Mine has to be when people judge you! We don't have the top class gear, but everything that i do own does the job and looks pretty d**n good. Because it doesn't have the label you're suddenly not as good as other people!! I hate it when judges..well..judge? I've told a judge that my pony was 4 years old and her reply was "Oh yes, so am i" This has happened on two occasions and I've been moved from first down to last because of this. My show was perfect (no wrong legs etc) the other horses were off the bit or wrong legged it. I find it so infuriating! It's such a shame that showing has so many flaws to it, like who you are and who you know because i enjoy it so much.

Dressage boots instead of traditional long boots with a garter strap, especially on short tubby legs

Pollister I agree you should be judged on how you and your horse go on that day, not on what you or your horse did last time out.............Ihave had people approach me after a class 'demanding' to know why they have not won the classs I just judged 'as they have always won it before' well sorry butthis time you weren't good enough!
I'm not bothered if you don't have the labels or latest gear, all I ask is the horse and rider are turned out neatly and correctly for that class..........nothing else matters to me, I judge on what is before me at the time not on past results, who bred what, who rode what, not interested in that!
When I was very little and started showing my pony my grandad told me some words I have never forgotten 'when the red rosette starts to be the be all and end all, then walk away' something I passed on to my daughter when she started showing horses, taught to be gracious in winning and smile if defeated..................and if you have to have a rant then have a rant back at your trailer/lorry or in the privacy of your own home

Well from the other side of the fence, can I say what irritates me as a judge................yes riders cutting other riders up, I do take note of the transgressions and will punish if I have to! HALLELUJAH!!!!!! ;D

Merrymoo, one of my friends had her horse doped nearly to death while at a National Champnship, poor thing had so much in her system the vet honestly didn't think she would pull through but she did, then later going home from same show, both back wheels suddenly came off her lorry...........checking it afterwards three mechanics (2 police and one independent) came to the same conclusion, both sets of wheel nuts had been tampered with, they know who most probably did it, but sadly haven't got any positive proof that she did. The person suspected of it was heard lamenting the fact that friend and her horse were unhurt

well off to first showing show of the year on Sunday. Will be doing trailblazers workers and ridden sport horse. It seems like ages since i last went showing and we have been arena eventing and show jumping over the winter, which i have to say has been really enjoyable, no plaiting, bathing etc and clear cut winners of classes. I will see what irritates me, generally the behaviour of people in the collecting ring!!

well have been out and about today, and was asked to judge due to unexpected absence of a judge, her son was taken to hospital in the wee small hours. So I agreed, lucky for me had something halfway decent on.............so judged the lead rein, most the mums looking like BA stewardesses on a day off, but at least turned out neatly and correctly and no grousing when I picked the final four, little girl who won even said 'thank you' when I gave her the rosette. Then first ridden again without incident and all agreed with the final line up.......so far good day. Then it started the downhill slide...............was judging the M & M class the first two I really couldn't split them so asked them to do one last individual ride that I set............second pony was foot perfect first pony napped on being asked for the transition to trot.........so I reversed the placings, then all hell broke loose when I sent them out of the ring. The child on the pony with second place jumped off and started hitting the poor wee thing with her hands reins anything she had to hand calling it all the names she could think of. I ran over grabbed pony one dad grabbed the rider and then parents appeared.............'oh she gets very upset if she doesn't win and takes it out on her ponies' told them in no uncertain terms I do not want her back in my ring ever again, that she shouldn't be having any ponies, and that they were to blame for making her think that red rosettes are her right to have............found out afterwards RSPCA inspector had witnessed the whole thing and had been to speak to parents, and brat has been banned for rest of the season..............after that we all settled down again and things were slightly better in the afternoon! Hopefully as well RSPCA will be visiting her at home and looking at the rest of the ponies, and hope they all get taken off her.......................when I think of the kids I know who would give their right arms to have a fraction of what this little spoilt brat has I could explode!

Full marks to you Christine & that is possibly the most valuable showing day you will ever have - if only because said brattish child & parents will hopefully learn several very valuable lessons about life. Can't stand bratty children.

Several 'f' words and the horrible 'c' word as well used liberally by said bratl do judges carry a bar of soap with them these days to wash mouths out? I would be mortified if my 2 used such language & my they would face serious consequences (particularly the c word - hate it with a passion) & they're in secondary school - doesn't say much for the parents sadly but then given her general tantrum I guess that gives you sufficient clues I bet she's a nasty little bully at school as well.

Personal opinion - children need to learn the meaning of the word 'no'.
They need to know that there are certain things in life that you just can't have. And certain times when it won't go your way and things won't be the way you want them to be.
We all have to do stuff we don't like and don't want to do, but that's life and children need to know this and learn to deal with it.
Parents who give their children everything they want are doing them no favours.

Never ceases to amaze me how some mothers are dictated to by their children in supermarkets etc - my 2 learned from day 1 that no to a sweet, toy etc meant no & just as quickly learned not to waste their energy asking or whinging.

The world isn't fluffy and lovely all the time, and if we don't teach them to handle disappointment and the general 'knocks' that life hands out, we're not doing our job properly!

People pushing push chairs / prams Into warming up area!!!!!!!!!! Happened twice last year at equifest. Muppets !!!!!!!!!!!! I was once at Cheshire show many years ago when I was only about 10/11 years old. My mum was leading my 12.2 sp down the horse walk as he was rather worked up and upset. A lady with a pram promtly started being very rude and shouting at my mum for allowing my pony to misbehave around people with prams etc.....and yes this all happened in the HORSE walk! The stupidity of some people is amazing!

Well daughter was out yesterday jsut local stuff as one of the horseshasn't set foot in ashowring for the last 5 years so we thought we would take it easy with hinm this year and see how he went........happy to say he has taken to it again like a duck to water. Anyhow her and son in law arrived home totally exhausted from catching other folks ponies that had escaped, she said so many bad mannered horses and ponies and riders as well it was untrue. Horse kicking out in the line up, one woman was actually encouraging her horse to kick out at the horses on either side of her to give her horse a better chance, would have loved to have seen that and sent her out in front of everyone (nasty streak I have when it comes to nasty tricks).Woman in thte trailer parked next to them left her shire youngster unattended and then expressed surprise that he had been kicking off, son in law honestly thought the trailer was going to go over! She wasn;t impressed htat she had been called back to her trailer by worried owners of other horses parked near to her either as she 'was talking to some friends and having a drink with htem and arranging a bbq for another weeknd! They came home with a second place so not too shabby a day really.

I was on a really baby pony at one show, he can be very un predictable. The schedule clearly stated, NO SCOOTERS/BIKES, yet 3 children came whizzing round my pony sending him insane and me nearly falling off onto the concrete, needless to say he didnt calm down at all for his class. I've never seen this rule put into force though, there always seems to be bikes etc at shows where they're not meant to allow them...

HOw about being in a ring when a horde and I mean horde of some 300 racing bikes come whizzing through the middle of the ring and out the other side, that has happened once to me...........had jsut got all the ponies into line and this bloke on his bike came scooting past me then he was followed a few minutes later by the main group..........we all just stood there with open mouths. The ponies and their riders (bless them all) stood perfectly still, no one moved or flinched or took off. We tracked the organiser down a little while later, and asked what the hell he was playing at......his reply was along the lines of 'tough you're going to have to put up with us having our races every month on the same day as you have your riding club, and we will race through the rings'...........we got that stopped and they haven't done it again ........

My 2013 pet hates so far:
Martingale stops on reins in flat classes- why? non-leather covered showcanes- just plain ugly, especially in the hands of children and with the "tat" (crystals) on top. Diamantes/ribbons around top hats for evenings (except concours of course) Make-up on coloureds in HOYS classes Make up on riders- especially the intermediates and the coloureds at PUK winters- no need at all, should be subtle- bot blue eyelids and pink cheeks People complaining about coming 2nd to a wrong leg. It is the beginning of the season, wrong legs on baby ponies aren't too terrible. And many competitors forget that conformation is to be taken into consideration.

People with pushchairs at shows full stop!! I know, I know people have babies and want to go and watch but it just makes me shudder. I was once at a local show (it must have been a good few years back) a horse ditched its rider, ran off and its reins caught onto a pram, the horse continued to bolt across the showground bucking and kicking out. It was the most horrendous thing!
Pet hates: pink tweed, earrings or any other jewelry, people feathering welsh's tails (I'm probably a minority there) scruffy turnout - I know some people aren't as experienced as others at showing but surely you can fasten your top button and stick on a hairnet?? People who think that because their pony's head is stuck to its chest it is clearly in an outline...no, producers who every now and again don't win and you hear 'do you know who I am' (yes I have heard this, I did laugh out loud too!)
I could go on forever!

Sent from my LT26i using proboards This may have been my producer! This happened to us at Equifest. Producer started yelling this from the side of the ring and then he stormed in the ring and had a go at the steward. We pulled our ponies from the yard that very day!

Certtain producers (who shall remain nameless) and they also are panel judges for a few socities, sitting in the bar at a certain venue when they are handed a brown envelope containing a large sum of money.............not long afterward heard arranging with another judge the 'same sort of present' when they are showing the week after..........not saying all producers are like these but looking at them no one would believe it of them as they are held up to be 'some of the best in the country with bery good reputations'...........HA! I know different!

People who PURPOSELY cut you up on the go round right in front of the judge, resulting in your pony throwing it's head, nearly being rammed into the wall & going disunited. But all is well! We still got 2nd & beat said person

The main thing that annoys me is when people cut up kids in the collecting ring, when there parents aren't looking, and then they wind the kids pony up, seriously some people need to grow up, you shouldn't be trying to upset other horses just because your pony isn't going very nicely!!

When people don't go left to left and then give out several funny looks because you are sticking to the correct side and you nearly collide because they won't move over

I love reading some of these things! -People not passing left to left annoys me SO MUCH! I was at a show I while ago doing a worker on my horse, and there was a woman warming up her hunter. It had already chucked her off so I was trying to give her lots of space, I went on the outside like I was meant to, she didn't move off the track at all, I had to pull my horse up and then I apologised even though SHE was wrong, and she rolled her eyes and said 'God' and then went and stood at the edge of the warm up to moan about me!! -Lead rein/first ridden ponies worked in for hours by a adult before the tot gets on. They're meant to be ponies suitable for little kids, aren't they? In fact any ponies that are worked in by someone who isn't competing it annoys me. -People who give ponies a couple of big whacks before they go into the ring, to get it going forward - can't you just school it properly? -Judges who don't give any reason for your placing. I know they have a hard job but if I get moved down when I think I've done well I like to know why. -Make-up. When there are ponies with an entire bottle of baby oil on their coats and eyes like a panda it looks awful. -People who have their hair in a ponytail - It looks so messy! Plaits for little jockeys and a bun for anyone else -People who are too big for their pony, with their stirrups jockey length. Also, riders who are a bit, ahem, on the large side, on dainty show ponies or hacks. -People who don't say thank you. I always smile and say thank you to the judge even when I think I should have done better - at the end of the day it's their descision. -People who walk in a circle around the judge before they pull them in after the go round. It doesn't work - I was on the outside behind about 4/5 people all who were cutting me up, and I still got pulled in ahead of them. -RAIN. -All the waiting around -People who gob ponies in the mouth and/or give them a boot in the ribs when things don't go to plan. Ok, rant over..
