As alot of us like to think back to the "old" days I thought it might be nice to share our memories of ponies/horses,people and shows from way back when!!!!! So here goes......... Getting up at stupid o'clock at Wembley to use the main arena for excercising!!!! Living on doughnuts, crepes and toasted sandwiches at shows and not putting any weight on!!!! ;D Drinking down at The Castle during the Hickstead meetings and then on to Cinderellas just down the road Brown Buzzard going under the spotlight at HOYS - breathtaking All the wonderful showponies from that era - Cusop Heiress,Creden Keepsake,Chirk Caviar,Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant,Groundhills Amazing Grace,Runnings Park Hill Star. And the showhunters - Flashman,Dual Gold,Elite,Periglen,Seabrook,Kings Warrior Never forget being at Hickstead and watching Ryans Son win the Derby and all the other great showjumpers - Pennwood Forge Mill,Philco,Sportsman,Diester,Boomerang. Happy days Im sure I'll remember loads more in a minute!!!!!

Brindlerainbow just found this after continuing reminiscing on the show ponies lack of limb thread! I remember Stella Harris and the Cratfield ponies well - I always wanted Cratfield Bobby Dazzler, he always beat me astride but side saddle we use to trade places but I would have loved to have him. Freezing wet cold windy Peterborough for the BSPS Champs (the only one there was the really) eating tonnes of crepes as it was all there was that was edible and everyone in the grandstand wearing those "bopper" head band things!!! BLimey I am seriously old. When HOYS was termed 'Wembley' all season...

Small world isnt' it weird! I've been out of horses for nearly 20 yrs and back again with the girls and their ponies it's so funny bumping into people I use to ride with who are now, like me, running around with the kids, most haven't changed a bit unlike me, sadly certainly couldn't get on a hack now I'd squish it! Good to know Dazzle was lovely at home too, I thought he would have been he just had the kindest big brown eyes and was a living rocking horse. I hadnt' realised Helen had him, she is such a fab rider I had hacks with her when she had Foxy - she is someone I always look up to and which I was half as good.

I would have loved to see Holly of Spring, only ever saw photos, my Best Man of Spring was one of her last babies, not quite her level but an absolute star sidesaddle and would have done a great veterans class, sadly mutilated in a dog attack out hacking . She still is a legend! I've just found a bunch of BSPS year books from 1983 - 88 which entertains the girls to see the old photos.

You funny young things, I remember Pat Smythe and was thrilled when Tosca her showjumper had a foal called Lucia. I also remember Nicefella, who had a flick back style over jumps with a buck on landing very often too.
Does anyone else remember much later a wonderful graceful showjumper called Tigre? He just floated. I saw Mister Softee at Blackpool show once. He was in the stable and looked like he could do with four new legs. That put me off showjumping a little when i saw what it did to some horses.
I still have my first trophy, a cheap little cup handed to me on 23rd August 1958 for Dolly Daydream, best child's pony. I think she was an ex-pit pony but I knew should do absolutely anything. Unfortunately, she had no mouth and I had no saddle, but I did acquire a very good seat.

Tigre was just beautiful, remember the late great Caroline Bradley riding him, some of the other showjumpers of the time I remember were of course Ryans Son, Boomerang and Kerrygold with Eddie Macken, Harvey's famous 'v' sign at hickstead. Also can anyone remember the name of the fellow that used to ride 'Kelso Mulga Bill', it was a clydesdale cross that used to showjump. This was back in the days when the showjumpers had proper names!
I was at wembley when See Lighthingyer took the hunter championship, also remember being in floods of tears the year Milton retired, when he made a surprise appearance at olympia - 'Simply the Best' can still reduce me to tears even now!
Also recall, think it may well have been at Moorgreen Show, admiring Graham Fletcher's rear view in a pair of very tight white breeches, but this was a good few years ago!

That's him, thanks! I couldn't think for the life of me!
They'd come into the ring and you'd think - what the bloomin heck - but they'd show a clean pair of heels to a lot of the blood horses!

And do you remember the shock and outrage when horses first started to wear their sponsors name ... remember the Sanyo team and the fantastic Sanmar?

I remember show jumping my pony at Andrew Fielders and being in the same class as the Whitakers! My pony could be brilliant or an absolute cow but I remember overhearing Pa Whitaker admiring her and her style(was on a good day - she could be very difficult and hormonal!) - proudest day of my life lol!!!

That's so funny can you imagine how the current politically correct crowd would take to that generation of Show Jumpers!!! I'd forgotten half that lot - Ryans Son was another of the greats (Oh and AHA and Duran Duran of course!) where would it be without the sponsorship that started back then hard to imagine.

I loved Anglezarke, a big white faced horse that Malcolm Pyrah rode.
Remember some lovely ponies at bsps champs, runnings park brut being one of my faces, anda big liver chestnut called Rochester.
Going to equifest this yr and sleeping in wagon, will be a trip back in time. Must be over 20 yrs since I stayed at Peterborough, have vivid memories of choc & nut crepes and snogging at the disco in the evening lol

Ahh, happy times the BSPS disco, forgotten about that Vodka and orange made with neat squash not juice yuck and snogging some rather dubious characters, and the BSPS beauty pageant, remember that sashes and all? OMG my parents must have been mad letting us loose! Running Park Brut was lovely, one of my faves was Parkwave Prince Ranier he always had such an amazing presence.

Oooh yes Anglezark and Tigre and also Hydrophane Coldstream ridden by Derek Ricketts the horse always had 2 grooms with him as he was quite a sparky chap!!! Because I used to hang out with a few of the showjumping grooms I knew alot of the horses by their stable names, Tigre was Felix and im sure they called Anglezark, Lion because he was a vicious bugger!!! Ryans Son was just Ryan!! Charlie Moffat died earlier this year I lived on those choc & nut crepes!!! they were lush. And there was always plenty of snogging to be had at stay away shows.................................
