I really hope you find him. I did read on another forum that at fayre oaks someones purchase got put back in the wrong pen after going through the ring. Could this of happened to your boy?? Im thinking of perhaps a transporters taking ponies up the road for other people?? I think you should get a list of who was bidding for your boy and have them questioned. The police can be soooo useless when dealing with horses. Have you contacted horsewatch? they may be able to offer advice? Also echo everyone else when i say scream PRESS!!!! at brightwells.

It is terrible that Brightwells are lapse with their security. They owe a duty of care, especially as all lots should be checked before going through the gates.

I thought all new foals had to be microchipped now when applying for their passports? What a great shame. Cant believe someone would do such a thing.... And that they were able to get away with it. Really, really hope you find him.

im so sorry to hear about your foal you bmust be so distressed i hope they track him down soon . someone tried to steal our coloured mare and foal last year at the cob sales luckily i had chained them in a stallion box but it didnt stop 3 big blokes trying to get the chain off .
i cuaght them red handed and told them they would have to get up a lot earlier to pinch one of mine . we always take locks for stables at any sales better to be safe than sorry .

At Haye on wye this year we noticed all the gates were open all night, we walked through to check ours and didn't see anyone there, in the morning when we loaded up, we weren't stopped once Scarey how easy it would be for someone to go off with one of yours.

When you buy a pony at FO or the Cob sales the staff will only release it from the pens upon the buyer handing over the reciept & pass out, then they will let them go. If you are stabling the pony overnight on the showground then I guess they will say that part is out of their control and is the buyers responsibility. It would probably be easier to steal a pony from the stables at the Royal Welsh as the security man (there 24 hours) doesnt challenge you taking anything from the stables to the lorry park as long as you have your ex. badge! I dont know of any other auctions that would check them out of the stables as well. Yes security can be stepped up but how many security guards can identify a pony? There are lots of ponys too-ing and fro-ing from the sales that aren't even entered - people will often use it as an opportunity to drop off a pony to a buyer or producer. It does make you wonder whether padlocks are the only way to be safe, lots of people use them.
I know its a daft thing to say but no one has moved him as a prank? and put him elsewhere on the showground - has every place been checked? I know a foal at Hay on wye was found in someones garden after a drunk person took him for a walk. Is there someone who was unhappy with his sale or you being purchaser? - or jealous that he might beat them in future so wanted him out of the way??
At the end of the day its the despicable scum who moved / stole him who are to blame and its a sad state of affairs that people would do this at a busy public sale.

the gates are chained at at night so i would have no idea how they would remove it at night, and as for the microchipping if they are registered before 1st july then no microchip is needed.

of course brightwells are responsible for this. it was their security men that allowed this to happen. they will try to get out of it and i know this is of no help to the distraught owners but they have to stand up and take the blame for what SHOULD be a secure unit.

So sorry to hear about your colt. Would agree with those who are saying publicity is they key here. If you can get H & H to print a picture so much the better, contact all the stolen horse sites etc, make up notices and perhaps post on H & H yourself asking for people to print them off and display intheir local tack shops. A cob was stolen locally to me in September, his owners did all the above, got local papers involved the lot. He was recovered just over a month later dumped in a field at the other side of the county, police think he had just got to hot to handle. Really hope you get your lad back.

Bailey wasnt the only horse to go through the gates unchecked either! a vendor didnt sell, loaded pony onto their trailer then realised they didnt collect paperwork or passport from Brightwells Office. Shocking and they claimed that every horse is checked going through the gates?? yea right!!

Have you alerted WPCs? I cant believe anyone would do that - its dreadful. Have you checked with the transport companies in case anyone sends him anywhere with one of them? Good luck and keep us posted.

I took 2 mares down to meet up with a transporter. Hell would freeze over before a reputable transport company would take an unpassported horse.

we kept our 3 foals together in the overnight stabling at fayre oaks and noticed a lot of the stables were padlocked. At the time my main concern was if a fire broke out, it would be nearly impossible to release these animals quickly, and a combinantion of people smoking, hay straw (not to mention rubbish left ) looked more worrying than security. However, on the sunday morning we loaded up the foals and went on our merry way without being checked/stopped once, so i can see how easy it would have been, the answer seems to be brightwells owes everyone proper security for their ponies. I do hope you have some news of your foal, i am so sorry for you and hope you get some good news.
