Today at a show we were marked down for our 5 year old section d mare being obese. The thing is, she is far from it. I have owned her since 6 months old, and have had the attitude that she will mature in her own time & I will not over feed her like many do with there youngsters. Since been broken to ride last summer, we have been trying to get weight on her & top line. She is only just coming together now. Its just really annoying when you know that your horse is a tad underweight, and then they are marked down for been overweight & far too cresty. Here she is 2 weeks ago at a show where she won her class and was reserve champion. She was no larger than this at the show today. And photo taken today, not the best.

Thanks, Yeah I think we just need to work on the topline, top of her bum looks abit too flat/slopey (don't know how to describe it lol), but this will come with more work & time. She has just been going upwards and not so outwards, hopefully finished growing at 15.1hh. x

Sorry but I would agree with the judge. She is fat. From ear to tail, can you tell us where and why?

I'm sorry but this judges need to go to more shows to see the definition of obese welshies as your horse is far from fat & especially compared to others!! I would also like to know why somebody above agrees with the judge?? Lovely condition if you ask me! x

She is not obese, but is carrying some fat. Perhaps the judge did not like the creases across the crest. This is often the first place to fatten and the last place they lose. I have a native mare and the moment I see those creases, I know I must be really really strict.
Ridden these creases mean the neck becomes fixed and inflexible and it is impossible to have a supple ridden horse as a result. It is very difficult for the horse to really be soft to the bridle.
This is meant to be constructive and perhaps an explanation as to how the judge viewed her from a ridden viewpoint.

for a welsh, no she is not fat! being a mare she may just be a bit deeper in the body, but you can see her shoulder nicely and there are no fat rolls from what the picture shows. she has a nice crest which is is proportion with her body, if anything she has a weaker back end, but that could possibly the the angle of the photo! very nice

I'd say show condition but not over fat - but I prefer to feel my own anyway rather then look at them. Most Ds shown in hand these days are far fatter then she is!
Sorry S & O but I can't see the creases across the crest you talk about.

oh dear - i dread to think what comments i will get about my section d on saturday if yours has been called fat. He only gets turned out in the starvation paddock (its that bare you could probably count every blade of grass!) he is not getting any hard feed and he gets haylage in a morning and at tea time (double netted) x

Thank you everyone for your comments. gtr121, you are entitled to your opinion, but why do you think that she is fat? sageandonion thank you for the constructive comments, I agree with you, but I cannot see creases, on the second photo they do appear to be some on the top of her neck, but she doesn't have these in person, it looks like her coat to me, she has only just lost most of her winter coat as I didn't have her clipped. Bows4shows, where are you showing on saturday? If its otley we may see you there x

First trip out with the new section a and first trip in the wagon. Have never shown small breeds before so should be fun. I'll be the one tripping up or getting dragged x

Sorry S & O but I can't see the creases across the crest you talk about. Perhaps the judge did. There is no point in everyone saying she is lovely (which she is) if you are asking a question. I hate people saying mine look fabulous when I know there is an area for improvement, which there always is. Was it a local show and do you have any pictures of the other entrants which the judge thought were better placed.

Totally agree. She is looking a million times better than she did a year ago, but shes still not there in my eyes.
Yes it was, practice run out with her new handler before Otley show this weekend.
No photos at the moment but will post them once they come online.

To be picky on a condition score of 1-5 (1 being under weight, 5 being obese) I would put her at at 3.5 so a bit over weight - would watch the crest but wouldnt say obese.

I personally think she is looking fantastic,if anything needs more muscle on her backend. I can't see the creases across the crest that you talk about S&O,it looks more like the pennies on her coat.

She looks fine to me. Definately not obese! She doesnt want to be carrying any more weight, but I would also say she doesnt want any less ( if that makes sense! ).
