Possibly worth linking to a very good website that has good advice on turnout and what to do in a showing class. rehorses.com/

This may be controversial and i don't mean to offend anyone, but i really dislike pink tweeds on M&M's, also huge glittery hair bows, very yellow jodphurs, and leaders lacking adequate support! Sorry i'm not meaning to be nasty to anyone but all these things detract from the pony and the picture which i was always taught was the main thing!

I agree darts, I'm definitely of the old fashioned 'less is more' school. Don't like the bling, or very loud checks on a tweed, and I believe someone else mentioned it but I much prefer the straight topped boots with the garter straps. The eye should be drawn to the horse or pony, the rider is just there to do a job, IMO, and neat and businesslike is best.

Darts, the proof is in the pudding....A few years ago a friend bought a pink tweed (its her fav colour!) , and wore it at PUK for its first outing, after several classes , without the sniff of a rosette, she went back to her original jacket and went on to win the next couple of classes she entered...Pretty ponies tried to persuade me to buy a pink tweed to go with my black dartie and blonde child...Absolutely not was my reply ..I want to be taken seriously!!!

at the end of the day it is personal preference and also what the judge likes.
both pony and jockey need to look professional. i agree re pink tweeds on older jockey's but my 5 year old daughter has one for lead rein m&m and we have won everything we have entered this year, with the judges commenting on how they loved the jacket.
sometimes when you are in a class of m&m's and half the class is grey section A's then it is good to stand out and be noticed.
surely a lead rein jockey needs to have a little fun, how do you get young kids to keep shirt , waistcoat and jacket on in baking heat otherwise. but as the get older then the dress code should deffinately mature with them.

Agree about the youngsters, let them have fun and in ten or twenty years time hopefully they'll still be showing.

o m g.. i nearly bought a pink tweed, until i thought about it. reasons why i didnt buy 1 - thought it would make the grey horse look gay - already had a lovely tweed and lastly thought my best mate wouldnt talk to me again if i got one!!
why do people like the old style long boot? i have a pair of sarm boots which i think look more elegant. and are sooo comfy!

Well its personal preference again, but to me the boots with the shaped tops are more of a dressage boot? The straight tops are more traditional, and to me look more appropriate, but that's just my own opinion, others may differ!

I do agree with milliesmum about the straight top boots, but i have to admit i have a pair of high cut top ones as i couldn't get a pair of straight tops to fit and all they did was cripple me! I thought it would look much more elegant to be able to run my pony in hand rather than limp along! I also nearly had a nasty moment with my straight tops as they nearly come off in a class at NPS champs, cantering round trying to pull up your boots is not fun!
Another pet hate, yellow gloves on bad hands! (sorry i've just realised i have loads!!)

Must admit i'm not a fan of pink tweeds/ christmas decorations in the hair or bling on ponies. Someone bought me a plaited browband for my birthday this year and i was really worried about wearing that but now its on i actually quite like it on the pony but his forelock does cover most of it anyway. I totally abide by the "less is more" rule. Some classes are beginning to become more of a fashion show which is not the reason we go into the ring. (i dont think........ )

i do workers so its to be less and natural.. got told once to put a breastplate on the grey one as it would show off his shoulder more and might add sparkle.
why put something i dont need on the horse?! the saddle fits prefectly well!

could we please add some dress code for the gents as well, I know that we are a rare breed bu we still need some advise ie; don't black hat Except topper, is it correct for a gent to wear a blue hat, I always thought they were for the ladies ? Its been a long time since I have done ridden classes so I'm having to start again, so come on girls tell us whats hot and whats not.

Have to agree with HP, dont forget us guys that like to ride too.
I wear a blue hat when I'm riding, is it true blue is meant for ladies?? Not that it bothers me too much as I wear a lady's jacket too as its fitted better to my slender physique!
But then if only people saw the socks I wear under my long boots!!

Well pigsear and halfpass, my 2 boys wear navy charles owen xps but they are only 4 & 5yrs, when they are your ripe old ages they should def. be in black (hats not funeral suits!) that isj ust IMO.
I have always been brought up that male (adult) riders always wear black hats, tweed jacket or black jackets, (hunting/eventing/dressage etc)
Men Black hat & tweed or black hat & black jacket, and black with hunting pink or tails.
Ladies Navy replaces the black for men. Navy jacket looks so much more elegant on a lady than black.

Thanks for the tips, but I am far too tight to buy another hat in black! And my tweed jacket has a navy inset on the collar so I think I look quite dashing when aboard! I am usually a stickler for tradition but I anit changing!! Cuckoo you mentioned hunting pinks, I am so wanting to get into an evening performance to wear these but a friend said I cant because I havent hunted with the quorn. Is that correct, anyone? Dreams dashed!!

Yup sorry forgot the boys! Men; black bowler (or strap hat) & tweed. For evening - black hunt cap & black jacket/ black topper and tails. Women; navy hunt cap (or strap hat) & tweed/ navy. For evening - navy jacket & hunt cap/ navy jacket and black topper Phew I suppose it does all yet very confusing! Think the basic rule is ladies stay away from black. It was originally because it's the colour of mourning; and if you're in mourning you shouldn't be riding

regarding hats you should also remove the tails of the bow at the back or sew under so that they are not loose.

shelleyj, google "Davies riding boots." They're in Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale. Tel 01495 313045. Make fantastic made to measure boots, whatever style you require. Quite expensive but worth it. Has she stopped growing yet, as you may need a mortgage to keep her in new boots every year? Good luck.
