I still go out with the hunt but it is nowhere near the same buzz as a real chase across the land, knowing it is all pre laid takes the excitement away from it. I would love to see the ban overturned!!!

This is not how most hunts are hunting now, I dont think. Drag hunting uses pre-laid trails, but the actual hunts are still "hunting" live, but just in a slightly different way to meet the restrictions of the laws introduced in 2004. It is great that they have managed to keep going in at least some form for the sake of the whole economy that relies on hunting.
In my experience of hunting since the ban, it has not made much difference to the experience as a horse follower.
If you believe all the polls then it is highly likely that the tories will get back in power in the next election (2009 or 2010), and highly likely that the ban will then be reversed. But I dont think anything will change until then, it would be a loss of face and potential loss of voters for the labour party if they were to change their minds on this issue.

Have a karma, jemsyd! ;D Yes, the way things are going it is quite possible that the Tories could get in next time. Trouble is, that 'tho David Cameron is a really good bloke and believes in true democracy I think it is a pity that he comes across as a typical public school-boy which is not going to win over votes from the dyed-in-the-wool labour voters. He has said that he will repeal the ban if and when he comes to office but we could have a long wait. I do hope I am wrong, 'tho.

We are still hunting proper style and have more members than ever. What ban? The police (do we still have them?) are not interested in anything that involves mud and rain.

The police down are way are definitely showing their presence at the hunts - but more to make sure there is no trouble from the antis than anything else !! Although I think in home counties area we are prob more careful about how we hunt than in more truely rural areas of the country.

Have a karma. Most horses love hunting our 15.2.h. whips in she qualified for hoys as a small last year but her real love is watching hounds and jumping next year will have a pop at some open workers. My first grey loved hunting I used to equate it to going to a rave.!! he was high for days afterwards.

Otis Ferry is still in prison, remanded in custody by some spiteful magistrate or judge , probably selected for their anti-hunting views. Can you believe we live in such a petty vindictive country where a decent chap like Otis is incarcerated and probably will have been for six months by the time his case is heard? Of course if he were a benefit scrounging layabout scumbag who stole, or kicked some defenceless old person senseless he'd probably have been out on bail, like the great animal loving James Gray of Amersham. The sooner we get rid of this rotten corrupt government the better. Ban Brown, I say.

will someone tell me how some animals lives are worth less than others? chasing a fox to its death seams to be acceptable, where as if it was a dog or cat of similar size there would be uproar? i am neither for or against, but am genuinely curious why an exhausting death full of fear is an acceptable fate for a fox?
i would like to ad (before being shot down in flames) that i farm, have sheep and NEVER in 30 years known a fox to take a live lamb, before that is thrown in as an excuse

Well here goes, and no-one shoot me down on this either. Fox hunting is a natural way of taking out the sick and injured fox cause if the fox is healthy there is no chance you'll catch it. Also hunting is also a natural way of maintaining the countryside the hegdes, keeps them short. Most hunts also offer great FREE services for the farmers if they let them hunt through there land, like properley dissposing of dead animals etc which is good as it means the farmer doesnt have dead poultry and doesnt have to fork out alot of money for the disposal of livestock. Anyone else agree?

so seems everyone here are very bloodthirsty so should we ban the ban on dog fighting and badger baiting foxes have a perpose in the countryside and removing our preditors is going to be over run with rabbits and rats oh and garbage that we as humans drop to encourage erbon foxes

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I would in no way try and force others to agree with me on such a complex issue.
But to give my own opinion, I would argue that some form of population control of foxes IS required since they have no natural predators and can quickly become a pest both in urban and rural areas. Many farmers do have trouble with foxes taking livestock (lambs, chickens, etc) and this is one of the reasons why the farmers are happy for the hunt to go over their land. The alternatives methods of population control of foxes are both crueller to the fox (e.g. traps where the fox can lie injured for days and eventually die of starvation/thirst) and also are indiscriminate so there is no form of natural selection as there is with hunting. I am sure anyone who has ever been hunting knows that you do not catch 100% of the foxes which you pick up the scent for. You probably only ever get less than half if that, knowing that the fit and cunning will get away !
Some people then argue - well why make a sport out of it ? One answer is - why not ? Another more practical answer is to financially support the hunting. To pay the salaries of the hunts staff, to feed the hounds and the horses etc.
Hunting has never had the intention of eliminating the fox entirely, but purely as a form of population control. So the predator will still exist within the food chain and serve its purpose within the countryside but just in a more controlled number.

Anyone had a fox get in with their tame and much loved hens ? We have. Carnage. 20 hens all with their heads off and not one eaten. Who is the more blood thirsty?

Lexy, you explained that perfectly. If the hunting of foxes continues to be banned then the up-keep of the countryside will suffer. The fox-population will rise enormously and more and more foxes will be forced into towns where there are easy pickings.
Sooner or later the antis/townies will be complaining about being over-run with urban foxes. These very cunning and clever creatures will not only be infecting their beloved pets with mange, they'll be causing complete havoc in private gardens and parks and in general creating merry hell. THEN they'll wish hunting hadn't been banned.
Does anyone remember reading a wonderful article on hunting in H&H by Noel Edmunds, a few years ago? I didn't save it and now wish I had. I have been in touch with his PA who says that as he has recently moved house he is unlikely to know where it is. I think I'll write to H&H and ask them. I've googled it but no joy.
