SORRY for totally hi jacking thread *blush sheepishly* To get back to the point....learn from the people around you if you need to, take on the chin any ups and downs, know that your doing a great job and a great job will always be recognised. All producers have had to start somewhere...they arent born like it. Enjoy yourselves and just keep on going Dont worry about what you cant control, just strive to go one better next time and just remember, when people start worrying about you......you know you ve arrived

am i right in thinking this is more of a problem with ponies, thatn with professionals/amateurs alike that show say cobs or hunters? There seem to be more and more amateurs and home producers showing cobs these days

when people start worrying about you......you know you ve arrived How very true. If they are criticising you and b*tching about your horse then you are doing something right. If they all want to be your friend...........maybe you need to go back to the drawing board. . Sorry if this sounds bitter - I am only speaking from experience

LR - Lyn Russell I assume. Now there's someone who really did start from nothing. Lyn does not come from a horsey background and she hasn't married into it either, BUT with very hard work and dedication she has reached the pinnacle of her career - producing and showing cobs. I love to watch her in the go-round - so relaxed, none of this 'leg on' stuff, still hands - I could go on. Probably the picture which we see in the ring has only been achieved by a lot of hard schooling at home. Most of her horses come to her from Ireland completely untouched - so there's a lot of work goes into producing them ready for the ring. IMO she is one of those people who deserves to win. She is a very out-spoken lady but I admire her for it - she didn't get where she is today ...... I'll probably get shot down in flames from the cob people now Don't forget there are home-produced classes for nearly every-one these days which the true amateur can enter on a level footing, so to speak.

didnt know Lyn Russel started from nothing, seen all her products in derby house and seen all the pictures. and horses for sale, saw a job going at her yard once...was going to go for it but decided that an office job pays more.
all credit to her for getting where she is now. gives the rest of us abit of hope that it can be done!

Definatly, I have the uttmost respect for Lynn and so often see derogatary comments about her on several forums! She has worked bloody hard to get where she is, and shes very good at what she does. no less than 13 of her current/ex cobs where at HOYS this year, that does tell you something!!
She calls a spade a spade, and rightly so!! At least theres no funny business!!
I have never got dirty looks or rude remarks from her as some claim, always smiles!!

I was told years ago, that Polaris' (obv from lady mentioned above!) first ever time out, he was ridden by somebody who worked for her, pretty much unknown rider, he actually won a large class and qualified somewhere like RIHS ahead of a full line up of professionals/producers. Personally think that just sums up if you have an animal of that caliber you CAN and will beat the pros!

:I have to agree that producers do work extremly hard leastways the genuine ones do but I also think that it is very sad when an amateur wins as they did do in the hunter heavyweights this year and then received very little mention in the H&H for their achievment but I;m sure he people concerned are very happy with thehorse and would have been happy just to compete there whatever he result!!

Lynn did start from nothing- remember going to a 'tack party' when she was a rep. Through hard work and talent she is what she is today and good luck to her.

It is an interesting headline - Producers always win! Actually we know that they can be beaten by home produced ponies if they are good enough.
My question is "Is producing ponies any job for an adult person?" (now I am running for cover!)

I meant producing for the ring - shouldn't children be doing their own ponies? I know children who ride once a week and other than that have no contact at all with the animal. Someone told me they were called "CV Jockeys" - Someone who can write that they competed at hoys or whatever without having any experience of ponies at all. The whole point of ponies in our family is to be out in the fresh air and riding for fun and exercise. We compete and like to do well but the pleasure would be all gone if someone else was doing the work (in case you are wondering, we have had experience of being produced). I think maybe schooling the odd pony is an adult job but running around at shows, riding ponies for children to get on to win a piece of ribbon and generally giving children nothing to work towards is not a good thing. Perhaps if the ponies we bred for temprement rather than anything else, we would have a more balanced approach? Sorry just me being a grumpy old woman but some of the pleasure is going by what I can see and what I have read on horsegossip.

o... i get you now. i was thinking you might of meant breaking. i dont agree with adults working in the ponies for kids. as its the kid that is riding in the ring not the adult. ponies should be fun for kids. i remeber when i was little jumping on the pony in the field and messing around. riding bareback and helping bring the sheep up from the bottom of the field.
was all fun.

I dont think her being short in staff is anything personal to her, most employers go through a patch at some point of not having enough staff :S
Sounds a bit like poor losers here to anyone who has ever come behind her, don't think you can really comment on her being a sour loser..

i think this is getting a bit personal now ...please can we discuss producers in general

Post by bundle on Oct 26, 2008 8:38:14 GMT
Let's face it, Producers have all day to do things that we amateurs need to fit in around a job. They should be able to get better results with nothing much else to think about! I catch the 6.55 to London each day and come home at 6.30 - my attitude is very professional but I don't have the same amount of time. I am still up for giving them a run for their money and if you have the right horse, it can be done. Well we are still trying anyway!

from reading the comments on LR,i have to say that in all the times that i have seen her this yr,she has never once broken a smile! im a very happy go lucky person, tend to chat to all random peeps whoever they may be,and am always happy for anyones placing as long as they have tried their best - but at the royal this yr (me myself being totally home produced) she walked past putting on a show like she does - i was walking down to the ring with my ned who is unbeaten this season and truely gorgeous, she looked at me -i smiled at her and said good morning like i do - she looked at me in pure disgust and turned to the guy with her and said 'what on earth is a person like that doing on the end of sometime as gud as that' so im very sorry if i offend u miss LR but ive worked I disagree off this past yr to get my chap the way he is - seems tho i bought him as a complete sack of bones for peanuts -he of which has been reserve in the cuddy not only once but THREE times- yes he should have qualified but thats not the point,im 21 yrs old and i produce him to the best of my ability,of which i think i dont do half a bad job at it! so no im sorry for the rant but in my eyes she doesnt get any rating watsoever!!!! ahhhhh! lol xx

I have been on and off the showing circuit now for quite a number of years and have met a lot of producers and had their advice taken on board. I have always found them very approachable especially 'The Hollings' and others and find that they do a fine job but this is full time and us working people make our money other ways and do this as a sideline and is supposed to be pleasure. If all you're moaning about is the way someone looks at you then i think it time to give it up. Remember we pay alot to do this and it is again supposed to be pleasurable..!! I'm proud to be an amateur...
