Dont know whether this is classed as a classic comment , to me rather shocking!! Judge in a 12shp class at a BSPS show this weekend told 2 jockeys there ponies needed shooting ! Now wether this was a flippant remark or not , perhaps the judge shou;d of chose her words a little more wisely.... Sorry but I dont believe any judge would actually say that to a competitor did you actually hear it said or is this hearsay!!

And one at a local show this weekend, in a lead rein class, told the leader they had a nice little jockey - why didn't they go to Llanybydder (local mart) & buy it something decent for it to sit on? Pony is very well loved and does well - apparently both leader & child were in tears, loaded up & left the showground & have taken a lot of persuading to ever go back in the ring again. What a shame I think that perhaps judges don't realise how cutting that they can be sometimes, and I hope that not too many people have lost confidence as a result.

my friends daughter was in the 12-16yr equitation class at weekend at a local show after the class the judge turned round and said to her " i expected better riding considering how old you are, i suggest that you better pay for some riding lessons but if you can't afford them then you better buy a book on how to learn to ride!!!" shocking!!!!

I was once told in a very spiteful way ''Dont look at your pony while your getting him to trot '' in an inhand class,i was turning round to try see why he wasnt wanting to trot. later on in the class the judge promptly pulled out first place and waited another 5 minutes to choose the rest with a very confused and disgusted look on her face. There was also a special prize for the best condition horse over 20 years old and as it started to rain she promptly left the ring without giving out this prize either!
Oh and with a green ribbon in a very giddy anglo arab at his first local show i got from numerous people including 2 judges and a steward ''is he a stallion what does the green ribbon mean ive never seen one of those before''
:/

I was at a PC show last week, the judge in our ring was very sweet with everyone but didn't have much of a clue. Every class bar two went around the ring the wrong way. When it came to our lead rein class, a right old mish mash of shapes and sizes of ponies and kids, some toddlers. She got them to get off and lead their ponies, much to the horror of some parents. She did a tack inspection like it was a T & T class and after asking my daughter how old she was, four said child, she asked ' did you plait your pony yourself?' Zoe obviously said no, mummy did it. BUT it left me wondering..............my plaits must have looked like a four year old did them

I was told my cob would of won the coloured class but he was too fat so he got second. I then did the class after witch was best condition and expected as she thought he was too fat to not be placed as there were a lot in it, he came second!!. So i was bit confused but very happy.

not quite a judge's comment but........
my little girl did a young handler class at a local show. i had always taught her to walk away, turn a little circle then trot her pony straight back towards the judge. this she duly did, but it suddenly occurred to me as she went flying up the ring that the judge wasn't going to move! and she didn't! so my daughter had to do a le mans style swerve at the last minute. and was placed last, despite the fact none of the other kids had a clue what they were doing. but hadn't nearly flattened the judge ...........

Judge told me 'pony was under height in comparison to the others in the ring'. Judge suggested next time I put him in the 'correct height' category. He was 12.2 in a 14.2 and under class. This happened to me!! Except the other way round, i got marked down because i put my horse in the 'wrong' height category and he 'didnt stand out against the bigger working hunter horses'. Ohh i'm sorry i didnt realise my 14.2 couldnt come in this 14HH and over class... Atleast i did 'the best clear round and a lovely show'!! Silly woman!

My mare is always referred to as 'he' Same with mine! As a judge, I don't mark the undercarriage, so unless I have reason to specifically note the sex I refer to everything as "He".

Not quite a judge but a show officials comment. At a show on Saturday I went off to find the secretary to get my number after lots of umming and ahhing secretary said she did not know where the Clydesdales numbers are. Main guy came along and said " hmmmm good question. As Clydesdales aren't horses are they". Nearly peed myself laughing and told him to tell my 'non horse' clydesale that!!!

After the very-nice-but-completely useless judge today at an unaff show asked all the lead-rein m & M's to trot on.........together. Then moved a pony up to second as it has 'lots of presence', ermmmmmmmmm actually eyes on stalks, spooked and kid nearly fell off in the individual. (Dead safe LR pony that!)
The icing on the cake for me was walking back to the lorry park she was behind me and said good bye and well done to my little girl, so I said thank you politely, she then said........I had no idea what to do, I hope I got them in the right order...........OMG!!!!!!!

:)OMG- she should not have said that!! (If in doubt say nothing?) Just shows inexperience? A 'local' judge should at least know what it expected/required in a class? Hope you had a good day.

LOL Garrettponies we had one very similar in knowledge but different in that she was very unpleasant, years ago. Took a lovely but very green very well bred and typey sec B in a ridden M&M class, we were pulled in near the bottom after a good go round below coloured cobs, matching red numnahs and nosebands etc. Pony came out and wrong legged on both reins and humped in it's gallop Got moved up to third and very sour faced judge told perplexed young jockey " you shouldn't be in this class it is for mountain and moorland ponies not show ponies but you did such a good show you left me no choice, stick to your own class in future!"

We did have a nice day, thanks. My little girl won her first ever first prize in tiny tots lead rein , judge in that made them get off and on again! Zoe also got her 'dream' of a pink first prize as the rosttes were all sponsored they were colours of sponsors choice, pink and pale blue. Zoe said 'told you mummy you can get pink firsts!'
No the lady in question shouldn't have been judging, apparently it should have been me but they forgot to ask me..........................that makes it even funnier really!

What I can't understand is why people agree to judge knowing they know nothing about what the class is about, let alone how to evaluate competitors. Even if the show organisation has made a boob like this surely they could rustle up someone with SOME clue about what goes on, even if they don't normally judge?

I agree Sarahp, she did also ask one competitor what her mini shetland was as well which goes to show she had absolutely no idea what she was looking at, as lets face it, shetlands mini or otherwise are pretty obvious!
There are lots of people in our area who show themselves and would be happy to judge unaff and have a good idea of showring etiquette and what they are looking at. I find it embarrassing that they drag someone in who was, although very nice and well meaning, clueless with a capital C. After all, we PAY, to be judged unaff or aff.

My daughter has done a bit of judging at RC level round here, her way of putting something back. When I've seen her in action she's done a good job, and tries to help those who are starting out in showing too. I'm sure there must be others like her on the ground on the day, maybe helping out elsewhere, stewarding or the like, even handing round tea or competing in other rings/classes, who could take over in an emergency, while those willing to help out but not experienced like garrettponies' judge could take over the tea or whatever.

"Is my highland an andalucian"?? - ( he was rather excited) " ;D I've had exactly the same out hunting - not a judge admittedly, but still! Best comments I've had: (in an M&M championship) "It's just a bit small for a connie"....er yes, it's a highland! (to a 10 year old who was the only clear round in the WH on my fab coloured pony) "I've placed you 4th dear, he's a super pony & if he'd been a solid colour he would easily have won."....WHAT!! (different judge to me on same coloured in a turnout class) "I think you're in the wrong line dear, the juniors are over there."...Yes, thank you. I'm 21. (this was some time ago & at the time I was a bit miffed. Would welcome comments like that now I also frequently get comments on dressage sheets along the line of - a super little horse who loves to show himself off....It's a mare!!!! I know you're not examining her up close but surely that much is obvious! When querying a haflinger winning an M&M class - "Well yes but they're native to their own country"
