How big is your stable? I used to put a few bales across the corner to make me a bedroom then I didn't get trampled on and take my sleeping bag in there and become a squatter. You still don't sleep well but it's better than keep getting up to look and you can get the sound effects - lot's of wind unfortunately but you can hear the waters break or any heavy breathing! ps "better in than out at the moment!"

I just can't believe she is still going I had one of the other vets out to do jabs the other day and she said I don't think it's twins she wouldn't have got this far but my usual vet who knows his stuff said he is 100 percent sure. It's driving me insane. I know there is definately something not right though I've got another mare due the same day as her and although she is big this one is just a whole different shape. I managed to borrow a foal resuss kit from a friend so I'm all ready to go.

Fingers crossed it all goes well when the time comes.
When my dad was breeding HW hunters many moons ago, before scans were around, he had a mare give birth to twins, and both foals were fine, they were a little smaller then you would have expected for their breeding but otherwise both fine, they should have made around 16.2hh plus but ended up around 15hh.
Good luck!

Fingers and toes crossed for you.xxxx
I have a mare who was one of a twin, she is 28!, she is a Trakehner (branded and pink papered) very well bred(by one of the best stallions in the country) but only 14hh but with the body of a horse with short legs! She has been the most wonderful horse doing every thing that has been asked of her a real family friend, we have had her for so many years, even when my sisters and I grew out of her my mum took over because she gave up riding horses by then. She is now happily retired with her best friend and they both are nanny to the youngsters!!
I wish you the best of luck (try to remember the mare is the most important) and will be thinking of you.xx

Just got back from my hols and had to switch on my pc asap to see if your mare had foaled yet! I really feel for you as you must be so tired and exhausted!!! The longer she hangs on the better ( not for you i know ) again i think how many days she does go is not always an indication of whether there are twins or not as my sisters mare produced twins at full term. Keeping all crossed.xxx

No signs yet she looks so fed up!! I'm gonna have a chat with the vet today as we have hit 320 days I'm thinking it might be an idea to induce the birth as was suggested at the beginning of the thread by someone, that way we can be all prepared and everyone here at the ready, what do you all think? X

I was thinking about this thread yesterday when I took my dog for a walk and went past a field with two gorgeous chestnut twin foals in with their mother, I hope that all goes well for you, the mare and the foals!

Inducing a birth can be very risky and vets usually only do it as a last resort. If the mare is not stressed and the foals heartbeats are okay i would think your vet would be very reluctant. The problem with foals as opposed to human offspring is their lungs are very slow to develop and the longer a foal is in utero then the better the deveopment of the lungs, which is vital if you were to have a weak or poorly foal. I can understand you checking out every avenue and i am sure your vet will guide you wisely. Still crossing everything for you and your mare.xxx

We also discussed this with our stud vet the other day (just out of interest not to do that) he was of the opinion exactly as vjc has stated it really is not good for the foals due to the lungs not being mature enough xxxxxx

My old mare started having her foals earlier and earlier - the last was born three weeks early with legs going every which way but was fine - I was advised that she shouldn't have any more though as I was lucky with that one and any born earlier could have problems. In your case twins would be smaller and weaker anyway than a single. If mine I would go on waiting and hoping they would be born as late as possible and only when they were ready.

I would ask the vet, and maybe just to be on the safe side, ring a few more up??? surely at 320 days they will be ok, as isnt the gestation period 325days? My mare foaled on 326days, so one day over.... Anyway, I suppose the vet will know by looking at your mare> FINGERS CROSSED XXXX

anywhere between 320-370 days is considered to be the norm, if as the others have said you induce them, and their lungs arent ready you could cause more probs ,
