Earlier this year I showed under a judge that years ago I had lessons with and yes even though she doesn`t like me it is still unfair the way she judged me.
The judge was judgeing the jumping part of Whp and in the novice class she put me 4th and the pony she put in 3rd was very sticky over the jump and my pony jumped them all fine. But what amazed me was in the open class my pony went round brillantly and the pony she had put 5th ( below ) me in the novice she put 2nd above me in the open. When it jumped like a show jumper, jumped most of the jumps flat, did a rubbish display and had really bad conformation
Every show I have done under this judge she has put me one place out of the qualifiers. And in all these classes my pony has gone wonderfully. It is ok disliking some one but when it is someone`s hobbie ,that they adore doing it and there mental health is on the line. Maybe the sould just be nice and give them he qualifer because in the end is not the rider is the pony.

Its hard judging people you know you worry what will be said and atmospheres after the class, as i say to anyone who i judge it is how yor pony or horse goes on the day, not who you are and what you have done, Judging what is before you, its sometimes harder as you tend to know peoples faults if you know them and you have to look past everything and focus on what you are seeing before you. But again as a judge or show sec you will never please everyone all of the time

Although I no longer compete, I still groom for my friend at a high level. We have a list of judges that we know do not like her horses/style of riding etc, and where possible do not enter shows where that judge is going.
If, as sometimes happens, a judge cancels and a judge on our list takes over the committment, we treat the class as a schooling exercise and ignore the colour of the rosette. Quite often we have been pleasantly surprised with the end result. I know that this doesn't solve your problem, and the judge should take into account your horses way of going and not your personality, but unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world!
Incidentally, some of the judges who "don't like us", have given us good results on the youngsters, and obviously didn't like the picture presented by particular horses

Had the misfortune a couple of weeks ago to be called in first then dropped to third....but when I asked daughter what judge had said was told nothing other than well done. Daughter is polite and shy child but of course left wondering what she did wrong...must admit normally if dropped so far judge pipes up with some sort of explanantion which is better than silence I think you'll agree.....

my sister is always making me ask the judge why i was placed lower than original or not placed at all, if it is'nt already clear. i find it very embarrasssing but she just goes straight ahead and asks.............i always think, what would happen if i came under this judge again, would i not be placed again or maybe ( hopefully) she won't remember!!!

as long as you are polite most judges are quite happy for you to ask why they have placed you where they have

Obviously THECREMELLOSOCIETY looking at your Karma score your judging hasn't pleased to many people either if this scoring is anything to go by...still we're in the same boat lol !!.
Have to say though l totally agree with what you have said and it has to be judged on the day, shame that not every judge feels or thinks that way. However l do think that it is getting better but given our Karma score there must be a lot of judges on the Horse Gossip site

dont you think you need to get over this as it was weeks ago. did you even look at the marks, i thought the jump judge marked what she saw, and the conformation judge really knew her breed standards, i totally agreed with how the class was placed. have you ever thought you may be seeing things through rose tinted glasses,

nli, fine filly and little miss hot stuff - we will be checking to see if the ISPs for these 3 posts is the same. If you have a point to make that is fine, but no need to keep on about it. If you are genuinely 3 separate people, then fine.

What you are saying Guestless is just spot on lol, however just to say that it shouldn't be weather a judge likes you or not it should be judged on the performance of the pony/horse on the day.........Sadly l guess most of us have found ourselves in a situation whereby the judging has been unfair and most of us can predict who is going to win some classes, but hey for all those that blatantly cheat or are unfair there are those who are very good, and let me say the public/other competitors know all to well when a bad deed has been done given by the positve reaction l got back from both thoses sources earlier this year at a show.

I think that this, (pulling faces) is something that will always happen in the show ring may I add with a minority and not the majority of judges, My feelings are that we do the showing because we love it, and as long as you are pleased with the way your horse or pony went on the day, and you did your best that is all you can do, just enjoy it, and know that on another day it may be you at the top of the line and someone else further down line thinking that they should be where you are!

I did a pleasure class once at a show with an unfair judge...we had a video and I should have gotten first. The other riders weren't giving their cues clearly and not making transitions clearly when the judges asked them to. I think one rider cut someone off too...but I didn't miss a beat, but I got second to a girl who galloped around the ring when she was supposed to canter...then after the class when I was untacking the girl who got first told me she was friends with the judge and not to tell anyone! I'm not a tattle, and I'm not a sore loser so I didn't say anything, not like they'd have done anything anyway...but I'm convinced it's just part of the show ring, especially when you are doing local shows...you're bound to run into a judge that you know.

Hate to say it but showing is a great leveller. Some you win, some you lose BUT don't go in knowing someone will judge you unfairly. We've take our county pony to a pony club show (Daughter is a member and wanted to go with her mates) and was put last in turn out and told that because she wins a lot and others wern't going to so give the others a chance! Daughter said to judge " wouldn't it be better that people knew that this pony club has county level members and we'd get more members!" Judge told her not to be cheeky and put her last in show pony class and told it was for being rude earlier!!!!!

P.S following week same judge watching a county class congratulated my daughter for standing champ and asked her if she remembered her! (Thankfully my kid is polite and said " Oh yes, I remember you!!!!)

Wendbarry1 thats disgusting you pay the same money no matter what level and should be judged the same, my pony is 4 & my Jockey 5, the pony has only ever as a youngster competeed in hand affiliated and at wpcs association as when we called at a local show and let my daughter do a class, as a yearling the judge told me he was sorry my pony was blind in one eye !!!!! ( hes a section a sabino he has a blue eye !!!) so never bothered, my son hasnt even got his rising trots proper yet so we are doing somelocal levels as a practise and so we can do a variety of classes we won at our 1st RC show and went champion in hand, but then the sour grapes started, oh she has done county and shouldnt be here !!! Was a highish level RC show, plenty take county level ponies, we were spotless and went very well. If a jude marked me down and said anything like that i would be furious, you judge what you see on the day, if you have a ring full of ponies (ridden) and you know some are county competitors they can still make a boo boo, but if they are the best of everything in the class that is how you wish to mark it, shows should take more responsibility for the wording of their classes if they dont want to allow non county ponies in, for instance have a class for beginners or a genuine novice class. I have one pony and he was bought to be an alround family pet, which he has done, he cant help it that he looks to be a good standard ( well i think so through his placings but wont gloat as hes my baby) and happens to do ok.

i have to say i show at county level and it is purely a hobby for me i have good ponies and have done better with some than others but i do not pick my judges as such i dont do very many shows as i will only travel upto an hour and a half at most i go because i enjoy it if i get in the top 3 then great but if i dont i never moan about it i enjoy getting them ready and showing them off and that is it for me everybody judges differently and they always will my opinion is i like what i have got in my field and its me that has to look at it everyday noone else and as long as i like what i see does it matter what anyone elses opinion is some judges love what i have and some done thats the showing world im afraid

Queensland l think that is a very good way to look at it but unfortunately some of use are a lot more competitive...I know l certainly am, however l always go with the attitude...GO TO LOSE BUT WIN IF I CAN...We tend to lose more than we win so at least we don't come home too disappointed.
Like you the ponies are paramount and no matter how my ponies do l still love them for what they are, weather they come first or last is immaterial.

We do county shows, we do local,BUT, we do local because sometimes I can't afford to do county!!! We've been lucky, some judges like our ponies, to be put down in a class because you look good or go well isn't fair to the kid, pony or furious parent seething at the side of a ring!!!!

some years ago our local riding centre starting holding shows where a friend of mine worked, I didnt go to the first few shows and the centre owner/judge said it was digusting that I didint support the local show with my ( at time very good ridden B), anyway the follwing two years we went to this show and stood supreme of the show (one pony the first time and another the second year) and was then told I shouldnt bring my county standard ponies to this small shows as it was unfair the the local riders???!!! ! They were quite happy to take my entry money/

Iv had that one, i used to have a palomino 14hh sp who wasnt quite good enough for county level, but we used to win loads local, the bit*hing was unbelivable! It took 4yrs of hard work to get her where she was [used to be a complete loon]. This year alot of local shows have got royal london qualifiers so they are going to get county animals arent they, they have to expect it. Im sure we will all get "that pony shouldnt be here its not fair"! Locals harder to win any way, all types all mixed in together!

Agreed, our pony club show in April was full of county winners and judged by nps, and wpc judges. I think "locals" need to wise up, either take the money and have loads of entries or don't and see how much money they take without us!! I'm boycotting a few locals this year and staying home, not worth the back stabbing outside the ring
