Haha yeah come on raceboy post us your judging diary with show dates and which classes you will be judging its about time we had some honest judges that take into account the work put into our ponies getting them ready especially coloureds for bathing! I was at a riding club show the other week we had watched a few of the classes and thought the judging was parculiar we were watching the M+M large breeds there were about 10 in the class the 1 that won went ok but not the nicest animal in the ring 2nd & 3rd both got ran off with on the go round and the 1 in 4th went well the judge expained to the ones in 2nd and 3rd that the girl in 2nd hid the fact that she had been ran off with a bit better than the one in 3rd he went on to the D in 4th and said (and this is no lie) "its too well schooled for a welsh cob"!! the judge is a well known and respected judge(and is on hoys judging panel!) everyone found his comments highly ammusing and no-one complained it was laughed off pretty well it was a case of good sportmanship by all competitors!!

raceboy, we came under you at moorgreen, in the hunters. you rode our novice sympathetically also have to praise the confirmation judge maria holmes, think you worked well together (which is very rare these days with two judges) both of you have got my vote and will certainly be entering when see either of your names on a schedule.

Stunning animal you have put up on fashion week. Being a thoroughbred lover myself having had P-T-P all of my life until 7 yrs ago l know what you mean about the "pull effect" that these beautiful animals have. Does sound like you could be a very busy judge over the next couple of seasons.

I am always amazed at comments given by judges. At a recent show our novice youngster spooked in the go round and then went on and did a foot perfect individual. The judge quote...said "fabulous pony shame he spooked but I dont mind dumping you(bottom 2) as he will go on to win and win!!" What sort of comment is that??We then put him in the open in a snaffle bridle to have another look round and gain experience. He was pulled in 2nd then dropped because again the same judge quote" fabulous pony but he grunted going into canter". May I add that she seemed to enjoy musical rides by pulling in high then dropping, the one pulled in last was pulled up to 1st. I couldnt say what this juge liked or disliked, what she expected or didnt notice. I am a good sport and enjoy what I do but find it difficult when judges come out with comments that are neither constructive or balanced or make any sense....sometimes its best to give the rosette and just say thankyou.

Hi Raceboy, have to agree your chestnut is stunning but personally prefer Fashion Week. Now if l was looking for something for the track and knew nothing about your boy then l would be straight for the chestnut, but Fashion Week just gets me on the colour lol, and l think Fashion Week is going to make one hell of a showhorse !!!
When l was into the P-T-P l use to have, what l considered nicely breed horses usually bought Strong Gale, Exhibitioner, Satco, Ardross. Must say Ardross was always my very favourite !!!

We all bash the judges because we are sad, we have to complain (I don't like rude judges either) but when judging at a lower level I removed a rude child!!!! We all compete for FUN but like to think that we are being looked at. If we all won our classes we can't tell everyone or we'd be accused of boasting! Of course we are complainers, it's our nature!!! Happy Showing.xxx

It most certainly is disgusting, when we have put all our effort and money into being judged!! I don't bother saluting if the judge hasn't watched me.

You can tell if the judge hasn't watched my daughter, she looks at me, smiles and the does an exagerated shrug of her shoulders. The spectators see it and laugh then the judge wonders what they missed!!

I have experienced the opposite when judged by people that know me be it dressage or showing, I find they mark harder to justify my placing!! - meaning I have to work twice as hard!!

i can remember about 6-7 years ago at the summer festival of champions i was doing lead rein with my chestnut section A, around 40 ponies were in my class and after everyone walking the arena, she split the class at random half and sent one half out, we were sent out and was expecting to be called back into the ring to do our show but that didnt happen so we payed £12 to walk round an arena without doing a trot!

i have to write and stress my disappointment at the family pony classes judging at the fakenham show on sun may 25 , for starters it was the family pony ring which included a lot of young children, the classes were large classes and everyone had spent a lot of time , effort and money preparing for and supporting this show for charity, i was watching from outside the ring and for starters dont think i saw one of the judges smile in the three hours that i watched, i know everyone has there own opinion and preference but feel everyone should be given the same treatment in the show ring, some ponies and young riders didnt even get a second glance !! the majority that did win the classes were called in on a first name basis !!! though others were called in by number or just pointed at !! I AM BEGINNING TO WONDER IF ITS NOT WHAT YOU KNOW BUT WHO YOU KNOW ?

Hello Anotherdeal1 Shame you came across someone who has upset you so soon in the show ring.
I am all for the tiny kiddies having fun and not being placed under undue pressure. If your daughter is having fun on this delightful school master, she is safe and her riding is coming on as well as the judge considered, don't feel the need to jump from this wee sweetheart to a fancier, more expensive model, who would undoubtedly bring a whole lot more expectations and pressures, to both you and your daughter. Enjoy this pony and I am sure when your daughter is old enough to judge for herself, she may well look back on this as her best ever pony as she had the most fun and learned the most. Well, I would like to think so. I like a happy endings.
The very best of luck, keep it all about fun and enjoy your days out, the memories will last you both a life time.

i agree how terrible that a judge can say that about someones pony. I know that not all ponies are going to win HOYS but many have a very valuble job to teach their little jockeys well. I think your pony is very nice and your daughter looks very happy to be on board - often something else lacking! I belive children should be brought up to care about their animals not that they are a machine to win with, and an inferior one can be discarded for a 'better model' at any time.

???the attitude of this sort of judge is what turns nice kids, who are out enjoying there showing into brats who think they are better than anyone else as mummy and daddy buys them the best pony out there, pony and child look super together and most of all are enjoying them selves , good on you and carry on as you are

When asking a Judge for an opion you have to remember its only that Judges opion on that day. If you are not prepared for what the reply from Judges may be then do not ask.

Its fine to give an opinion, but to lambast the pony is'nt on. If I'd have said what I really thought of some of the ponies, horses and riders I judged lately, I would have deserved a lynching. In a class of open workers, not one horse could jump, they hurled themselves over the fences scattering poles everywhere, they were unbelievably badly schooled and their riders were utterly useless. I diplomatically told them how the class was judged as not one of them had a clue, what I was looking for in a working hunter (emphasis on that) and ways to help improve their animals jumping ability and way of going. They had just qualified for a championship show, and to be honest were completely wasting their time going the way they performed in front of me. Even though they were adults, they paid their money, got their prizes and although I could quite easily have ripped them and their horses apart, it would have achieved nothing. As it was I had given up the will to live watching that class alone, and although I know my comments fell on deaf ears, it just made me feel better that I was able to say what I had to say in a positive manner. There is never an excuse for being downright rude, whatever you may think.

I once showed under a judge who said that my horse had lovely straight, balanced paces and asked if we did dressage. I told her that we had done a little bit and her reply was .... "Yes, I think you'd be better off spending your money on that rather than wasting it on this game" Didn't have the heart to tell her that there was a WH judge who had placed us champion earlier in the day that would probably disagree with her
