Thanks for the tips, but I am far too tight to buy another hat in black! And my tweed jacket has a navy inset on the collar so I think I look quite dashing when aboard! I am usually a stickler for tradition but I anit changing!! Cuckoo you mentioned hunting pinks, I am so wanting to get into an evening performance to wear these but a friend said I cant because I havent hunted with the quorn. Is that correct, anyone? Dreams dashed!! Pigsear that is utter rubbish about the Quorn!! I am not sure the etiquette for wearing hunting pink in an evening performance but I can guarantee that it has nothing to do with hunting with the Quorn! The general rule out hunting is that hunting pink is principally worn by hunt servants or long standing hunt subscribers, this determines who has authority on the hunting field therefore they are easy to identify in the event of an incident etc.

I thought the bow part was OK - you had to sew up the loose 'tails' at the end? Be difficult to remove the bow bit!!

Yep the tails at the back should be sewn up or tucked under. On a strap hat it's hardly noticeable (I sew mine up anyway) but on a Patey type hat they are longer and just need tucking under when you put the hat on.
I believe you should only wear a scarlet coat if you are an MFH; but Im sure some people don't follow that!
I don't think any of the things in this post are going to affect your placing - it's just knowing what is 100% correct. It's about creating the whole picture to look as professional as possible

In hand yuckies - big earrings and jeans get me. Turnout should be smart and workmanlike, if you want bling have a colourful tie and nice tie pin - any more than that just looks bad.

What's with the whips in ridden classes? Am always being told "if you need to whip your horse, you shouldn't enter it!' Have cane's gone out of fashion or are some horses really in need of a slap when the judge isn't looking?

I agree wth the joddy elastics, being swen in, have seen a couple of clips ping off before now. The tucked/sewn in tails on a hat is a very old hunting tradition if i remember rightly.
Copying, trimming and laminating numbers for shows is another, espech if you got the same number for a couple days, say at a champs or summat.
I personally have had to get gaiters for when I ride (someday) as I have a dodgy leg. They have the curved top. Fo me the fit is more important than the cut. I do like the old ones with garter straps though, but I just could nt get into them LOL

You do not remove the bow just the tails it is old fashioned etiquette again that only hunt staff have tails hanging on hats.

As much as I really enjoy the humour in these threads and I have contributed to it, I think we ought to get back to the subject title, please. Go to 'pigsear's holiday' if you wish to keep up with his escapades.

OOOPS, sorry back to the thread.... Personally hate the standard issue tape for numbers. Little bit of matching elastic looks far neater, together with a shaped number card. (though not cut into fish shape like OH did, when left to his own devices!) Over shoes on boots keep them clean and mud free and therefore no slippy stirrups.

Re the number tape, we always use a length of toning plaiting thread, and trim the corners of the number. If you are competing two horses, you can thread the two numbers back to back on one string, then just flip it over when you swap horses. Just remember which one is which!!
I've seen mums lift kids onto the pony in their socks, then put the pristine boots on once child is mounted!

A lint roller comes in handy for removing any horse hair off jacket. Especially if riding a grey horse in the evening performance.

for number"strings" i use some black or brown searing elastic with loops tied on the ends so they can loop over jacket buttons, one tight over the button so it stays on the jacket when you take it off, it doesnt get lost then.

Ooooooo didnt think about that, i always do a knott then cant undo it and waste the elastic!!! I can be dim though!!!!!!!!

what do you think to the number clips? Definitely no. IMO they are clumsy looking. Shearing elastic, plaiting thread or a matching bootlace together with a rounded number produces a neat appearance.

Always make sure your jacket is the correct length! I usually have to get our adjusted when we buy them as they are too long - nothing worse than sitting on the back of the jacket when doing rising trot!
