Well, from my own experience, the milk that drips/runs before birth is quite different from the first milk produced immediately after foaling. I say this, as I have always drawn a cup of milk from the mare (this milk is really thick and very sticky) and fed it to the foal before they get up.....they quite happily slurp it up. I find doing this has two advantages 1) it relieves the tension on the mares bag and makes the teats easier for the foal to grasp 2) That first feed really motivates the foal and having tasted and smelled the milk...they very quickly locate the milk bar once standing Certainly in the case of twins, it is best to have a vet run tests to ensure they have received sufficient colostrum....A foal needs at least 16 ozs colostrum in the first two hours of birth and if foal is suckling well, it is very likely it will have ingested a sufficient amount (up to 30oz in first eight/12 hours) of IgG colostrum to protect them from infection until their own immune system is able to build antbodies. Large studs probably obtain an Equine Colostrometer or Clinical Refractometer to measure the specific gravity of the colostrum in the Mares milk. Far too technical for me!! Well after all that ..........really looking forward to the big event as excited as when my mare foaled her twins Babs www.SunrayAngloArabianStud.co.uk

I am sure that Another deal has a very good vet on standby. I have ever milked my mares out when they have foaled as I like to interfere as little as possible, and let nature take it cours.
Hopefully when the time comes that it will all happen so quickly and it will all slot into place.
Thank goodness she has held on to them until now and given them a better chance in life.
Valentine must know something that we don't !!!

This thread has been read over 13000 times! That Miss Valentine is really courting publicity now, has she got Max Clifford on side? Seriously though I really hope for your sake she pops them out immediately if not sooner.

I hardly ever come on here and post, just tend to read, but it has become compulsive reading every night now, and I cant wait to read about the twins entry into the world ;D dont know how your holding up, your mare sounds a very clever girlie to be baking them as long as she is

I have news she went straight down in the stable when I brought her in and gave birth to a beautiful filly then gave birth to a very small colt who unfortunately didn't survive he did try to breathe but it just wasn't meant to be so LP she waited until 9.10 when we had let our balloon off and promptly popped out miss tabitha valentine. Please nobody be sad we have a very healthy baby and the other one didn't suffer vet thinks that ones lungs just weren't developed enough.
Anyway I'm off to bed speak to you all in the morning xxxxx
