as i have said before if we had people working for a living wage in this country and not a pittence of a minimum wage we would have no need for tax credits at all would we the government should have the balls to increase the minimum wage so people can work without benefits and feel better off working than on the dole ,the benefits arnt to high for those who take only what they should from the sysytem its the wages offered that are too low and the fraudsters that need sorting

Well just heard on the news that the government borrowing has gone up this may compared to last may by 2.5 billion pounds due to decreased tax revenue and increased benefit payments do you think that might have something to do with the million more people out of work due to this governments policies

Well just heard on the news that the government borrowing has gone up this may compared to last may by 2.5 billion pounds due to decreased tax revenue and increased benefit payments do you think that might have something to do with the million more people out of work due to this governments policies They need to start plugging all these so-called loopholes in the tax system that all the mega wealthy are using. They are only using them because they are legal. Make em illegal, and tax revenue would increase. And the Govt. (all parties actually) are very hypocritical to criticise certain celebrities who are avoiding tax. I estimate that 100% of politicians are also avoiding tax. The Daily Telegraph investigation proved this. Lots of them employ a spouse on a nominal salary, to spread their tax liability. Plenty of them channel income into offshore companies, and pay themselves dividends. I would be surprised if ANY politician pays their full tax liability, based on their standard take home pay. All of them use loopholes too. My husband paid WAY too much tax last year, as he started a new job part way through the year, and despite completing all appropriate forms, he was emergency taxed from Oct 2011 to March 2012. You need to be a fully paid up accountant to fathom the convoluted system to get it back. I must say I do not know how to get it back, and I consider myself pretty well up on these matters

Bloomin good job we did not join the Euro back in 2000...... Oh well, nice cheap holiday for me this year, with the favourable exchange rate. We picked a good year to go to Spain. Been saving up for 3yrs for this!! ;D

Passing judgment, you are not untraceable!! AND? I receive working tax credits and i own a horse, because i work! Where is the issue with that?! So trace away! Tell me, as i asked earlier, how many people with horses get tax credits and child benefit as i do? Don't be shy, sageandonion can't hurt you! I know plenty on and off this site. So what is your issue? It is my money i get it for WORKING and i feed my horse with it, others use it for holidays, clothes, running nice cars, days out, etc. I use it for my horse and live a minimal lifestyle. And??

My dad worked for 35 years without a break, paid thousands in tax earning £2000 a week sometimes and paying most of it out in tax only to fall ill with cancer and not get a single penny back to help him live whilst he died..... SICK SICK country we live in sometimes, they just argued the point everytime he tried to claim yet someone we know sits in a cushty house with 2 kids, everything paid for and plenty to live on every month to keep a pretty nice life with every technical device going.....

Tax credits haven't been around for that long in the grand scheme of things - around 12 years at most? I don't get tax credits but I do get child benefit. If you don't fill in the firms you don't get child benefit so there are parents out there who don't.
My husband worked for 36 years self employed paid all his taxes etc and when he was ill he wasn't entitled to sick pay, he wasn't entitled to JSA when he couldn't find work. How can someone who has never had a job and has no intention of ever getting a job be entitled to money hard earnt by others?

To be fair, if you chose not to complete the child benefit forms, you can't complain. Its essentially a universal benefit, and when I had my son they gave you the form in the paperwork when they sent you home. I had a child benefit form in my hand before I had a birth certificate to prove he existed! That was 2002, it may be different now. I don't think anyone can begrudge child benefit, it is so universal. My son's pays for his riding lessons at the moment.

The problem with a lot of people who claim benefits is as the OP said... its not worth them working as they wouldnt have as much money if they did.. I know a few like this and they have their 5 horses, their luxury items etc etc.. it makes my blood boil....
there are jobs out there, yes probably not the ones people would want to do, but hey, if your skint, you will do anything to earn a buck....
However, where is their pride... go carry on claiming and sponging of the governemnt and tax payers... I will continue to be broke, unable to have my horses produced, unable to buy the "good" red wine, drive around in a battered 4x4, but I can hold my head up high and have self worth and some resemblance of dignity...

I earn £110 a week, I put £50 of diesel a week in my truck to get me to work, due to my location any job will involve travel and therefore fuel costs. To be honest it really isn't worth me working for £60 a week, but would I go on benefits? No I wouldn't as I have my pride and it wouldn't sit easy with me knowing that my lifestyle was being funded by the hard working amongst us. There are jobs out there for those that want to work, they may not be the ideal job but they will provide a wage

Wow, seems I have opened up quite a debate!
Trouble is, we live in a throw away society, where any form of self respect or dignity is long gone in certain circles, if somethings broke get a new one and you can claim compensation for any minor incident. Blame everyone else for the troubles in the world and having responsibility is something else's thing. There is no longer the strong work ethic there was even when I was a child(30 years ago-ish). Long gone are the days when if you wanted something you saved up for it, now you get it and think about paying afterwards. Pay day loans, cash loans, pawnbroking shops, loans for this that and the other, preying on those that can't afford it. A couple of generations ago this would have been a total no-no.
Am I right in thinking a few years ago child benefit only applied to the first child? Quite a few years back I think. Not a bad idea in this day and age to prevent families having 6 or 7 kids!! I am in favour of child benefit being means tested or just for lower incomes, I am lucky that I don't necessarily need mine and would be happier if those that don't need it have it taken from them and those that do get an increased payment. £81 doesn't go far when buying shoes for school etc. However its not a bad little earner for someone with 6 kids is it?! Highly unlikely that money would ever see a shoe shop...................sorry maybe a sweeping statement but probably not that far from the truth.
When I was single and in between permanent jobs I temped, took what I could, when I could, hardly ever said no to an assignment, sometimes it cost me half of what I earned to get there but I did it for my own peace of mind and actually learned a hell of a lot from temping. Many people shy away from it as it means signing off as it is only temporary but what they don't 'get' is that it can and does lead to permanent jobs and working for an agency can be very rewarding. I was a bit of a girly swat and did all that was asked of me, ended up with a career in recruitment and HR.
I think this govt are d**ned if they and d**ned if they don't with a lot of policies as they are, after all, picking up the pieces left by labour and its not an overnight thing. I'm not defending them but I know I wouldn't like their job. Half the cabinet ministers don't know their arse from their elbow and have no idea about the area of expertise they are in and they create masses of spin about things they are clueless about. Its like us trusting our farrier to suddenly go into a hospital and perform a triple heart bypass!!
I have nothing against anyone claiming what they are due for their own genuine reasons. What galls me is those that shirk, know every trick in the book to claim more and get away with it.
Horsegossip members for the cabinet is what I say ;D ;D Real people with ideas of how things should work.

It would certainly help if someone knew what they were doing I know many on here will disagree and have swallowed the spin about the labour leaving things in a mess but Gordon Brown was one of THE most respected economist in the world and as prime minister was very well respected internationally never at home because he wasnt a "Pretty Boy" oxbridge graduate. Maybe what the country needs are proper economists who understand what the implications of their policies are and not the blame who ever happened to be the person last holding the hot potato created and cooked up by the world banking crisis. And of course the American mortgage problem of lending money when the people they were lending to had no money to pay it back the housing crash world wide and the International monetary fiasco that is now the Euro. We are all about to pay for that one too. Not saying he last government was right and it should have had the foresight to anticipate that at some point the economic upturn would result in a crash if the world economy led its downfall but bearing in mind they did pay off all the war debts and restitution funding debts that ran into billions while the going was good pity they spoiled it all by then running up more debts when the world economy crashed. If people hadnt become so selfish and self centered no one would mind having to support those in need and as far as I can gather no one has answered my point about are we now so selfish we would allow children to starve because their irresponsible parents are dole scroungers it isnt their fault they didnt ask to be born Once here they should be given a chance to succeed grow and be educated in the vain hope of making thing better not condemned to another generation of "wasters" working the system. Getting the lazy out to work only works if there is work for them to do and if they are encouraged to do it. I used to employ a group of youngsters that came from the type of never worked in three generation background every one of them is now at young adults in their late 20s early 30s now has full time work and families they are supporting. Probably with the aid of tax breaks but they are all employed. One has a great job works hard and has three kids he is the first person in his family to work for 4 generations non of his older relatives uncles aunts etc have ever worked. Many of the people on benefits are not able to work because they are unemployable they dont know how to work dont know how to get out and to work and some do not have the education they need to do even the menial tasks. The real scroungers are very clever and know exactly how to work the system but there are not that many of them and they account for a far smaller percentage than the wealthy tax dodgers and money squirrels that are effectively stealing our money.

Cayo - £96 a week is the statutory wage for a young person aged 16-18 on an Apprenticeship. It has been that way for a long time. It was around £90 when I left school 10yrs ago. It goes up a bit in the 19-24 age category. The minimum wage does not apply to Apprenticeships, unless you are over the age of 24. I am sure people on here who are employers would agree with me - if Min. wage DID apply to Apprencticeships, then there would be no Apprenticeships. Employers cannot afford to pay Min. wage for Apprentices and allow time off to go to college etc. I understand £96 a week isn't a lot of money, but it is not designed to be a living wage. How many A-Level students live away from their parents? Hardly any. So the idea is for Apprentices to do the same - stay with their parents until they are 18. The wage is not supposed to support housing, shopping etc. It simply cannot be afforded. Apprentices know what the wage is before they sign up to the 2yr course, so why so many drop out, citing lack of money, I don't know. It is clearly advertised in every College prospectus I have ever seen, and it is pointed out when they come in for interview - I know, as I have been involved with those interviews. My step-dad (now 64) trained as an Apprentice Mechanical Engineer back in the 1960s. He was paid, equivalently, a lot less, and the duration of the Apprenticeship was 6 years. He has always had good, well paid work available to him as a consequence of his training, but you have to stomach the first few years of low pay and tough graft. That's the bit a lot of young people cannot seem to grasp - you WILL have to make the tea, you WILL have to sweep the floor, you WILL have to go to the butty van etc. Its part of being the junior member of staff in ANY job, not just in construction, or engineering. I have been the tea-maker and butty-van gopher in my early jobs, and they were what you would call "graduate" jobs. Its part and parcel of The System of Life. You start at the bottom, you work your way up, and in 10 years time, you sit on the Important Chair and ask for a ham salad butty for your lunch...... I am aware of all that you say but my point is what do the kids do who have not got the support of parents or family .

I know of a middle aged lady made redundant about three months ago from a small company where she was paid a good wage. Unfortunately she has no qualifications and little transferable skills. She has had probably six offers of interviews, all of which she has declined as being more than 10 minutes driving and the rest because they are not enough money. She receives job seekers allowance but also gets the full rent of her little house paid for via housing benefit.
So, in her case, because of the benefits she is receiving, she feels it isn't worth her while working unless she receives a much higher salary which encourages her to bother getting out of bed. She won't get the higher salary because she doesn't at present merit it.
This appears to be the case with a lot of work capable people.
