what do people think about grey beaglers? Speaking from a spectator's point of view - I think grey beaglers look very smart for in-hand classes, especially if worn with grey/beige jacket. Perhaps those who show Arabs/Sec.D's in-hand and wear a waistcoat, a grey beagler would look workmanlike.

what about riding a hunter? Do you mean 'faded' - I've always thought Jayne Webbers to be faded brown, or do you mean genuinely grey? If grey, then what colour jacket would you wear? I shouldn't think it would go with brown tweed.

I think faded beagler look good but only with darker tweeds( like old traditional tweeds) or blue jackets,
Dont think it will go with your brighter tweed and not a massive fan of grey tweeds so i would stick to normal blue if i was you and let it fade out with wear!! x

WHAT ABOUT A SECTION D VETERAN?

|
|
Post by superwoman on Nov 9, 2008 19:03:46 GMT
hi commet4eva as you no my daughter does the veteran we ask that question to even though we dont have a sec d i think that in veteran classes we should be in plain every thing and stand out a little eg tie and a nice tie pin. the judges should be looking at how well the pony/horse looks and moves to say that they are supposed to be veterans!!!

We have show cobs and I always wear a navy beagler - coz its the only one I have! But my mum has a brown and a grey one. They help because when your in a class of 30 on one of 25 bay cobs she is always known as the lady in the brown hat makes her and the horse easier to pick out! If you put yourself in the judges position you can see why!!

From a Judge's point of view, yes, hats can help to 'earmark' those you wish to remember.
e.g. Carol Bardo/Jane Webber exhibits.

regarding hats you should also remove the tails of the bow at the back or sew under so that they are not loose. I was told this when i was 6yrs old in my very first show!!! However, the judge also said that if my father was farmer i was allowed to leave them down......! Well, my father is a farmer but i was too scared to tell her that then. I happen to still sew up my tails as i dont really know if the 'farmer' thing is true? maybe it was something to do with hunting etiquette i suppose? Who knows....?

Yes, this is what I have always believed: hunting farmers and their family may keep the tails on the caps down. Perhaps it helps the Hunt Secretary when he/she is collecting 'caps', as there used to be a time when the local farming folk who allowed hounds on their land could hunt for free. Bit different these days, I believe!

what do people think loooks best - black elastic or jodhpur clips?
|
|
|
Post by ponymum on Dec 8, 2008 21:18:00 GMT
Dont know about which looks best, but the elastic doesnt ping when your jockey is doing there show!!!! JoDdy clips always seem to do so, and then you lose one and always end up with odd numbers of them

Definitely black elastic - just a pain when the kids outgrow thr jodhpurs & you have to unpick them & sew them on the next pair!

I know this sounds surreal, but do you sew the elastic in yourself or get it professionally done, as I am not sure I could do a job neat enough foe the show ring - you are apeaking to someone who has never sewn a button on or a hem up (use wunda web), and the only sewing I have ever done is sewing plaits in !!!!!

I'm a complete showing novice and very confused!! Currently I have a navy show jacket (which I think is correct as I'm female and mainly do veteran classes). However, I also have a cob to show - do I need to buy a tweed jacket or can I use my navy one? With regards to boots - when are 'garter straps' or whatever they're called used? Also, do I need a black or brown show cane (tack is dark brown on both horses)? Does it need to match my tack or my boots? What colour gloves do I need? Also, the veteran can't be ridden without a numnah - what colour would I be best to use?
ARGH - so many questions!! Help??

Not sure about the veteran but for a cob you should defo wear tweed. Garter straps are traditional but less and less people wear them now because of the dressage cut boots. I am having garter straps put on my boots. Match everything else to the tweed in your jacket. I have brown gloves and cane but thats because I ride side saddle and black should never be worn aside figured it cant be that different for astride! dont think there is a hard and fast rule with that but I am happy to stand corrected! Main thing to remember in cob classes is that everything should be toned down and natural looking so no cut away jackets or pretty ponies ties that are all blinged up! That said collar and tie is correct not stock! Numnahs are fine just keep it discreet make sure it fits neatly under your saddle and doesnt end up hanging out of the back.

Well for veterans I would say dress appropriately for the type of pony, e.g. navy on a show pony, tweed on a M&M, etc. For a cob I would say long boots, cream or beige jods/breeches, plainish tweed jacket, shirt and tie in a subtle colour. Gloves and cane should always be brown regardless. Garter straps should be on straight topped boots, but a lot of people wear the dressage boots without straps, either is OK. Numnahs, would agree with hottoddy, just discreet in a colour which matches the horse and not a lot larger than the saddle.

What is normal in part bred arab classes ? Do you wear blue jackets, or if your horse is a SH then can you wear a tweed-this is a class that we will be new to in 2009 and have not really watched any prior to this. Thanks.

So am I correct in thinking that brown gloves and cane even with a navy jacket then? Think I might get someone else to show the cob - can't afford a new jacket!! This showing business is soooo confusing. Even at small local level!! If it wasn't for the age of the horse I'd stick with showjumping

Maudie this is only my opinion, but wear what he would have worn before, I much prefer to see a traditional turnout than the short jackets/loud checks/dressage boots that seem to be the trend at the moment. Have a look at some of the photographers websites to get some ideas. There's a link on one of the olympia threads that has really good photos taken by a HG member.

I agree with Milliesmum Traditional is best certainly in the cobs and hunters that I do you never see a producer in dressage boots or loud check! I did buy some dressage boots though becase they were cheaper and got a saddler to cut the top off!! CHeats way but worked for a short term fix! Also I am sure it is different for a welsh cob as the societys have different rules but in the hunters and cobs men should really wear bowlers!! There is always loads of second hand jackets for sale on internet I love ebay!

I think that if the pony is good enough it will shine no matter what the rider wears, but I'm afraid I'm strictly old school, less is more. And as you say, it should be the pony getting judged, so you want the eye to be drawn there, and not to the rider.

Dont pick on 'dressage boots' its all some of us can wear! I cant use other types of boots because they slip down even with garter straps. I dont think i look half bad, please feel free to pull me to pieces though.....!
