I don't think his riding ability is in doubt, but he does seem selective in those who he places up the line
Mrs Hesford would look for quality and elegance, and no-doubt manners. You haven't actually stated which catagory she is to be judging, so that won't be of much help!

I have not seen him ride at any other shows but on the occasion that he upset my mare he sat on the back of the saddle with his legs forward and hung on to her mouth - perhaps he was having a bad day !

yeeha and sparrow - maybe you consider the fact Mr T Chalmers may well be member of Horsegossip and as stated by others it is hard to get judges at all these days. On a general level people should remember that too, imagine how put out you would be if you gave up your time for nothing to look on HG and find everyone being rude about you! Everyone has different opinions of 'good riders'
As another thread states - think before you post!
And, by the way, I am not a judge !!!

Miss M G Evans as M&M jump judge and Mrs V Hampton for conformation? Any idea what they like please? Not sure about Miss Evans But Viv Hampton will look for very correct confirmation and a proper stamp of breed, doesnt like anything too light of bone and must be mannerly.

Highhill - It is interesting the way you have jumped to the defence of T. Chalmers. I cannot see that 'everyone' is being rude about him. I have not said anything that I would not say to his face if i ever met him again. I am telling the truth when i say he upset my horse by his style of riding. I am aware that these days a lot of riders do not have 'good hands' and this seems to be more acceptable now than it used to be years ago. Perhaps i am too 'old school' but then so are my horses who are, and expect to be, ridden sympathetically. This thread is about members asking for other members opinions my response was factual if this is not acceptable then threads of this type should not be left open.

I did not mean to the 'jump to the defence' of T Chalmers in particular - I dont even know the man. I was merely pointing out that some of these judges may come onto horse gossip and if people are too rude about them, we will not have any judges left.
Yes this is a thread asking for members opinions - the question was asked 'what does he look for in a hunter' - not how well does he ride !

I find Mr Chalmers to be a sympathic and professional judge. I would not hesitate to present him with our youngsters in the full knowledge that he will ride them and judge them on their merits. He judges what is before him and is not influenced by who is on top. Judges "work" may hours for little reward - maybe 40p a mile petrol money and a lunch!. Stop JUDGEBASHING - get a life, get over it and try harder next time.

Mr J.Conify for RoR, ride judge? Has ridden our PBA while a motorbike display went on in another ring and gave her a lovely ride even though all horses were upset a little by this, seemed to be sympathetic to all horses, he also rode a young horse in the class and did a lovely job and it went really well for him. Hope this helps.

thanks everyone i'm still undecided now as they all seem to be nice judges !! wendbarry they are all m&m first ridden or small breeds classes. i need a fair judge for the opens because although the pony has impecable manners and does everything asked my daughter stands out a mile as being a first ridden rider new to the open classes and will ask the judge to tell her the show even if everyone else has done it before her. thanks again for the replies folks.
