Twelve year animal ban and suspended prison sentence for David Hinde Posted on 19/03/2015 by Leanne Plumtree | Leave a reply A man from Leeds has been banned from keeping any animals for 12 years and given a suspended prison sentence after being convicted of six allegations under the Animal Welfare Act, including breaching a previous ban on keeping equines.
David Hinde (D.O.B 7.1.65) of Main Street, Aberford appeared before Leeds Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday 18 March).
After a six day trial which began on Friday 6 February and concluded on Friday 13 February, David Hinde was convicted of two allegations of breach of ban; one of causing unnecessary suffering to a bay pony called ‘Fred’ by failing to provide veterinary treatment; two of causing unnecessary suffering to two individual pedigree cats, ‘Pixie’ and ‘Peaches’, and one of failing to meet the needs of 52 pedigree cats.
RSPCA inspector Nick Welch said: “The RSPCA was contacted after Fred (pictured right) was put to sleep on veterinary advice at a field where he was being grazed in Preston, and four other ponies were transported from the same location. Fred was collapsed, and emaciated.
“An Animal Welfare Act warrant was executed at David Hinde’s address in October 2012 and a mobile phone, horse passports and paperwork, including a knackerman’s invoice relating to the removal of Fred’s body, were seized. Text messages found on a phone used by David Hinde were described by the District Judge in his verdict as ‘highly incriminating’.
“Whilst on site concerns were raised about cats being bred and sold for commercial gain at the premises, all of them pedigree British Shorthaired cats. Fifty two of the cats were found to have an infestation of ear mites, which caused them suffering. Pixie (pictured below) and Peaches both had extensive and untreated gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums.”
David Hinde was sentenced to 20 weeks custody, suspended for 12 months. He was banned from keeping any animals for 12 years.
Cynthia Hinde (D.O.B 13.2.39), his mother, and Raymond Hinde (D.O.B 18.7.35), his father, both of the same address, were also sentenced today after being convicted of six allegations in their absence. One of the convictions was for causing unnecessary suffering to 52 cats by failing to seek veterinary treatment for ear mites; two were for failing to meet the needs of the same 52 cats; one was for causing unnecessary suffering to a cat called ‘Bertie’ with untreated dental disease and the other two were in relation to cats Pixie and Peaches and their untreated gingivitis. They were both banned from keeping all animals, except dogs, for five years, and fined £500 each payable at £10 each per month.
RSPCA inspector Welch said: “Today’s sentencing concludes a long and complex investigation relating to the three defendants, David Hinde and his parents Cynthia and Raymond Hinde.
“The RSPCA welcomes the verdicts of the court and hopes the sentences passed today send out a clear message that keeping animals is a privilege and one which should always hold the welfare of the animal with the utmost priority, whether they be kept as pets or for profit.
“The suffering endured by Fred, the pony in this case, who was so thin that he had collapsed and was unable to stand, is inexcusable in any arena, but is aggravated by the previous convictions of this defendant. Sadly Fred did not respond to veterinary intervention and had to be put to sleep to end his suffering.
“The cats were in a sorry state, the contrast between how they were then and how they are now is unbelievable.”
The Hinde family refused to sign over any of the cats to the RSPCA until the verdicts were announced on 13 February. Efforts to rehome the cats are now underway via RSPCA branches and Cats Protection.

Infact I see it as a total waste of donated money, from a public who have donated to a charity to try to prevent animal abuse. It is clear the focus has been mainly on the cats in the report, ear mites and gingivitis are common ailments especially amongst farm cats and stable yard cats and would appear pretty trivial really. The cruelty to the ponies seems to have been made less attention of, which included starvation and total neglect as the pictures show a pony beyond saving. It would appear the RSPCA did a crappy job especially with the funds available to them, the guy has, it appears, to have already breached and is still allowed to keep dogs. £10 a month? RSPCA get yourself some proper barristers instead of spending dollars on your buildings in my opinion you are rubbish whatever angle I look at you.

I'm speechless!! Ear mites and gingivitis are common, and very painful and debilitating illnesses, therefore NOT trivial! They are easily treated but the point is they weren't treated and these cats suffered so why do you trivialise their suffering and neglect? The state of the cats was an aside to, and only came to attention, on the investigation of the state of the pony Freddie which unfortunately could not be saved. The initial ban was on the basis of starvation of the ponies so how can you blame the RSPCA for the outcome, the final judgement was down the the presiding judge not the RSPCA

People continue to focus on the RSPCA to scapegoat them because the man in question has spent so long brain washing with his propaganda....

Have you ever had ear ache or toothache? It can be so bad that it's debilitating. Ear mites and gingivitis are chronic, painful conditions. An animal is helpless and relies entirely on it's owner for treatment. These 52 cats did not receive any as he failed to seek veterinary advice. They were not yard cats, they were pedigrees bred for profit. The photo of the poor pony speaks for itself but do not down play the other animals' welfare in his care. Mr Hinde can continue to spout his innocence and bad mouth the RSPCA all he likes but at the end of the day he was found guilty by the British justice system at a trial presented by the body who's job it is is to prevent cruelty to animals. A guilty verdict is not easily reached and the evidence must have been sufficient to support it. So I agree, why on earth are people still supporting this man?

The ponies were transferred into his parents names so I suppose they have carried on breeding. Now that the parents have a ban, I wonder what will happen to the ponies?

I am not supporting him or hating him don't wish to be involved, but one thing i found really wrong last night when reading his status is a lady said she would happily take some ponies as they are becoming endangered and to save RSPCA getting hands on them to get them into good hands and homes before it gets to this well a few people offered actually, cant remember exact words but he said if you are only interested in the ponies and not what is going on then please remove yourself from my page. That really annoyed me as i thought that's someone there offering to take some ponies and give them a good home now, ponies have been through enough stress and he will not beat the RSPCA.

I've refrained from commenting on this subject until now as I was aware of the ban breach but not the extent of it. for those who are supporting him, are you saying the actions that caused FRED to be in the state he was acceptable??? If so you should all be banned from keeping animals too.
There were 52 cats that were suffering, how can anyone think this is ok to behave in this manner. It beggars belief.

Its amazing isn't it that there are still "friends" with him.... Do they not see the evidence..... or is it that they think one day he will return to judging so need to be his "friend" as that might get them a red rosette? Obviously the state of the animals is acceptable to his "friends" and as written above. This would begg the question of the standard their animals are kept in if gingivitis, starvation dehydration and a long slow painful death is their perception of acceptable!!

I wholeheartedly agree that it is unacceptable to keep animals if you are going to ignore their medical needs and this family have paid the price of their neglect. I believe one group of supporters are more concerned about the ponies than the humans because if animals are seized and rehomed by RSPCA it is with the understanding they will not be used to breed. This would result in some old and valuable bloodline being lost from the gene pool of this endangered breed. If that is the case then I understand the concern. Years ago a parrot breeder had countless birds seized because he could not prove he had bred them (as opposed to illegally importing them) The majority of the birds subsequently died, some of them seriously endangered (less than a hundred known in the wild) I do think the RSPCA need to assess their rehoming strategies in these cases in order to preserve endangered species. My personal dealings with the RSPCA are not positive in the slightest, I dealt with ignorance and rigid thinking while trying to foster & rehome a cruelty case. The animal in question was brought back to health by my family, despite our concerns that he would mot thrive if rehomed from the local centre officials insisted & the dog was destroyed two months later because it's condition had seriously declined while in their care. All our time and effort wasted.

Can somebody please explain to me if as has been stated one or twice if the bloodlines are so valuable then why does the DPS /or rare breeds not step in and take some of these mare /colts and give them to well known breeders if they want them
surely if they were that rare this would be the case - or are they not this seems to be what Mr Hinde is basing his argument on
personally i think 12 years should mean 12 years and no animals

I was told there are enough pony's not in this families ownership that carry the same lines, so the DPS don't have to or want to get involved, as the lines will not be lost even if these ponies are rehomed to non breeding homes. I should think loving kind homes that feed them would be a start! Horrific state of affairs

I am shocked and stunned that people I thought were my friends and who I believed to be fellow animal lovers are supporting him! How can anyone support any degree of abuse/ neglect against animals, let alone when it is on this scale, it really is horrific! What frightens me is that he thinks he has done nothing wrong and is innocent, if he cannot see what he's done is wrong, then god help these ponies if they are left in his care :-( To answer the question regarding his so called rare bloodlines, there are sufficient of the bloodlines owned by other people to ensure no lines are lost, he is just using this ploy as a desperate measure to cling on to the ponies when in reality they would be better off pretty much anywhere but than with him!

As far as I'm concerned, any panel judge of any society who is seen to be supporting David Hinde should be removed from the judges panel, for bringing the society into disrepute. I am still disgusted as the simpering, hangers-on. Coo-ing over how awful it must be for him and his family! Not as awful as starving to death eh?!

Well the story has now hit the Press, here is the link to the Horse and Hound article www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/dartmoor-pony-breeder-david-hinde-banned-478732The Yorkshire Standard states that a further four ponies in a shocking state were also removed by the RSPCA from the field in which poor Fred (who was destroyed)was taken...he kept that quiet didn`t he! The situation regarding the 52 cats is also reported :-( It`s an absolute disgrace that David Hinde has allowed this to happen whilst he still had a ban iin place , made even more sickening by the fact he has so many blinded followers, some of who I`m horrified to say are WPCS Panel Judges! Shame on David Hinde and shame on those who support him

any cruelty to animals should be severly punished that this man who was supposed to be a respected breeder and showing judge should cause such cruelty to these poor animals is beyond comprehension and that he has used every excuse he can think off to pass the buck is disgusting. I am not a surrporter of the rspca as I think they waste a lot of money but in this case good on them .

I totally agree with Liza...judges etc who are colluding and accepting od the abuse of our beloved equines should be removed from Panel....I for one will be writing however I do notice a high profile person is supporting him. As for the celebrity who Hinde says is behind him, this is Jennifer Saunders and she signed the extremely misleading initial petition on line. I do notice the facebook page David Hinde The truth has been taken down. It quite ironic as it had more members in 2 hours that Hinde petition did in two days!

And actually I would extend the removal to any member not just judges. If a society can take action against you for a connection/family members behaviour for relatively trivial actions then they must act with regard to being seen actively supporting a convicted animal abuser IMO!
