My little is sister is Genevieve and we all call her Jelly Bean, and sometimes Smelly Bean - it has stuck for 7 years so far and worryingly I think she may be a Jelly Bean for the rest of her life... oops! Oh bless! I hope she doesn't mind but I suspect she may in a few years time ;D |

I know what you mean I'm Stephanie my family call me Steph and that is fine but cant stand people i don't know calling me that  It was worse when i was at school people called me Fanny  |

In the updated versions of the Enid Blyton books the name Fanny is now Franny and D*** is now known as Rick!!
Edited as wouldn't let me use the name that rhymes with Rick!

I saw that in the Enid Blyton books - how awful they feel the need to change the names. They shoudn't muck about with classic books like that!!

My mum read all the Enid Blyton books to me and my 2 closest sisters when we were kids. We loved them and the books were stored in the loft when I left home. A few years later she found them and fancied reading them to my 2 younger sisters and brother (there's a big age difference). Well, she phoned me heartbroken. Said she'd looked forward to sitting down and reading to them all day and the little sods had laughed hysterically every time she mentioned Rick or Franny (the original names  ) Asked them why it was so funny and apparantly my brother at about 10 'knew' what the names meant and had told my 2 sisters at 8 and 7 so they all got very silly over it. Then my youngest sister went to school and told her teacher mummy had read her a book with (d)ick and fanny in it. Mum called into school to explain herself. Not good for mum pmsl. |

So what does it mean in American then?! Americans call bum-bags "fanny packs" and that is a totally acceptable term, it would seem, as I have heard American tourists with families refer to their "fanny pack" with no giggling from the kiddies. When did it become a rude term here? And we all know D i c k is just short for Richard..... Its a shame when original books have to be altered like this!

Nia, I live in Wales and went to school with a girl called Nia, to me it's a pretty straightforward name, I can't understand why people don't get it?! I also think it's a lovely name  I find that non-welsh people sometimes refer to my mare, Sian, as Sy-Ann lol I'm a Vikki, although Victoria on my birth certificate as dad insisted I had a 'proper' name on it! Whatever that means! lol. Mum would go mad if anyone called me Victoria, as my name was supposed to be Vikki lol. My sister is the oppostie, she's called Sally-Anne, and my Mum hated it if anyone shortend it to Sally! |
