It is not the venue that is a problem , Northleach is a brilliant venue. Having competed at both Northleach and Shrewsbury, Northleach is 100 times better. The problem is the judging , the turn out in the ridden D's was terrible, and why? because everyone knew who was going to get the ticket!!! (for the second year running) What makes me laugh is that once john james got his ticket he didnt even stay for the supreme championship, it was like Ive got my ticket now im off!!! How many olympia qualifiers did he do with that cob anyway? 1? Changing the venue will not solve the problem, judges just need to stop doing favours and judge what they see on the day! exactly!

The Section D mare that qualified at Northleach (Sydenham Ixia) did also win her class at the Royal Welsh this year, and do well at other shows. She was obviously nervous and tense at Olympia, but then she is only a 5 yr old and Forget me not used to be the same but was obviously a lot better this year.
As for the Section C (Wyken Limelight) she has also been very succesful both this year and previous years having been highly placed (in top 3) at Royal Welsh, as well as qualifying for Olympia & HOYS in previous years. She is unfortunately another one who does not seem to cope well with the atmosphere of such a big event sadly. Such a shame, as she can go fantastic on the right day.

Welsh cob rider Do you not find it strange that both JJ's rides won at the royal welsh - the junior and the senior ridden sec D classes. Please can someone tell me what the chances of JJ having the best of say 35 in each class - so are you seriously telling me that out of 70 or so cob mares JJ just happens to be riding the 2 best ones there

Wherever the qualifier is held it will be the same crowd running and stewarding it. The lady who runs Northleach is fantastic and very fair and it may be others letting her down.
The going at Northleach can't be faulted and it's held during a week when there are few other shows fitting perfectly into the Olympia qualifier timetable.
Surely the WPCS cannot decide where a qualifier is to be held as it is a NPS competition.
If the NPS use their welfare hat then Northleach should hold the qualifier as it is a beautiful showground with shade, perfect going and good cover wheras Shrewsbury cannot compare.
Support Laura Hutchins and her team as they made a wise move to Cirencester and our ponies thank them for that. Use the RIHS Stewards for the Olympia classes. They are presently wasted in the In hand Rings.

It is not the WPCsSthat have decided that Northleach cannot hold the breed qualifier. It was a desicion that was taken by the NPS. There have been so many mistakes, errors and rule twisting in the last few years, that finally the NPS have listened to the endless complaints and taken the qualifier away from Northleach. If you look on the WPCS website and follow the link to the latest council minutes it explains all. Think yourselves lucky it not being held at Lampeter, thats even worse!!

Why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist about JJ winning both junior and senior classes at the RWS with mares from the same stud. This has happened before,in 1999,Wathwood Rhiannon and her daughter W. Rosina. They then went on to be champion and reserve.Has anyone thought that the judge was going for a particular type. I like Sydenham cobs.A friend has several of them on her stud. And they they all scream Sydenham at me.If I could afford one Id own a Sydenham cob.But would likley need a stepladder to get on it. ;D

I couldn't agree more re Laura, she is one of the few fair judges left & I totally support her, However I think you have hit the nail on the head re the Stewarding, our gripe from the Sec A Olympia class this last year!! If proper stewards are available why on earth arn't they being used ?? More proof of not been seen as whiter than white by certain individuals. Incidentally apart from an acknowledgment from NPS initially to my letter I have heard nothing since!!! WP&CS also responded but absolutely nothing from Northleach! I copied in both Northleach & WP&CS out of courtesy, unfortunately Nothleach didn't respond in kind! Tanina

Let me explain to you all what happened about stewarding the ridden section A's this year at Northleach. I had been asked to do it. I am a competitor with over forty years experience and an experienced steward. I do not know the judge at all. I drove a round trip of well over 100 miles. I stood around in the cold wind waiting for hours with just a cup of coffee. At lunch time I went to introduce myself to the judge. She said that she did not need me as she was using her friend and I could go home. I complained to Laura Hutchins -she just said the judges decision was final. I went home before the class. I did not have anything to do with the fact that the replacement steward has ponies produced by the winning producer. I did not even know who was going to steward in my place. I am heartily sick of the innuendo and rumours about this. I was looking forward to standing next to a judge who I have never met before and never shown under and watching her judge. I do not waste £40 of deisel and a whole day just so that I can collude with people I would normally have nothing to do with. I will never, ever agree to steward again, anywhere. Anyone else making any kind of accusations about any involvement they wrongly believe I may have had in the result of this class will hear from my solicitor.

Featherston
We are singing off the same hym sheet!!!
What happened to you, in my opinion, is party to what is going wrong with showing today, hence us changing direction.
No way, at any time was I aware, until now, of your predicament, & no way where any innuendos made towards you, rather the REPLACEMENT steward!!! & her strong conection with the winning producer.
Its amazing, the more you find out, the more you get to see different parts of the puzzle & more of what really goes on becomes clear!
Rest assured I suspect that ALL the innuendos made here, & elsewhere, are about the REPLACEMENT steward, NOT you!
Incidently did you let NPS know?

That the Society support the concept put forward by Ms. Telford and that this be advertised on the Society’s website, in the Newsletter, etc. when a system was finalised.
(x) NPS Qualifiers
A letter had been received regarding the NPS Qualifiers for Olympia offered at Northleach Show. The National Pony Society had withdrawn the Qualifiers from Northleach and required an alternative show.
Miss L. Hutchins, Miss R. Philipson-Stow (Committee members) and Mr. P. Wilding-Davies (past Chairman of Northleach) declared an interest.
Considerable discussion ensued with members of the opinion that no decision should be made until a full explanation was given as to why the Qualifiers were being withdrawn.
A proposal was put forward by Mrs. Edwards, and seconded, that if it was not possible for Northleach Show to retain the Olympia qualifiers the NPS should be recommended to offer these at Lampeter Stallion Show.
Mr. E. Prosser put forward an amendment to the proposal that if it was not possible for the Qualifiers to be retained at Northleach the NPS should be recommended to offer these at The National Welsh Championship Show in Shrewsbury. The amendment was seconded by Mr. J. Parry.
The Chairman of Council indicated that those members with interests in Lampeter Stallion Show and/or The National Welsh Championship Show were ineligible to vote.
On being put to the vote with 9 votes in favour of the amendment and 8 votes in favour of the proposal with 1 abstention and a declaration of interest from Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Price
IT WAS RESOLVED
That if it was not possible to retain the Olympia Qualifiers at Northleach Show for 2007 that the NPS be recommended to offer these to the National Welsh Championship Show to be held in August at Shrewsbury.
[NOTE: Since the Meeting a letter had been received from the NPS stating that they were not willing to go into details as to how they came by their decision to withdraw the Qualifiers from Northleach Show.]
Taken form the WPCS.

Miss Rosemary Phillipson Stow took over the stewarding of the classes from the official steward. She (miss Phillipson Stow) of course has ponies produced by Mandy Nevin who also produced the winner of the ridden section A class.

As usual here is a prime example of pony people making a mountian out of a molehill. I agree the setting and going at Northleach are incomparable. All the NPS - bless 'em - needed to do was request a list of stewards and in this case - due to the problems occurring in the past - allocate them them. Also agreee that the Hickstead chief steward [also a trained NPS steward] would have been the ideal choice. What happened in 2006 is not new. There has been controversy with the judging of the Ridden A's for years and it needs sorting out however this will not happen by moving it to another show run by the same club. If those in the know are honest the situation could get far worse. A plea to the NPS. Think before you act. Go for simplicity and sense folks. Happy New Year and PLEASE can we save our ponies legs and return to NORTHLEACH.

Some of the elder judges who steward appear from the ringside to intimidate a good steward should keep their distance and only stand with the judge when asked to, and a good judge should always distance themselves from the steward, they are there to do a job, sometimes stewards dont know the correct way of running a ring. (hooray for stewards, but they need the correct guidance). it is down to the judge in the end, ask politely to be left along to concentrate, if this does not work tell them to buzz off (only joking) but hope you get my drift.......

I believe that some stewards do have tremendous influence over judges, especially the one who are well known judges themselves. How about the suggestion that anyone who judges should not steward? When stewarding myself, I have been asked by judges what I think and asked if I know who certain people are. One judge kept falling asleep and I had to wake her up each time a pony came out to do its show. Any show holding qualifiers for olympia or HOYS should have a capable judge and a trained steward - end of story. I stand away from the judge when they are watching the class or individual shows to avoid being asked questions but within earshot so that they can tell me to ask the class to walk or whatever. I hate to see the judge and the steward in a cosy huddle!

So right! PUK & NPS have evidently run Stewards Training and those attending were told they would receive recognition of this but has this happened? No! New Year thought. Maybe Olympia qualifiers should be stewarded by trained stewards only?

Don't blame PUK this is entirely down to the NPS as they were meant to provide certificates of competence for those who attended. As for Northleach the u turn is down to one person.

Are you saying that The Welsh Olympia qualifiers are staying at Northleach And/Or that RPS can stay Stwearding the class???
If NPS allow the latter then they are being very shortsighted

Having just spoken to the NPS, I know that they know what happened at Northleach. They are having a council meeting on 4th Jan where this will be discussed. If anyone had anything to say then they should email them now - and (try to) put a stop to this kind of thing happening again in the future.

The NPS will need to ensure that stewards are not involved in Ridden classes themselves in any way [breeding, competing or judging]or we may get more of the same
