Cuckoo lovely 13.00 hh working pony. I have always wondered about his breeding as I read somewhere that Roy Trigg bought him in the Westcountry and he was by a stallion called Royal Gift out of a Dartmoor cross. I bred a colt foal of this description in the late 60's , early 70's and have always wondered if this was him, but sadly never heard any more after selling him at weaning. Had all the BSPS books of that era but got lost when we moved house! Would be really interested to see a photo of him and have thought i must contact Guy Landau but never got round to it! I had another to produce by Royal Gift who went on to show jump on the Italian Pony team. I bred a pony who was champion at the BSPS winters, and they kept me in touch with all his winnings.

My favorite M&M of all time has to be the Dartmoor "Vean Hobajon" i remember he was ridden by a little boy . What a fantastic pony hes was winning puk Supreme of show and i think he won HOYS as a F/R and open small breeds on the same day , think in 2001.

Who remembers Glenfield Hill Cottage and his son Glenfield Cottage Whisper? Never ridden but superb breeding stallions with a "winners to runners" ratio for their produce that must be one of the highest, and multiple Championships in hand themselves.

I can remember Vean Hobajon winning at PUK, if anyone can remember they had all the children in the main ring on the last night, with the Supreme and Reserve, they then switched the spotlight on and the ponies went besert and trampled on a child. As per normal the child was mine she was badly bruised and the following day PUK told her topick anything she wanted from the Trade stands and they would pay for it - bear in mind she was 7 I was willing her to pick a pretty ponies jacket or a new saddle - what did she pick a Bl**dy stuffed dog in a basket I could have cried
He was a lovely pony though.
One of my faourite B's was the one that Nat Middlemass rode, I believe she still has him, I am having a senior momment as for the life of me I cannot remember his name

I have seen pictures of D Street Fighter and it looked like he had plenty of bone. One of my frustrations with a lot of section Bs nowadays is their spindly legs. I am sure Welsh mountain ponies are meant to have more bone than the average child's show pony.

12.2 - Keston Music, Ocean So Fair, Coveham Imagination 13.2 - Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant, Broadward Poletta (dam of Keston Poldark, Rosetta, Henrietta etc) Cusop Heiress 14.2 - Gems Signet, Oakley Bubbling Simone, Oakley Babette Will have to think about SHP's, LR's and FR's This really brings back memories for me; I was working at the Oakley Stud when Simone was with the Coopers, Babette had just had her first foal (I think!) and Oakley Bubbling Fun was born and of course I can never forget the amazing 'Bounce' Oakley Bubbling Spring who was then about 12 years old; he was still absolutely breathtaking! Bubbles was such a beautiful mare and so was everything she bred! And one of the first ponies I was given to 'do' was a little colt called 'Champers' or Harmony Bubbling Champagne! And one of my favourites (then a yearling) was 'Lovey' Oakley Loving Free out of the famous Set Free of Oakley! It was hard work but it was a privilege to know some of those wonderful ponies I remember Mrs Colledge taking me to vote for Mrs Thatcher to get into power as she was so excited about the first Woman Prime minister and told me I would be helping to make history

Myfanwy you were very lucky to get to work with such lovely ponies. Not so sure about Mrs College though...... your story of her doesn't surprise me as she was a bit of an eccentric!! Where are the 14.2 like that today. Did you take any photos?

Yes, I do have some very old photos; one is a lovely black and white one of Oakley Bubbling Spring that I was given and I still have some of the youngsters with their heads over the stable doors but the quality of some is not so good! I was with Mrs Colledge when she was in Whitchurch (Nr. Pangbourne) and I've still got some pics of the house and what was our accommodation (Mmmm!!!) And the lovely long-haired Jack Russells, 'Trin' and 'Woolly Woolson' who went everywhere with her! Yes, she was definitely an 'eccentric' and bloody hard to work for but I learnt so much there even though I was probably totally exploited!!! I do remember some of the girls that came and left after just a day or two when they realised there was no hot water in our shared room and we were only allowed one bath a week and 1/2 a day off (and that meant still having to do 'night stables' if you were unlucky). My mum was paying £5 for my keep as well and I was told how lucky I was when after six months I was given a wage of £2 per week and when I left two years later it had gone up to a massive £12 per week And yes you're right, the 14.2hhs of today are not the same; in fact all the ponies had more bone from what I remember. The riders were a lot more 'gutsy' than some you see today; they used to sit back and really ride them forward! I also have a Fab pic of 'Fun' being ridden in at a show (I don't recognise the rider though). I saw him a few years back and he didn't look that much different; he must have been about 20 yrs old!

myfanwy I was at Oakley stud in 1980 ( I was 1 of the ones that left after a coupleof weeks!!!!) I remember the freezing cold bedroom and the 1 bath a week and the marmalade sandwiches and the "greens" that Mrs Rose cooked at the start of the week that were reheated daily and were black by the end of the week!!!!!! Bubbling Fun was only 1 or 2 years old when I was there Bounce was still there Oh and then there were the peacocks that made that weird screeching sound that sounded just like Mrs College!!!!!!

Wasn't Toy Grenadier by Glenfield Toy Soldier? And Cottage Fair by Glenfield Hill Cottage? I used to help a bit with the covering at Glenfield many years ago, I learned so much there. I bought Glenfield Nicolette, dam of Toy Soldier, from them as a LR for my children.

Yes I was still there for some of 1980 and Eileen Rose was living in the bungalow at the other end of the yard with her son (can't remember his name?) Those 'marmalade sandwiches' were famous and anyone who worked there would always remember them The bread was sometimes still frozen and I think she used the cheapest 'catering' margarine and marmalade but you ate them 'cos you were so hungry by 11 o'clock!! We were never allowed real milk and we had to mix powdered milk up (not nice!)and weren't allowed to have toast (the toaster was expensive to run?) so it was 'beans on bread' most nights I remember always having to do the washing up after the lunch parties and the guests (some of the most famous of the Riding pony breeders) used to sit in the garden whilst we showed off the ponies to them! I remember her main rivals at the time being Elspeth Ferguson of the Rosevean Stud and a young Liz Mansfield from the Rotherwood Stud! And was it Janet Meyer (Keston Stud)? Does anyone else have any memories of Mrs Colledge; she must have been one of the most 'colourful' and 'eccentric' characters of the showing world?

myfanwy, I think Eileens son was called Richard (?) and am I dreaming or was there a pony tethered on the grass in front of the bungalow?? maybe he was the teaser? I do remember the beans and bread or bread and jam and the camp coffee!!!!!!! I also remember Mrs College going off to a show and telling me that a pony had been sold and the new owners would be along to pick it up and were paying in cash and that I must stuff the cash under my mattress till she got home!!!!!!

Yes the pony probs was the teaser 'Zaine', a little dartmoor (dartmoor type) and he was kept in the long box at the end of the yard and the mares were led up to it for him to 'tease' them before they were covered by the other stallions. Was 'Gunthwaite Fleur De Cloche' still there? He was a gorgeous blue-roan with black points, absolutely stunning! Yes, I think Eileen's son was called Richard and he was interested in becoming a jockey at the time. Did you end up working for anyone else or did that put you off for life?
