Remember being totally trollied with Roy Triggs groom at Bath & West and breaking into some old war planes which were part of a display and pretendin to fly them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That long walk from the stables to the main arena collecting ring at Hickstead and going over that little wooden bridge!!! Also lots of teenage show pony jockies at Wembley sitting up behind where the band were and them throwing maltesers down onto the drums!!!!

Ha ha I remember being unceremoniously dumped in a tescos supermarket trolly at Hereford when we went to Fayre Oaks many moons ago and whizzed around the football ground carpark. I might have found it funny if I hadn't been sober and my abducters p*ssed as newts and in hysterics!! I came over all Marge Proops and tried to moralise about the demon drink much to their amusement.

Wembley was the ultimate show, going back to the outside cinders to the flappy tents and the smell of the indoor arena, even the drive through London had some magic about it the clip clop on tarmac waiting for the early exercise.....could go on and on. I also loved the daily program and getting the SJ inserts. Seeing some fabulous horses and ponies and to be wandering around the same place as Harvey Smith, David Broom the Schokamole brothers and seeing their fantastic horses, I'm sure the younger generation have the same feelings but I feel the 80s & 90s had some real superstars on show with real international riders. Oh and the anticipation of which horse in your class was called forward for the 'Saddle of Honour' in the years prior to the clipped / oil slick look of today, luckily I had a few forward over the years and have won it. For those of you recalling Cratfield Bobby dazzler where in the scheme of things did Davina fit in as he went to Wembley from her yard. as I did him during his stay and I though he was there a while but my memory may be a little dodgy. As for the Champions well there are so many that where truly stunning and would more than hold their own today I'm thinking of, The Brigadier - Elite -Seebrook - See Lighthingyer - Classic Tales - Kings Warrior - Hunting Eve - LLanarth Flying Comet - Harmony Bubbling Champagne - Gaylord of Keston - Gunnerby Aalbourg Elegant - Meridiana - JCB - Grandstand - Superted - Just William - Apollo - Rye Tangle - Formidable - Absolutely fabulous - Just where do you stop?

I would have loved to see Holly of Spring, only ever saw photos, my Best Man of Spring was one of her last babies, not quite her level but an absolute star sidesaddle and would have done a great veterans class, sadly mutilated in a dog attack out hacking . She still is a legend! I've just found a bunch of BSPS year books from 1983 - 88 which entertains the girls to see the old photos. was your pony a charming Grey?! -if so are you Jo? I have a HOS daughter, by Minkino, she is an absolute delight

Dont remember Dazzle ever going to Davinas when the Whites owned him,he was totally home produced, but he was sold when Helen Baker was out of the class as there was no jockey for him.Cant remember who bought him though, but I think he died when he was about 14/15

I'm with the 'really old brigade' I'm afraid!! So much so that I am not sure what are memories and what are dreams!!!! early senile dementia I think lol! My earliest memories as well are of Pat Smythe; Caroline Bradley; David Broome etc and of course Uncle Max. I still think my earliest memory of show ponies was at Wembley on a trip with my pony club and being mesmerised by these exquisite creatures. I am sure I remember Tony Newbury on China Tea, a grey show pony? which I fell in love with - does anyone else remember this one? I am sure Chloe stayed at Joyce's once en route to a show and Joyce kindly showed her around and she saw a picture of him! This and then when Chloe was tiny going to Wembley and seeing Drayton Penny Royal win the show ponies made me vow that one day we would own or Chloe would ride one of these lovely animals! I also remember the queues for the phone boxes at Peterborough - particularly for GCSE and A level results!!! Rose coloured glasses but did we all seem to have more fun then?

You didn't qualify for HOYS or any of the many summer champs it was just Wembley or Peterborough!

Hi Lils yes Manny (Best Man of Spring) was a lovely grey, really floaty and very comfy perfect for side saddle with a big front but maybe not pretty enough in the head to go to past county level as a show pony. I'm not a "Jo" but I have a feeling we bought him from a Jo - could be wrong it was a very long time ago and I was only 15! We did really well in side saddle even had photo in Horse and Hound (one of the most exciting things to happen to me!!) but like i said sadly he was attacked by a dog when we were out hacking and was scarred mentally and physically so we retired him to a friend in Wales. Funny with so many champs now but I remember only having RIHS (at White City and then Birmingham), Wembley or Peterborough to go for and how exciting that was!!!

Brindlerainbow you are obviously originally form the same neck of the woods as me. i lived down the road, well sort of form the whites, in fact I am sure i can remember having a crush on Peter! I loved thier ponies, especially bobby dazzler. My memories of younger days are similar. spent a good par of my childhood at hickstead with my dad. he bought us members tickets, how I loved mingling with the'stars'! Only rode there once myself on a small hack, came last but I got a lovely rosette. My chidlren found it the other day and asked me if I was an international show jumper when i was younger, hilarious! Other memories include posh picnics with show pony family I once worked for, agian getting up at stupid o,clock for shows. I would have to talk all the way home to Mrs J who drove the horsebox to keep her awakeI am sure I must ahve said a lot of rubbish. Getting the chance to ahck out on thier beautifull ponies, I was a lot smaller then! My gorgeous misty morning the most beautifull grey ever bred. Doing side saddle course at Lynn Russells was fab! Oh and spending time with overatdaknee drinking tea with milk that had just literally come from the cows in the next shed! My mothers heavenly shetlands, winning a red rosette with a 3 year old at Surrey County like winning HOYS to me! Seeing Holly of spring at Wembley go down the centre in the spotlight, totally breathtaking. Used to wear my hair like Cathryn Cooper in two bunches when I was riding my own ponies as I sooo wanted to be her! Mad things you do as a child.

Are you all smiling as you post about your memories, because reading them just feels as though there is a lot of happiness in your posts, does that make sense?? I'm sure there was much more camaraderie all those years ago,and people genuinely appreciated the "top class" ponies and horses in whatever class and gave them the credit they truly deserved.

They were really great days and it's made me smile to think of it, but who's to say our children won't look back in just the same way in a few years, my daughters are completely in awe at Hoys and Olympia to watch! I often read the posts and to be honest smirk as things haven't changed in some ways - except alot more money in the whole thing anda lot more people involved. One of my show ponies was 14hh so small and it did make a difference against the up to height(over height in some cases) ponies, people moaned about height then too, particularly in the SHP, and we certainly all knew that certain colour browbands in a class were more likely to qualify if nothing went wrong with their ponies but we didnt' really care as we did it for fun and never really expected much, any placing at a big show was a bonus and beating a producer was always an amazing feeling!!! We just didnt' have a forum to vent our feelings, it was done in the bar after a few drinks x

Well cheetham I can tell you exactly where he is as my daughter judged him last week in th eSHP classes at Blakesley and I was stewarding! He is still owned by the Stockley family, it was Lucinda (Tuffy) who used to ride him. He is now passing on his expertise to other lucky little girls. He looked great for his age, must be in his 20's and still had his ears pricked as he strutted his stuff in the ring. It was a pleasure to see him still obviously enjoying himself and living an active life.
