DO YOU THINK THAT THE ROSSETTES HAVE BECOME SOME WHAT CHEAP AND NASTY? WE PAY ALOT OF MONEY, TRAVELLING ETC TO ALL THESE SHOWS AND YES TAKING PART AND WINNING IS THE MAIN REWARD BUT A DECENT ROSSETTE TO TAKE HOME WOULD BE NICE (MOAN OVER)

County show has standard rosettes as you get prize money, could have posh ones and no prize money ??

that is understandable, and prize money is much prefered but often prize money depends on how many are entered, rossettes are regularly "naf" no matter how many are entered! In children's classes especailly, rossettes are more important than money, and they should be things to be proud of! Is proper ribbon and long tails too much to ask?

The ones awarded at the RW are particularly naff, but the kudos that goes along with them makes up for it I suppose.

Yes prize money is depenadant on how many are in the class, but the classes have to pay for themself, in a show budget like ours (county), we have reasonable entry fees £14 In Hand £17 Ridden and £10 Driven) we could add more to those But considering we have qualifications on most classes for societies too, we aim to provide value for money plus a fun day out, ours are 2 tier they are not like some other shows, and our championhsips 3 tier, but we have had a debate, and without adding more money to the budget for them we cant increase the size as it has to be increased accross the board, so for livestock, shires, sheep, dogs, rabbits etc etc, not just one section. I feel we arnt crap, but middle of the road rosettes for this show. Notts derby has much lusher rosettes (thanks pat) but no prize money for classes, saying that at both shows we try to get affiliated rosettes for most classes too.

I think that it does make such a difference if the rosettes are really nice. I'm lucky that my main local (Hallamshire Riding Society) does spectacular 1sts - they really stand out and it's lovely to win them.
I do think that if you get prize money as well though then maybe it's not quite fair to expect super nice rosettes as well.

Yes, prize money is good, but do you really think that little kids want money & a tiny rosette? My little sister was so happy when she got 3rd at a local show in Pony With The Prettiest Face. The rosette was lovely. At a different show, in the same class, she got 2nd & the rosette was tiny, 2 tiers & really cheap ribbon. She said "That's a bit rubbish..." I was rather disappointed at a show I went to a while ago, classes were running hours late & the rosettes were, literally, the size of a door knob! & the entry fees were £15 per class! Prestige Equine Events have stunning rosettes, & classes aren't too expensive.

WOW this is a sore nerve for me... when I used to organise shows my first was when I was 9 years old,, other played houses.. remember. In the 50's they were single tiered Knights of Bristol rosettes, I hated them, we did get a 2 5/8th made larger center, and the shows were held twice a year, and the rosettes drew the entries in, These shows were the Silverlands Riding School shows.
later a new company started Prestfield fabrics and they listened to me, and made my rosettes bigger and bigger for years, this was our success, plus we went to 10th place, two tiered, shows were packed, everyone loved them, panel judges andmasses of classes, A special tent for judges lunches 5* plus...ha ha,, start as you mean to go on, proceeds from the shows was little a entry fees were kept low, and I spent the money on the rosettes and new ways to give back to the exhibitor for coming, reward!!!! we still made a profit for local charities and pony club. Shows gave the exhibitors fab rosettes, sashes, and rosettes best yearling best male best female best turned out Whip etc... I I enjoyed every minute. Other shows saw the response and copied, so I had decent shows to go to... Rosettes cost a £1 you still make money out of your shows and expenses too for judges, and if you can't, rethink whats wrong..with the schedule. Rosettes are still the only thing we go for well the money dosent do much the amount they give is an insult really.
name and shame the shows with crap rosettes...

It's also very embarrissing for us Judges to give out rubbish rosettes and I say something if they are mean with the amount and the quality, come on fellow judges, speak out... No exhibitors = no one to judge?

Probably the wrong forum for me to get into seeing as i set up making rosettes as we were sick of winning crap / cheaply made ones lol. The final straw was winning one that had a coffee stain on the back? Our main purpose was to offer good quality made rosettes using the best ribbons we can. We do not use the cheaper acetate ribbons and do not send out anything that we wouldn't want to win ourselves. We have a range of fancy rosettes that do not 'break the bank', all rosettes are double backed so they are not flimsy and we are proud to have a good client base from Pony clubs / riding clubs/ agricultural shows and British Eventing / PUK / NCPA organisers. But we can't choose what rosettes the show organisers pick so please do not blame the rosette companies. Whilst i will agree with you all about the cost of entry fees etc and winning a standard rosette we do have to appreciate that show organisers have a lot of other overheads: ie judges fees, hiring of equipment, hiring show grounds, printing, advertising and the main killer Insurance and if classes arent well supported they do sometimes also run at a loss and a lot of clubs use these events as fund raisers to be able to run future events. x

I think this is a very important thread as I too am sick of winning rubbish rosettes!!! At the end of the day I'm sure most of us don't go to the show for the prize money because if we did, we mgiht as well not bother going in the first place as it costs stupid amounts to show these days!
I agree, the county shows can learn a lot from the local shows!

Please dont blame rosette makers for small, cheap rosettes - we supply what is ordered and generally with very little time. We then have to wait (sometimes for a very long time) to be paid!
I love to win rosettes - My personal pet hate is to win a rosette with the pin squashed flat to the back - the whole rosette will fall off before I get back to the horsebox!
We make superb quality rosettes and sashes and charge a fair price for them - I like to make sure that my staff get more than the minimum wage - I feel that is only fair if they do a good job they should be rewarded for it.
Shows are increasingly struggling to break even - lets hope that the days of the large rosette is not gone forever.

I was going to mention bakewell we too had one a few years ago really small. Derbys are not bad 2 tier moderate tails and always new !!!!!! Notts derbys are just fab, heavy satin ribbon, large centres 2 contrasting tiers and long tails, must admit we do get complimented on those xxx and our supreme of show ones are like this

I am a rosette maker and totally agree with sidesaddlelady, we can only supply what the organisers want!!! I would love it if all my orders were for 3,4,5 tier rosettes but unfortunately they're not . If show organisers are willing to pay for good quality rosettes then rosettes suppliers are more than happy to make them!!!!

Two local RCs I've been/ am involved with (Show Team NW & Mids and Grange Horse Shows) both have fantastic rosettes. In each case the main organiser actually makes the rosettes and takes pride (deservedly!) in their quality.
Cerys is always slightly disappointed to go somewhere else and get a "standard" boring rosette - although I have to say, pride of place is her first ever Clear Round rosette, which is tiny and single tier with a safety pin on the back - she often wears that on her clothes ;D
