Does anyone feel the same way or have a similar quandary. OK, so the ponies ride in times are 5am. the class is about 2.30pm and our stables are not free until 5pm. The stable was booked for the day of the class in order to let them have breakfast after their ride in, let them chill out a bit and also get them ready before the class. Also we wanted to stay up Friday night to watch the evening performance etc etc and travel the ponies home the next day. However, unless 2 days stabling are booked, the ponies are either left on the lorry for 9 hours or tied up to the lorry in the cold - great for show ponies As it is, 1 days stabling is £65 and that is not even 24 hours. As you all know it costs enough to get your pony qualified for HOYS with all the classes and running around to shows in the year dodging facey judges It seems that HOYS want you to book 2 days stabling and have made it impossible to book just one day. Without us there would be no HOYS apart from the rich and famous show jumpers. I suggest we all complain, or does anyone else feel differently. OK, sounded off and got it off my chest... see you all there with 2 unhappy cold ponies....

We have slight other problem in that our class will finish around 2.30pm so will need to vacate stable really by time class is finishing instead of being able to let horse chill off and eat before we leave. I was tempted to pay for two nights but OH nearly fainted at that proposal!

I personally enjoy the chase of the qualifiers but agree with you re the stabling, due to the reasons you mentioned i have paid for 2 nights stabling each time - £130!! - could get 2 months livery stable rent for that!

Yes but why are we stupid enough to pay/subsidise the showjumpers?
And don't you think that £85 + 65 +/another 65+cost of qualifying, +diesel to get their etc is rather a lot for a rossie worth £7.50, even if its quite smart. If you go to the office and speak nicely to them you can buy another rossie for the owner/jockey so with the right contacts perhaps it would be possible to acquire said rossie without even turning up.
Think how many you could get for £200, ohh forgot the cost of the photos and the video, but there again surely a pro worth their salt could do you up a nice DVD for a reasonable price from clips throughout the year ;D.

By next year we shall have our stables finished we plan to keep 10 empty for people who want overnight acomadation in this area, we are 45mins from the NEC, will have electric hook up, 30mtr x 50mtr school, so next year come and stay with us.

well no offence ment but im sure there are lots of people who didnt qualify that would love your ticket if its really that much of a rip off . to go to hoys is suposed to be an honour pehaps if you add up what money you spent tying to qualify you would see that its not really such a big deal after all .
the costs of providing stableing at hoys will be higher than most shows as there is no permenant stableing , the vacination legislation is tougher so there has to be a vet on the gate at all times and i should imagine the NEC charges the show organisers slightly more than say malvern would . i wanted to enter a home produced class i qualifed for at puk last year but to join and register the pony plus the entry fee was £80 before i even considered stabling .

I know a lot of people would give their right arm for the tickets with their ponies, and we are not moaning as we qualified 3 this year. The main gripe is that the stables are not available till 5pm so the ponies will be standing around from 5am (work in time) I am sure they used to free the stables up at 12 noon - so yet again another ploy to make us pay for 2 days..

Why do you do it?!? It must be something of a compulsive disorder. From what I read, people chase round the country at enormous expense to shows to qualify to pay enormous amounts to ride at another expensive show. In the meantime, complain about cheating, doping, facey judges, overheight ponies, etc., etc. I don't get it at all.

I do agree about the stabling, and of course it is done for the said reason, X2 Money. But , spare a thought for your Judges when in the Arena. I judged there not too long ago, an honour and a pleasure I agree, but when Grandstand Media write inviting you to Judge, it it very clearly stated you will receive No expenses of any kind, or for transport/fuel. You do get a lunch pass. I can only describe the room its held in as morbid, and the meal Gross!!

Oh dear oh dear - Please stop wingeing. Sageandonion is quite, absolutely right - WHY DO YOU DO IT??
We do it/have done it either :- because we love it/bcause our clients wish us to do it (but, we have to love it in order to deliver for them, anyway)/for our children/ for the child in us which is reliving the dream via our poor children/because it's addictive/ etc etc.
Buy the two night's stable and allow your animals to settle in to the concrete jungle. Allow your kids to get used to it, too. Enjoy. It's a long, cold winter ahead.
As for the judges side of things; that is so right, too. Not what it's cracked up to be. And, the same goes for the Stewards, too.
But please stop winging!!! Think of those who's dream is to have a pony, or those who have a magic HOYS SEAT Ticket purchased for them and leave with one of those HOYS the horse things under their arm. And dream of one day riding their riding school dobbin at the local gymkhana.
Put things in perspective. Lecture over!!

Well said Worntheshirt- there are some lovely horses and ponies this year who for various reasons are not qualified for HOYS. It will always be a golden ticket and I for one cannot think of a single thing I would complain about if I had one.

we havent once moaned about the £85 entry fee, the cost and dedication to get the ponies to HOYS, simply that HOYS are making it impossible for you to only book 1 night of stabling. When you have 3 ponies going, that would be nearly £400 which I think you agree is a lot of money to find and the owners will not pay it. Who does have that sort of money readily available - no one I should think who has ponies and horses unless your a top producer with lovely wealthy clients.
Dont think for one minute we are moaning about going to HOYS as we know how fortunate we are to have qualified 3. Just having a moan about the methods HOYS are using to make more money, so lets keep this thread in perpesctive.
And why do we do it... well that is the eternal question

Well I don't know why you do it and cannot see the attraction, but if it is your dream and you have already spent a crazy amount of money (don't suppose anyone dares to add it up) then it the great scheme of things what is another few bob as they say.
Have the two nights stabling and say "that's it, too expensive, it's a ripoff, not doing it again"

we do it for one reason - the kids that ride... but our pockets are not endless unfortunately... Still, may well wear my finest mini skirt and kiki boots and chat up the stable manager... watch this space

I'm all for people rebelling & not entering HOYS or chasing tickets because of the cost of 2 nights stabling - that way there'll be less competition for the rest of us trying to qualify next year ;D

I think this thread has got a little harsh particularly as very few people know other people's situations regarding money. I live and compete on my wages as I am sure do others.
