That said, we do have rules, which are posted clearly for everyone to read, and we ask that members AND guests stay within them.

I think it would be intersting to hear from guests as to why they only post as a guest and dont register. Registration is free and very straight forward. If people genuinely dont want to cause trouble - why not just register and say who you are?

what is the difference between posting as a guest and posting using a screen name? people dont know who most of the members on here and lets face it, does it really matter if we know who everyone is? i dont want to know who people are if i am honest its a forum not a social club isn't it?
