so are rats and mice... - yet people keep them as pets... Any one want to go hunting rats and mice? If you had rats running round your garden would you just happily let them live there? I don't see the anti fox hunting brigade screaming for rat poison to be banned.

not being funny or anything...but has anyone ever asked a pony if it wants a human on its back?? had a lady screaming at me a few years ago said it will be banned one day and i have to admit she did raise some valid points!!! anyhow the antis are off their heads some of them...shouting about cruelty, then beating horses and spraying pepper spray in their eyes, think some are a little confused!!! mmm? we lock horses in stables is that not cruel? some would say it is...cruelty comes in many forms and to be honest if i was a fox i'd rather go by dogs than be shot and injured and die slowly

Julz - people keep rabbits as pets too but they are also pests. We estimate about 200 minimum running round our 8 acres. Sure they are cute but they are dangerous - we regularly block up holes that woud break a ponies leg. We have someone round to shoot them and OH has had a few with an air rifle. Going to get the ferret man in next - reckon he can do 50 in a day. I've even sampled a few casseroled in red wine, So am I cruel then?!

Yes people keep rabbits.... but how many Giant Lop eared Rabbits do you see bounding across the countryside?
There is a difference between wild rabbits and pet ones... I havent ever eaten rabbit, nor do I want too... in the same way as i do not eat lamb. and no, Im not a vegetarian.
Incase you havent noticed (or perhaps forgotten) this thread is asking for everyones views on Fox Hunting.... My views are above, so why the need to slate me? am i not entitled to them?
Someone has to fight the fox's corner!

may i ask what is the difference between a pet rabbit and a wild one..they are all animals? dont think anyone is slating you they have their views too...but please enlighten me what is the difference between domestic and wild animals..they are only domestic because humans chose to make it that way, same as any domesticated animal??

no, there is a difference.... wild rabbits are small and grey, and pet rabbits come in a huge variety of colours, sizes, breeds.. long haird, short haired...
Im not sure of the metabolic difference. Im no expert and do not pretend to be.

so why do you feel their is a difference in the way theyre treated, or atleast thats how it looks to me, i'd rather see a cute little bunny live a short happy life in the wild than be squished into a cage 24/7..just my view on the subject, i hate animals being caged and even stabled to be honest (even though sometimes we occassionally bring ours in)

Julz I think you are labouring under the misapprehension that a ban on anything prevents it. If it did the prisons would be empty. The legislation we currently have has not saved a single fox. If anything they are now being mercilessly slaughtered as in many locations the relationships between farmers, shoots and the hunt have been stopped. Hunts cannot afford to process fallen stock for farmers because of the EU legislation on incinerators and waste. Therefore farmers have to pay for carcass collection. Making them even worse off. The gamekeepers used to let many foxes go to provide sport for the hunt but also to ensure only the fittest foxes survived, discouraging the spread of the awful sarcoptic mange now so prevalent. As foxes kill so many other valuable animals and birds they are now shot with no chance of escape whatsoever. I love all animals enough that I never want to see one suffer. Even a fly in the water trough gets fished out but I am not sentimental enough to believe that no animal should die for the sake of my conscience. The ban has not saved a single fox FROM BEING KILLED. If you want to know what hunts really do, not just the fancy bit about chasing foxes in a red coat. Go to your local kennels on a Monday morning when the huntsman has had to do the fallen stock round see who has to deal with all the cute baby lambs, calves and yes foals that cannot be processed by licensed slaughter houses. No one else does it because they can't. What would you have happen to those animals?
And on the subject of rabbits, this country went through the war eating rabbits. Even with mixamatosis. We are very lucky to live in abundance.

i have to say when i was a teenager i was involved with an anti fox hunting thing, mainly for homework, but i was so against it...until i really learnt about the "behind the scenes" side of things, i think if more people learned all there is to know about it they could sit on the fence a little more comfortably..as i do now! i saw my friends lambs massacred when i was 13/14, it was vile.

I absolutely love hunting !!!!! although they have never actually caught anything while i have been there !!!!!! lol !!!! i think its a shame to ban such a traditional english sport. And as for them protesters.... animal lovers ive seen them scaring the horses ... hitting them with banners .... they make me sick. i think the government should get their priorities right and concentrate on more important issues. we've been out following our hunt and they've scared the horses and the hounds, they even jumped out in front of one horse waving a banner it spooked and took off(i can't blame it really ugly guy waving the banner). they really need bringing down a peg or to because they think they are helping the animals but hitting a horse with a banner and scaring aren't going to help it i mean what has the horse ever done to you. and the killed Trevor Morse when they hit him with the Gyro-copter blade. Ban the Ban and Ban the anti's!

And? were they vixens with babies? do they even know it? if they were then it wasnt just 2 was it? 2 may have been killed but as many as 6 more could have starved to death.... This is why there is a hunting 'season' as hunting stops before cubs are born.

I thick the ban should be bannd, come on the police have even said they arnt going to worry about it no more, so it time for all the anti against hunting to give up. Look 2 (sorry if i am wrong) case have gone to court and they have been chuckd out, so i think we are winning. I have grown wid hunting in my blood and never will forget about it. Showing in the summer and hunting in winter. Lets all get out there and do what we enjoy doing in the winter. Tally ho

Interesting to read another forum and their views on this old question. Let me first say I am definitely pro hunting having worked with hunters most of my working life also been a hunt supporter club secretary for nearly 10 years and so on so I was very impressed with the replies from Armada and Hollycane; they stood out but there were many similar veined replies . As to repealing the ban, many people that know what they're talking about are thinking that perhaps 'tidying up' the ban as it stands at present could be the way forward rather than an absolute repeal because if we go for a repeal and get it, there is a grave chance of when labour get in again in the future, they will just repeat the ban but the next time, putting right (in their view) all the loopholes they have found in this one. Make no mistake, if they do that, it would be curtains for hunting permanently, certainly far worse than it is at present where a vast majority of packs have been left relatively unscathed although I know the southern packs have been very hard hit with regard to police and sab' presence. It's a difficult one to call. My immediate reaction would be to repeal but looking at the deeper picture for the future, perhaps we just have to be more cunning than the actual fox this time! Food for thought?
BTW, what's all this karma and smiting business, sounds double Dutch to me as a newbie?!

We as a family are totally pro BUT do people think that if the ban if reprived that the antis will all start again, they absolutly terrified our children, saying to one when he fell off "hope you've broke your f*****g neck!" wot lovely people!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the situation was left as it is now may be they would stay away, at this moment in time we are bothered by none, lucky us!
Up the Torries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never been hunting as I am a wimp of a rider and I also worry about ponies legs etc.
I am voting neutral as, to be honest, I don't know enough to make an imformed decision. I do think a lot of people are against it without looking at the facts and examining the damage they do and to what extent and I think they should also keep their mouths shut until they do so.

Must add there does seem to be a massive vote against fox hunting on this site and that rather surprises me as the majority seem to support it in their written opinion.
Is that poll right?

The "hunt monitors" as Blair called them are very active, terspassing on private property, harrassing people,as they still think they are above the Law.

To anyone that wants to keep the ban come to the countryside and see how many foxes THERE AREN'T. Thanks to the ban it's open season on foxes all year round. The gamekeeper on the shoot on the farm next door has shot 18 foxes. The gamekeeper next door to my local MFH has shot 30 in less than 5 months. If you think banning foxhunting is saving foxes, forget it. Foxes are now an endangered species. And if you want to know about the real job that hunting kennels do, go down first thing on a Monday morning and see the fallen stock being brought in. By fallen stock I mean the tiny baby lambs, pigs and sheep that died over the weekend. The farmers cannot take them anywhere else because of EU law. Ask your local huntsman how many times he has been called out on the weekend or in unsociable hours to PTS a cow, sheep, pig or a horse because the VET on duty has not got a firearms license.
Please look at the whole picture and find out the facts and the whole story before you condemn fox hunting.

sageandonion, i had to read the thread twice, it is in favour of hunting, i too have worked many years in hunting yards, perks of the job having 3 days a week hunting on some fabulous horses, those were the days. hunting has been the making of so many horses and my old boss must be turning in his grave at the ban, whatever happened to hundreds of years of tradition, who are the government to tell us its all over? and more to the point WHATS NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
