I really don't like long brown boots or black saddles. Both are incorrect IMO. Also for best turn out/best condition classes, don't put oily stuff over a dusty/dirty pony to create shine. Yuck!! Try bathing the pony instead, lol

I know again this is preference but I don't like to see the children with their hairs just in a pony tail, i think buns or plaits look tidier for me.

for number"strings" i use some black or brown searing elastic with loops tied on the ends so they can loop over jacket buttons, one tight over the button so it stays on the jacket when you take it off, it doesnt get lost then. Thanks for that - had never thought of that and as the proud (usually) mother of 2 young children I have been getting through loads of those elastics.

Always make sure your jacket is the correct length! I usually have to get our adjusted when we buy them as they are too long - nothing worse than sitting on the back of the jacket when doing rising trot! what is the correct length? as at the shows you see people with short jackets that just comoes off the hips or jackets that just comes down abit further.

I have bought our last 5 jackets from Showing Selection & they have always taken measurements & sent them for alteration - I think they aim for the bottom of the jacket to touch the back of the saddle when you are seated.

Oh yes, I also dislike the clip on numbers! A nice subtle piece of elastic with loops on either end to go over the jacket button! I do keep intending to sew elastic onto my daughter's joddies - joddy clips are such a pain as they don't stay on! I know it's petty but I dislike the pre-tied clip on hair ribbons, especially on hunters and M&Ms, I much prefer loose tied ribbons. Just a personal preference of course. Hair nets - everyone needs one when riding if they have whispy hair that could escap from under their hats! My little girl always wears one, even though her hair is plaited, otherwise there's blonde whisps everywhere. I just make holes in the back and pull her plaits through. However I don't like the thick heavy dinner lady hair nets - the fine hairnets available from Boots are so much more discrete I don't think it should be a fashion parade (speaking especially as a LR mum!!!) And I really hope ponies aren't judged according to the price or "fashionable-ness" of the rider's tweed. However it is important to get the turnout correct, as the judge is looking at the overall picture, which of necessity includes the rider. And you don't have to break the bank to take care of the little details...

I hate jacket sleeves which are too short, seems to be a fashion statement not just outgrown as the season comes to the end.

urggghhhhhhhh big jackets and nasty tweeds send shivers down my spine no a nice jacket, i always like to get one that no body else has nothing worse than standing next to someone in the line with the same jacket on! though sometimes you cant avoid that And make sure they compliment your horse cant beat a nice brown tweed on a chestnut always trim your number. and make sure your shirt and tie are smart and that they too compliment the jacket and pony.

hat elastic is better for numbers as it is round and not as thin as shearing elastic .always keep it in your jacket pocket so it is always there for your next show!

Well as a slightly older person, ahem, I cant say that I like the short jackets, you know the ones that look like they 3 sizes too small , just a nice one that skims just past the behind.

Buy some brown boots, as dark as possible and polish them with ox-blood boot polish. After a few goes you will have achieved the colour you desire.
