Very sad new. After speaking to him at Equifest, I trudged along to the furthest ring, just so I could see him in action, judging a large class of Connies. A very worthwhile experience, as always. Having had the chance to probation with him, I also know first hand that he will be a huge loss to the equine world. RIP Michael.

R.I.P. Michael, Michael stopped with us when he was in the North West and was a pleasure to have a round. A true gentleman with a great sence of humour. You will be sadly missed Michael and will be remembered with great fondness. Move over all you showing icons that have passed on, Michael is now with you. Sue, Paul, Pat & Ste.

we will miss him so much.shocked and sad to hear we have lost him. x That's really lovely, but, do you know what? We will never lose Michael. He is too much a special person to be 'lost'. One of the really good things which happened to him recently (last year's BSPS AGM, as Chloe's Mum mentioned earlier) was that Michael was awarded the BSPS Lifetime Award. How nice that he was alive to recieve it, if you understand what I mean. All the lovely things which we say about people once they have died - and for once, Michael was able to see for himself at that AGM, just what he meant to us. Not really previously mentioned is Michael's great love and knowledge of the Connemara Pony. In that regard, our thoughts must go out to 92 year old Valentine Richardson of the Hungary Hall Connemara Stud. Between them, they made a life-time contribution to the Breed in this country.

Michael was an inspiration to many people and was a very caring and sensitive person. He was a good friend to many people over many years. Your sense of humour and risque comments will be sorely missed Mr. Sleep well friend. xx

This is a very sad day for the world of horses and ponies, I was with Michael last week at the Champs and as always he was a gentleman. I have spent many happy hours stewarding for Michael and I will miss him greatly.

My husband and I are in shock! What a lovely gentle man to co judge with and also know as a friend. The last time we saw Michael was at BSPS area 7 where we spent a lovely morning chatting whilst waiting to judge our classes, he was as usual on good form.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael and his friends, family and colleagues at this very sad time. RIP Michael.

What sad news. Michael and Valentine bred my first Connie 'Hungry Hall Prince Charming' who was simply stunning. He inspired my love for the breed, which has never left me. I was fortunate enough to be judged by Michael at a Connemara show, he was so kind and took time to chat about my past boy and how he was bred. I don't know that I've come across anyone so considerate in the ring, truly the end of an era....how terribly sad for Valentine. RIP Michael, it was a privilege to have met you.

Very sad loss of a legend in the showring. A true gentleman, so kind and he had a lovely way with children, watching him judge lead rein was always a delight. He was someone who has always been round, judged me as a child & I coursebuilt for BSPS many times when he was chairman area 15, or judging.

I heard the news this morning at Moreton Show - it really put a damper on the day. Michael was such a lovely man and such a respected judge - I doubt there is a person in the showing world who hasn't known him or been judged by him at one time or another. I will never forget bumping into him at Corley Services the year before last on the way to HOYS and he followed me to the NEC in case he got lost! We spent the whole morning sitting together watching the mountain and moorlands and judging them from the sidelines! One thing I will always remember Michael for is his laugh - once heard never forgotten!! RIP Michael - the showing world is a sadder place without you.

What terribly sad news. When we were showing under saddle we were always delighted to see his name as judge as we knew we would be judged fairly by a man of immense knowledge and integrity, who's opinion you never doubted. He truely was a gentleman and scholar, shame there aren't more of his ilk about. RIP Michael Sharpley.

Having been out of the loop today, and received a message on my facebook account, I now have the unenviable task of going to tell my mother that Michael has died, we both thought the world of him. She would steward for him at any opportunity and respected him beyond belief. He was witty, cheeky and all-round good fun, a font of knowledge and as has been said, a total gentleman and a proper old school judge, how rare they are these days. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. RIP MIchael, may you truly rest in peace. Amanda and Victoria.
