Hate my name! It's Jemima so as you can imagine I get the lot! Puddle duck, Jams, Jammie, Jem, Jemzy, Gemini, Gemma, Jemi & when people mock & say "Je-MIM-ah" I don't have my name shortened at all (apart from my Mum who says Mima or Mimes which I don't mind tbh) but everyone trys Jem. It is quite annoying! As if my names not bad enough! Really detest my name! Agree I never do nicknames unless the person says, or are OK with it, as I know how annoying it can be!

No one in our house is called by their real name anyway - they all have at least one nickname by which they're commonly known ( and that goes for the dogs and horses too )! I'm Flee or Mumsicle , my hubby is Bobski , daughter (Kate ) is Lulu , son (Ben) is Spud , grand daughter is Elf/Ellamorella/Floribunda , grandson is Chewie , neice ( Laura ) is Lola ,nephew (Andrew) is Baroli , my sister Catherine is W , brother in law Foggy , sister in law is Sparrow ...... the list goes on and on !

At least people attempt to say your first names guys, mine just gets ignored because no-one thinks its a real name! They seem to think I don't know my own name, which REALLY grates My friend is called Mhairi which is prounounced Vari. Don't no why but it is. She's used to the how do you say it, can you spell it. When we go to dressage or shows and she gets called she usually gets shouted as Miss L**den thus avoiding having to say the word they don't know how to say ;D I like her name, I just don't understand why it's spelt the way it is and even worse her actual name is Elizabeth. Mhairi is her middle name which she uses as her 1st name

I'm not fussed really. My name's Georgina, I get a mixture of George, Georgie, Georgia, Georgina and Gina. Although, I never really liked it when teachers shortened it, I was always Georgina to them and it seemed strange when they called me something else, it didn't irritate me so to speak, but they did get ignored.
My parents called me Gina when I was little, moreso George now, older friends call me George, newer friends call me Georgie. Georgia tends to be a mistake when they first heard it and it tends to stick...
Now my surname, several variations on spelling and pronunciation.

Its pronounced like that because its Scots Gaelic and that is how you say the sounds in the Gaelic alphabet.
My point is, my name is my name and I quite like it. I HATE my middle name and of all the unusual names out there, it is probably the simplest. My issue is people simply just ignoring it full stop, because they don't see it as a name.
And even worse when they ask "am I sure" when I say or spell it. I once had a teacher who had pre-corrected my name on her register to Nina. She took the register and didn't say Nia. There WAS a girl called Nina in another class. Then she asked "did I miss anyone out" and I said yes. When I explained she actually tried to convince me I didn't know my own name. She asked "was I sure" when I spelt it to her and she took a lot of convincing to re-write Nia. I felt embarrassed and immensely annoyed. But I was a good student, so took it on the chin.....

Thanks Nia, but oh don't get me started on registers, every time we have a substitute/new teacher, the whole class seem to pause in anticipation, awaiting what weird and wonderful pronunciation they would come out. And then they get onto my surname..now ive heard some corker variations of that!! And flee, how on earth do you remember all those? We're very boring in our family, everyone is referred to by their birth names. I think i've heard one name shortened and that was my nans, 'her' side of the family, (sister and her kids etc) refer to her as Barb but think thats about it.

Its pronounced like that because its Scots Gaelic and that is how you say the sounds in the Gaelic alphabet. I am aware of that thank you, but it does get annoying having to explain it to people Everytime someone asks how do you spell Vari. I generally get as far as MH till I hear a WHAT, MH? Hmm yes.

I'm jade. Shorten that? Lol. I call my friend Jade JadeyBop  Try being an Alexa I get Alex, Alexandra, Alexander, Alexis, Alexia, Lexy, Lexie, Lex, Alec, Lexa, Ali, Ala, Aliesha, Electra ... the list goes on. My Mum calls me Lexa and my friends call me Lex or Lexy. I find it odd though, when my bf's family call me Lex. I always introduce myself as Alexa but because they knew me first through him talking about, he always referred to me as Lex. If I had a pound for every time soebody did the Lex Luther joke ...

I hate anyone calling me Kaz. My maiden name was Pinkney which I got alsorts of variations on in any form of letters, correspondence.................Pinkerton, Pinky, the most common one was 'Pinkeye' as thats what spell check changes Pinkney to. When HSBC india branch used to call they couldn't pronounce it at all, I used to finish their sentence for them. Our local skip hire firm insist on calling us Mr & Mrs 'Carrott' on any bills. Suppose its a bit like Garrett

I always say I will answer to anything :-)
My name (Heidi) got lengthened when Hi-de-Hi was on TV and everyone thought it was hilarious - have to admit I saw the funny side so never bothered me.
One ex-colleague calls me H and another calls me Dee - doesn't bother me as both are terms of affection.
I used to hate it when my in-laws used to call daughter Soph (think that is because I don't get on with in-laws) but it has grown on me now some of her friends call her it and she doesn't mind them calling her Soph.
We also use nicknames - hubby is Mr Grumpy and daughter is munchkin, honeybun, sweetie pie and lots of other variations.
I would always use someone's full name unless they say I can shorten it as I know it is important for some people but for me a name is just a name and it doesn't bother me if someone gets mine wrong or shortens/lenthens it - our neighbour still calls me Hayley despite living in our house for 12 years

I'm the opposite of OP. My name really is Kim and I used to hate being called Kimberley, especially when Victoria Wood did that sketch about her friend Kimberley! Doesn't really bother me now though, I answer to most things as long as it's not rude or insulting, then I'd throw a deafy ;D

My name is Linda and I point blank refuse to answer to any one who calls me Lyne. I even changed my window cleaner because he would still say "hello Lyne" no matter how many times I would say "it's Linda" drove me flippin crazy.

I'm Nici, which is a pretty unusual spelling. It does irritate me if people call me Nicki on forums, email or FB, when they can see my name spelled out in front of them My mum, OH and a few friends call me Nic, my ex-OH and my sister call me Nix. I don't mind either, but HATE Nicola - I am Nici! Nia, when I write my name, I have to be careful not to let the "ci" run into each other, or my name looks like Nia - I was called that quite a lot when I was younger. Growing up in Wales, Nia was more common than Nici. I called my daughter Cerys because I wanted her to have a Welsh name that was easy enough to deal with in England - some Welsh names are a real problem for non-Welsh people to pronounce. It didn't occur to me that there would be any issue with spelling / pronunciation of her name, but English people who don't know the name do have problems. If they see it written first, they think her name is pronounced something like "Cerise" (the colour), and if they hear her name first, they think it's spelt Kerris. I had hoped though that her name would be unusual as we live in England, however there were 3 girls called Cerys in her class in nursery! One went to the Catholic school in our village, mine and the other are in the same class in the village community primary school. So much for my plan to give her a unique name ;D Funnily enough I don't know any other Cerys's locally - there are no others in her school - just a little cluster of 8 year olds ;D

Nici - the only time I don't have a problem with my name is if I have to phone the DVLA, or my water company, both of which are based in Wales..... I know Nia is pretty common, especially in North Wales, but not over here. I want to give a future child of mine a Welsh name, but worry about the spelling/pronunciation, plus my hubby isn't overly keen, so I may get overruled! You'd think with the level of multi-culturalism in this country, with names from all corners of the globe, that people would maybe check pronunciation or spelling carefully, before making a hash of it!

I'm rubbish at pronouncing names, so if I don't think it's sounded as its spelt I normally ask!!! Everyone at work thinks I am mad but I'd rather that than get it completely wrong!!

You'd think with the level of multi-culturalism in this country, with names from all corners of the globe, that people would maybe check pronunciation or spelling carefully, before making a hash of it! A friend of mine is also Welsh and named Nia (I think it's a lovely name BTW). She gave all her children Welsh names (Dafyyd, Ffion and Tomos) and brought them up bilingually to boot! It hasn't caused them any real problems growing up, although people do find the spelling aspect harder than the pronunciation. Be proud of your heritage Nia . When I worked as I primary teacher I once had a little girl called Siobhan in my class. I was mortified when her parents pointed out at our first parents evening that I had spelled her name incorrectly on all her books! Misspelling names does annoy me, my surname is Newson, and I get a multitude of variations, despite spelling it phonetically for people and reciting my dad's wedding speech when he quipped that 'he wasn't losing a daughter but gaining a new son'. The pupils used to joke that I was Mrs Nuisance, and once a parent wrote my name like that on a dinner money envelope. I dread to think what her son had told his mum about me

Oh I am proud alright, it just a constant source of frustration! There's a guy at church, we've been going to that one since 2008 and he STILL mispronounces my name (says Nye-ah instead of Nia) and it grates on me every single Sunday. I've got bored of correcting him.....

The answer there is to mispronounce their name when you answer them - or call them something entirely different - so "Hello Nye-ah " "Hello Barry" "It's Garry" "It's Nia " People mispronounce my first name all the time and this works a treat .Plus it's highly amusing .
