Well the offender is called James - any rhyming slang options with that one?! You could still use Barry - I find it successful in 83 % of cases . People seem very keen to let you know they're not called Barry . Or Dwayne .

Your not the only one! My name is Zoe and I don't mind close friends and family calling me Zo and even snowy, hence the user name. But it really annoys me when people you I'm not that friendly with shorten my name its Zoe!! Its basic manners in my book.
I get all sorts; Zo, Snowy, Zozo, Zozza, Zoz. The last three really really bug me, people get the 'look' when they call me by those nick names.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like it, I thought I was strange

whilst i understand the annoyance at being called the wrong name , or it being spelt wrong , have some sympathy for a girl that my mum went to school many many years ago , whose parents didnt /did think too much of the name that they gave their daughter ,----Henrietta , yes nice name !!!!! but her surname was Woolduck ( Henry ate a wool duck ) poor girl , i just hope she married some one with a better surname lol

Where I work I regularly email a Diane and a Dianne, a Jayne and a Jane, a Sue and a Susan - if I am in any doubt about the spelling or whether they use their full or shortened name I find an email I have received from them to make sure. I must admit if I cannot find an email from them or I am unsure whether they use full or shortened name I go with the full name as figure that cannot be wrong and is less likely to offend.
This post has been interesting to read as I had thought most people would be like me and not mind their names being shortened (or lengthened) so have been surprised to find how many people do not like their names being altered in any way.

At BSPS when I met Eiry I just said "Eeery" - Georgie was hilarious she said yes but you have to do it with a WELSH accent... But Eiry said "Eeery" is perfectly acceptable!

At the college where I work, everyone seems to have "ster" on the end of their name. E.g. Craig-ster, Vic-ster etc. Doesn't work with Nia, so I am just plain old Nia!

I also have an unusual name - Celeste. I get a lot of the Mary Celeste, like the boat - no my name is NOT MARY! My mum calls me Cel when she texts and my sister calls me Magpie or Mags (hence the username). I used to work in a pub and heard all manner of jokes about my name, most often I used to get called Stella. It is a nightmare when I go to shows and have to spell out my whole name (my surname is Gall as is Ghoul not Gal! My sisters also have unusual names - Bryher, shortened to Bry and Beshley shortened to Besh.
I really like having an unusual name - although it does cause a lot of explaining most of the time, but at least it stands out on job applications! I have only met one other Celeste, and that was at a horse show in Wales when we were parked next to them - it was very weird!! It is not often I meet someone with the same name. I dont think my sister Beshley has. her daughter is called Cicilly - which i think is beautiful but I can imagine her having to spell it out correctly when she is older! (not Cecily!)

My family call me Cati, which is an affectionate pet name for Catrin and i love it. ;D

daughter is gabriella shortened to gaby - don't mind but when we go for appointments people always say gabrielle so i always say 'a' mmm followed by dirty looks had ha ha
second daughter is Meghan - thats with meghan with an 'h'. poor kid did think it would be great to have a different spelling but she is now going to have to go through life saying my name is meghan , M E G H A N poor soul,
now surname is different spelt C A I N E not kaine or kain or cain easy way to do it is CAINE as in micheal caine but no relation!!! its funny when you watch people write the surname and they automatically write KAINE no sorry its CAINE takes a while for brain /hand co-ordination ha ha ha ha

Try having the name Sherlene! 99.9% of people will spell it incorrectly the first time and I have been called everything from Charlene to Shereen to Shirley and ISABELLE (?), if people call me something vaguely like it, I will answer, LOL!! My family call me Shad, but I don't like anyone else calling me that, including close friends (my Grandfather always said, people were given Christian names, so we must use them )!

I am Andrea. I answer to Andy but some people (including my brother) insist on calling me Ange, which I hate. A girl at work found out I hate it and in jest started calling it......and just to annoy her I started answering to it!! But if anyone else in work calls me Ange I ignore them!!
I spent 2 1/2 years answering to the name Emma as a guy I knew was convinced that it was my name no matter how often I corrected him

I think it's really important to listen when someone introduces themselves - whatever they call themselves, that's their name - simple. I'm a Catherine - not a Cath, Cathy, Kate etc - I NEVER introduce myself as anything other than Catherine, so why anyone has the right to 'change' my name is beyond me - I just think we're a nation of 'non-listeners' - very sad - we're all very keen to have our say, but to listen to someone else is a gift and one which most people, unfortunately, do not possess.
