From my understanding, the owners of the pony in question are indeed members of this forum. Otherwise the advert couldn't have been posted. Maybe this thread would give them an opportunity to explain why he is being ridden in the show ring at such a young age - that is if he's three years at all

And now the trolls are starting on Terry. Who was to say he knew anyway. Presumptuous or what. Anyways as its been said A LOT do it. Just most use a stable name as its an experience only day out. The dartmoor didn't look weak or poor to me. This is a child's pony. A young one. I think race horses are a better and more worthy cause to petition than a young girl and her pony.

bow1607 my comment was in response to the comment about a 3 yr old it is still growing, i agree it should not be competing in ridden showing classes at 3 yr old, look what happened to my friends horse, we don't believe in lunging them too young either. just wanted to clarify. I see you have edited your original post to say "of course it should not" but the original post said he should.... then you explained about your friends horse, it got me a bit confused lol!

Not starting on Terry at all. He's a very proffesional and respectable producer and I do presume he wouldn't have known because this could've damaged his reputation.

There is no point in people taking 'sides' and arguing about it, if there was a rule stating that no pony under 4 is to be ridden on the show ground, then surely they are breaking the rules of the show, simple as, the owners have been showing long enough to know to read the rules.

You see alot of highly schooled four year olds at HOYS...... I wonder how much practice of noisy indoor atmospheres these horses get? Croft top is hardly a grandstand of a go round. You need to look closer at the ages of some of the high end workers to be really appaulled.

Yes and in the rules it advises to put your complaint in writing. Not make assumptions.

Does anyone have a schedule to check the rules? If there is no age limit printed, although you would expect it to be minimum 4, like it or not no rules have been broken . If there was an age limit of 4 then all connections should have known better and have done themselves no favours! Maybe a show official would clarify and put this to rest one way or another.

I have no axe to grind as I'm not a showing person.
I just don't feel a 3 yr old pony is mentally or physically capable of being schooled to show standards & I'd be very worried about one that was apparently being placed higher than more mature ponies.
All some people seem to do is push, push, push for early results & then sell on. Allowing a youngster time to mature naturally seems to be just wasteful in their eyes. It's not just the schooling & the ringwork, travelling is so wearing to joints & limbs.
Don't non-breed shows check passports? Makes you wonder why you have to have them.

Well atleast anyone who is anti showing/riding young ponies, will know to avoid buying this particular pony, if it becomes available to buy who knows what problems it could have in the future, from being broken and schooled to that level, when was it broken then? As a 2 year old? My god, these animals live for years, why on earth would they do this? I would never, ever, buy a horse or pony, who has not been allowed a childhood, it is wrong, and most, we find, when they hit what would be the terrible teens in human years, maybe around 5 or 6 years for a pony, may begin to play up and rebel slightly, not wise, when it's a childs pony???

I know the pony and the family, and maybe not right to take a 3 year old should have waited the 8 weeks.. The pony in question has not been hammered or schooled immensely, he was unshown or touched till Jan this year where he was lightly broken and turned away .. Has done max 4 shows all his life .. Brought back into work recently by a 10 year old who rides him in a fun capacity once or twice a week in paddock and even hacks him to the shop.. He is very chilled and just adjusted to ridden superbly..
I know many a producer and home produced who get there 3 Year old ponies out nov and dec at Bsps winter shows and qualify for winter champs.. Some shows allow you to take your rising 4 year old out winter show in the nov and dec..
What does annoy me is that the pony concerned is well rested and has been allowed to be a youngster, and as for the travelling comment he has never travelled more than 1 hour to a show .. What about all the foals, yearling and youngsters who travel hours every weekend and hAve to cope with the huge welsh events .. Foal shows and riding pony shows county shows are these not hard done by Also

Yes "Don't Make Assumptions" they should have waited the 8 weeks... rules are rules...... no excuses.... or do they not apply to your "friends" and they are special enough to do what they want where and when they want . This case shows that rules are not rules to some... hence some heated discussions on here like this one and people asking for threads to be taken down. I for one am very interested to hear about people who feel they can ride ruff shod over every one else to gain a red rosette

Sorry, that doesn't wash with me. You said it yourself, in your last sentance above, "are these not hard done by ALSO". Rules or not, poor pony

This show is not affiliated to any Society or Association. On the North West Championship Show website there is no mention of age of pony in any class. I would suggest that no rule has been broken by anyone and that the show organisers should be contacted directly if people feel stongly enough about this. They may add age limits in the future. Think there has been too much made of this. Most 3 year olds are broken in the summer of their third year and many shown from Jan 1st. It is an M&M pony that is designed to live on a moor and stand up to severe weather conditions. This pony will surely stand up to a bit of ridden work in its third year without being ruined for life.

Utter rubbish! M&M's, as most of us surely know, take a long time to develop and stop growing, maturing?! 3 years old is no age, impatience it is called!

Perhaps the standard was poor for why else could a 3 year old do so well? It is not physically let alone mentally possible for a 3 year old to be schooled to a high level. They are not capable of carrying themselves. This could of course be yet another example of heads being pulled in (please don't tell me a wilkie ) and strong legs driving it forward - did someone say a man rode it? However, this does appear to be the standard more than acceptable for the show ring these days.

At the end of the day if the rules don't state they have to 4 then no-one has broken any rules, and although i wouldn't have done it myself its down to the owner and no-one else,we all make decisions about our horses/ponies that i'm sure not everyone would agree with at some time or another.

Been reading this thread with interest and at the end of the day if the pony was competed as a three year old then this is breaking rules, i really dont care who it belongs to, who rode it, who lives next door etc etc, and please note i have no connection to anyone involved and am posting under my username not hiding as a guest . The pony shouldnt of competed end of story so why are so many people coming on here making excuses for it being in the ring, i dont care if it was a day under age or 364 days it still shouldnt of been competing, and as adults i think we all understand rules are made for a reason in all walks of life and are there to be respected. If the owner, rider, producer of whoever are members on here and this isnt the case im sure someone would of come on here to set the record straight dont you ??

Now I am confused by this thread... rule broken... no rule broken.... However a young pony being ridden by an adult (hopefully a small adult as its bone wont have matured) in a show ring.... Avoid 12 is totally correct (IMO) M&M need longer to mentally settled and S&O is correct wilkie and leg on, no natural outline just hauled in and pulling from the front with little back action... damaging.. yep i would say so! But hey that's OK the pony won a rosette..... I personally have morals and the wellbeing of my animals for most in my mind and do not even lunge until they are 4 years old.
