People who appear at the ringside on their mounts after the group canter, and still get let in the ring!! No, if you are that late, tough!

Newest Pet hate- People showing non-native coloured ponies as show ponies when they are either clearly show hunter ponies or in-between types. So many in blue jackets now. I saw a lovely hunter pony at NPS the other day- with a browband and blue jacket on. This can confuse a judge into thinking it's a bad example of a riding pony-type, and hence lowere your conformation mark.

Not really a showing pet hate, but I hate wanted ads for "native ponies" that don't mean native ponies but coloureds!

Hunters and natives cobs and arabs for daytime classes should technically have riders wearing tweed jackets if the ruling were to be strictly enforced personally hate the new short jackets not proper jackets at all more like upmarket everyday work jackets.......call me old fashioned but correct turn out is something I insist on . Yes the advert thing as well, if its a coloured pony then have the grace tosay its a coloured not a 'native' rnat over

And the corollary to that is the use of "colour" to mean dilute, as in "will breed colour" used for breeding stock. Or is it only Welsh breeders (well, some of them, not me, I'm far too much of a stickler for accurate speaking) that do use that?

Best Turnout at local shows is a really good place to start a youngster off, but the number I've judged with tack which doesn't fit properly, filthy tack, coloured numnahs, martingales,m&m ponies who've not had their manes/tails brushed through, grass stains, plaits with rubber bands....the list is endless!!! :-( If you're going to go in this class, at least apply some effort...PLEASE!!! :-) :-)

My current moan. judges who ask for a very specific show then dont mark accordingly. They put up riders who dont do the exact show and leave others who have followed their instructions exactly, down the line. PS Some judges ask for stupid shows when they have room for super shows if they just thought about it

After this weekend, it's other competitors' relations whingeing about the judging, the classes, which classes are in which section championships and 'how can you possibly pick between the winner of that class and the other class'. One woman kept homing in on me telling me 'well we know that's going to win cos it's owned by the secretary' or 'they're connected to the show, that's why they won' !!!! Seriously, showing is supposed to be fun! if it makes you so bitter towards other competitors, maybe you should find another hobby!!! :/

Judges who can't stop checking their phones in the ring . Leave the bl**dy thing alone and concentrate on the people who have paid good money for your attention . We had one the other week who was so bad that I was sorely tempted to get my own phone out and start studying it whilst I was standing my pony up for her .Unfortunately/fortunately I never take mine into the ring .GRRRRRR !!!

Don't have many pet hates! But my biggest one, is mountain and moorland classes, now I know it's rider any age, but surely a big boned, busty woman, should not be riding sec as, and Bs, and dartys! Just because it's rider any age! It should still be rider correct height, weight. For size of pony they ride! Also my other pet hate, are show grounds that don't provide adequate working in areas! I'm a nervous, disabled rider, who regularly lunges my not so easy show horses, for 10 to 15 mins, untacked, just to settle them down, get the itch out of feet etc! Yet I have been treated badly by some show organisers, for lunging my horses! Like I said, I'm nervous and frail, as I'm semi parylised, after a very nasty fall, at a show! So please show organisers, make sure there is somewhere where us mere mortals, who really don't like doing a show ground rodeo display, go off and lunge our horses, in a quite corner somewhere! If I do lunge in an area where it's cramped, I try to squeeze into a corner out the way, and take up as little space as possible!

I feel showing lost it's fun a loooooong long time ago! Not going to lie , I LOVE the competitiveness, and the determination - it's sometimes what brings your inner superstar rider-self out! But when people moan on about 'oh she knows the judge' 'oh that judge can't even judge' 'oh she's a rosette stealer' it seriously gets annoying after a while. You just want to rattle them and tell them to shaaaataapp!!!!!!! I love doing showing on my 2, but somedays i admit i get annoyed with other people... but i don't boast about it, or say it to other competitors on the showgrounds! It's a waste of your breath, when all you can simply do is congratulate them

Ditto this! No-one HAS to show. If you (not just aimed at the above person - anyone) don't enjoy it, then don't do it. There are plenty of other disciplines out there and on top of that, just because you own a horse, you don't HAVE to compete. There's nothing wrong with being a happy hacker or choosing to do farm rides/fun rides and hunt. The way I see it is that you are the one that has to take the horse home with you after any competition/outing. What therefore matters more than how much a judge likes (or doesn't like) him/her and rosettes or trophies is that you love your horse. You spend more time looking after them than doing anything else so if you don't love your horse, or even like him or her, then you really need to reassess what you are doing. No, no-one has to show... but this thread is about pet hates and irritating experiences and therefore is a place for people to vent... unfortunately showing is the discipline that has the most 'pet hates' as it is unfortunately full of poor showmanship, unfair judging and cheating theses days... however as much as I, alongside others, enjoy showing as a general rule, but whether at high or local level you expect your entry fee money to be as good as anyone elses... And not everyone wants to be just a 'happy hacker'. or wants to start a new discipline! Everyone can have a moan and gripe from time to time, hence the creation of this thread.
edited to add before i get shot down, not everyone has poor showmanship or cheats, and not every judge is unfair! It is still mainly filled with good showmanship and fair people as well as fantastic judges!!

Pushchairs. They should be banned IMO. I have three children - Get a sling. Not a baby carrier from argos, a proper sling. I carry mine in a front hold facing me (he is 14 months) but for older/larger babies you can get a wrap type sling and secure them in a sort of piggyback position. I know women who do this up to the age of 3.

I wouldn't have managed without my pushchair but at least now she's 3 she rides the ponies at shows now. Far more civilised I hope!!!!!

In agreement!! I have two girls under 4 so a pushchair was essential, & still is for my youngest! One is now on the pony, but general public were probably safer when she was in the pushchair too!! Haha!!

Certainly pushchairs should be banned from dedicated horsewalks though.

One thing that I find quite depressing (and it's mostly in showjumping rather than showing) is the disregard for stallions. The stallion I ride is an extra-ordinarily well mannered boy but I find that I always have horses coming very close to me with their riders asking me what the white ribbon in the tail and bridle plates mean? I hate having to tell people to "just mind him, he is a stallion" anyway, but it makes it so much worse when they're sticking their mares under his nose. Bless him, he does do so well and always keeps his focus but I don't want him to get kicked because an in season mare takes offence to his presence. (And we all know who would be blamed for that anyway )

(And we all know who would be blamed for that anyway ) I agree with this and think that people should give every horse enough space regardless of gender. Any horse can react out of character and kick out. However, to throw it on it's head, some people taking stallions out expect special treatment or openly put others at risk. I've seen people with stallions completely blocking ring entrances/exits/horse walks then getting shirty that you pass too near to them. I've also seen people working in stallions in a collecting ring and then demanding that no-one can join them. With no other collecting ring available, what is everyone else meant to do?!? Whether entire or not, if your horse is not trusted to be in close proximity to others then it should not be taken out in public imo. Sent from my GT-I9195 using proboards

Don't ban pushchairs as then there would be even more toddlers running around really close to ponies in the collecting ring . Me and another lady got called snooty at Herts county for asking someone to get hold of their toddlers as letting them wander around the collecting ring almost under our ponies feet is not a good idea . I think it's sometimes worse when we take our Shetland as she is a kid magnet but can be on her toes at a bigger show .

Wilkies. Riders that pull their horse's head in either by the "haul" method or the "see saw" action and look around smugly declaring "my horse is on the bit". Double trouble, wilkies AND riders pulling heads in. Riders that go on forums asking for advice on a bit to solve a schooling issue.

Prams in horse walks! Was at Cheshire show on Tuesday and my mare was having a "moment" whilst making our way to our collecting ring. Someone in their infinite wisdom and parked a child in a pram in the horse walk and started shouting at me to mind the pram when my mares was running backwards..... well I'm sorry but the horse walk is for horses not prams! She then proceeded to give me a very nasty look. I would have been mortified if my mare had stood on the pram but something had upset her and she wouldn't walk forwards. Why do people think big shows like Cheshire go to all the trouble to have separate horse and pedestrian areas?

Swales bits on horses in the show ring! People with white/pink/multicoloured numnahs, incorrect tack - Do your homework! And totally agree about the people that leave the ring and stand in the entrance so you can't get out.. then give you funny looks when you politely ask them to move!!
