You don't have to brown it first if you don't have time to, I try to if I can but it doesn't make much difference to be honest.
Just remember you need a lot less liquid than if you cook it in an oven as it doesn't burn off as much. I find you need a bit more flavour in the slow cooker as it retains the liquid more.
Loads of lovely stuff to cook - where to start!
Gammon in coke, beef bourguignon is one of the best, beef brisket is lovely. Slow cooked lamb yummy, chilli with chocolate, soup the list is endless!

Time to get the slow cooker out again. Its a Winter thing in our house.
Have often wondered about a chicken with no liquid, but I see there's a recipe that does it like that. I thought some liquid was always necessary.

I too have a slow cooker and love it, I only really use it in winter. I live sausages in cider and tend to be quite experimental.
I made a lovely lemon and banana cake today I'm quite proud of it!
Hope everyone is ok, I need to start thinking about the dreaded C word! I think I may be cooking this year as I have no excuse with my new kitchen!

Sorry, just catching up, no I don't brown my meat before cooking, and yes those jelly stock pot things are lovely!!! They do different ones for different meats, but I tend to keep the vegetable ones in as you can put them in anything! Oh and those giant yorkshire puddings are handy to have in the freezer as well you can fill them with all sorts out of your slow cooker.

I am having chicken thighs, shallots and mushrooms in a nice thick gravy. You use very little liquid with the Slow Jo. I would use the chicken jelly cube but I only have beef in the cupboard so its the old OXO cubes thickened with cornflour. I put a good slug of Lea & Perrins, seasoning and a hancful of mixed herbs and leave it to it.
Tomorrow I am having steak and kidney with the rich beef jelly thing (some people find the rich a little strong but I love it), the Lea & Perrins, etc. I am also going to throw in half a bag of that frozen casserol veg mix so probably no water at all needed.
I have used packet sauces but everyone in my house prefers the home made version, the juices of the meats and vegs really flavour in the slow cooker.

Morning all! I haven't braved putting no liquid in my slow cooker yet but you lot are persuading me! Brindle what's the benefit of doing the whole chicken in it? Do you not lose that lovely roasted taste? I'm intrigued! Hmm thinking of what to do for dinner tonight now!

Beautifully sunny here now but boy was it foggy again this morning.
Nasty crash on the road at the end of our lane again today, it's chaos out there. Somehow an old boy was on the wrong side of the road and hit our bus head on - written off the car and the bus was in a shocking state too, poor old guy. He seemed to be relatively chatty and conscious considering he was cut out of the wreck.
I hate that piece of road, can't tell you how many nasty accidents there are along there, at least once a month someone writes their car off but they still won't lower the speed limit or put in a camera, only one of those useless ones that flashes to the speed limit if you're going faster but it's in the wrong place and no-one notices it.
Oh dear, hope he's OK, and the poor bus driver and passengers as well, totally not their fault but he must be in shock.

That sounds nasty Haggismarmite. Hope everyone comes out of that OK.
Thanks Brindle. Think I shall give the dry chicken a try. I expect it makes plenty of liquid of it's own in the cooking process. Do you brown it off in the oven? I imagine it comes out quite white?
Liver and bacon sounds excellent. Haven't had that for ages. Will give it a go once I can get around the shops again. I like to inspect liver fairly thoroughly before I buy it, and don't want to leave that little job to OH. At the moment he's doing all the shopping!

Whats your receipe for pork casserole dazy? I have a pork fillet and a pork hock (what possessed me to buy that ) in the freezer and I am wondering what to do with them. Will that pork hock go in the slow cooker? Is it going to be everso fat? In which case, could I let it go cold and scoop the fat off the top and reheat, or would it go hard? The pork that is.

DL I like to bung a whole chicken in as it can cook while im out and about, it does come out quite white and isnt all crispy and roasted but it still tastes lush. My OH loves a roast but thinks the chicken tastes better from the slow cooker!!! Havent tried pork in it but might do.Didnt put my liver in the slow cooker in the end so its now bubbling away on the Rayburn with some carrots in it also going to roast a couple of parsnips

Afternoon all We're having a ready to roast turkey joint from M & S (reduced to £3.00!) with stuffing balls from M & S (reduced to £1.00), roast carrots, parsnips and squash, with mashed spuds and gravy. And yorshire puds, yummy yummy. Sagey, I've never done a hock but MIL used to roast them I think? If its not big enough to justify roasting why not do a pork casserole and just shove the hock in for flavour. I do that with ox tail in beef stew and it makes fab, tasty gravey. Or you could boil it up for a nice stock if you don't fancy eating it (is a bit fatty and gristly I think). You could use your pork fillet in that, then whatever porky, veggy gravy is left freeze it and use it as a base for your next casserole or as a nice gravy on a roast pork or gammon dinner. You could probably get away with freezing the hock bone as well and using that again. I know hugh fearnley whatshis face recycles bones that way! Destruction of maggie dog so far today 1. Bin out when I got up this morning. Been having a lucky dip again but there was nothing in it apart from an empty kitchen roll tube (shredded) and a cardboard sleeve (also shredded). 2. Brown inhaler stolen from my handbag-chewed up 3. A biro from my desk- also chewed 4. Her rubber shoe toy-destroyed but thats fair enough 5. 2 packets of gillette razor blades stolen from my handbag whilst on school run. Luckily its those impossible to get into packages, so just very chewed packets 6. OH's ciggies and lighter-stolen this morning from the kitchen table in the time it took me to go to the loo 7. Hair brush handle-chewed I wouldn't mind but shes was out this morning for 30 mins, then again when I got in from work with a ball down the garden for half an hour with me throwing it for her in an attempt to wear her out. Shes now flat out in her basket though, so I hope she is worn out!

AMWAP you probably dont want to hear this but if i was in your situation.i would be investing in a very large dog cage ;D give her a nice snug bed down one end, paper at other end,her toys and a few treats and pop her in whenever she is "home alone" Most dogs will see the cage as their own space and be happy to go in it ....honest. When i have puppies they are never left loose in the house if i am not there its just not worth the agro. ;D

thrilled to bits today.. Breena has been DNA cleared for PRA RCD4 which is a new gene that causes PRA (Night Blindness) in dogs. So basically that means she can have babies in a few years time as the KC wont register any pups that are not clear.. woop woop.. I told her and to be honest, she wasn't that impressed at the though just yet...
so I have decided my social - work life balance is crap..so I am off out tonight..
