o yes those were the days. hobnobbing with good old Harvey Smith. And all his swearing lol Having tea with all the top show jumpers in the VIP tent. Giving out trophies to the working hunting pony classes.at the Abbey park show. Any one remember that show? Being treated like the Queen ;D because my Granddad and Auntie where at the time well known in the horse world. Hunting times when i did not have any fear. Going to posh high teas at Caleb's houses. funny always remember the beetroot sliced on a decorative China plate ,thought at the time very old fashioned. 4 of us taking my pony to be gelded down the road. he was strong. Being blooded at the age of 8, still got the tail. eek hided now.lot softer in me old age. still hobnobbing with afew now. but they are as down to earth like me. not what some think.

£12 a week - I'm impressed!! I remember daring to ask for my board and lodging back which I'd paid for in advance, surprisingly enough, she said, 'No'. I remember she always called her daughter Mrs (whatever her last name was) - very strange. I saw the pic of Bounce - he was wonderful wasn't he. :-)

just caught up with this thread.
we used to showjump at Hilton Park Arena in the 80's when Steven Hadley ran it. What was the name of the chestnut (mare?) he used to ride?

I was allowed to go to a few shows with Mrs H and her daughter Arabella when they were showing Oakley Glorious Twelfth, Glory (out of Bubbles) which I think was her next pony after Lulu (Oakley Spring Lullaby). There was a pic of Arabella and Lulu on the cover of Showing World (I think it was called that back then) and Mrs C. showed everyone!!

I was at Mrs C's in the spring of 1979 - one of Bounce's offspring (a colt) was there, but I can't think what he was called. Any ideas?

As alot of us like to think back to the "old" days I thought it might be nice to share our memories of ponies/horses,people and shows from way back when!!!!! So here goes......... Getting up at stupid o'clock at Wembley to use the main arena for excercising!!!! Living on doughnuts, crepes and toasted sandwiches at shows and not putting any weight on!!!! ;D Drinking down at The Castle during the Hickstead meetings and then on to Cinderellas just down the road Brown Buzzard going under the spotlight at HOYS - breathtaking All the wonderful showponies from that era - Cusop Heiress,Creden Keepsake,Chirk Caviar,Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant,Groundhills Amazing Grace,Runnings Park Hill Star. And the showhunters - Flashman,Dual Gold,Elite,Periglen,Seabrook,Kings Warrior Never forget being at Hickstead and watching Ryans Son win the Derby and all the other great showjumpers - Pennwood Forge Mill,Philco,Sportsman,Diester,Boomerang. Happy days Im sure I'll remember loads more in a minute!!!!! I just found this, we used to go to Cinderella's... is it still there?? And I had a horse with Robert Oliver at that time, got to ride Black Gold, the large black show hack which I saw at Fairfield Stud. Kemply cob used to have to have a canvas rug on to stop him from ripping his rugs and you never went near Tentrek!! The 2 big shows were at Wembley and you could park next to the warm up area and watch the horses, it was so much more glamorous then and far less bit*hy .. Happy days

Yes I think Cinderella's is still there although it was the mid 80's last time I went in there. Kempley was a difficult horse to look after, he was extremely riggy and had killed sheep and a cow in the past and could never be turned out with other horses. He had to wear a bridle just to go from his box to the paddock!!

Anyone in the North West remember watching top class show jumping over the wonderful course at Arena North, where International Velvet was filmed?? My Dad took me to see it being filmed as a little girl, it was just magic and we would regularly go to watch Liz and Ted Edgar with the wonderful Everest horses, Harvey, Graham Fletcher, David Broome, Caroline Bradley and Alison Dawes.... just thinking about it, brings back the most magical memories!! What a lovely thread this has been

What a lovely thread this has been Despite living at Blackpool for a few years never got to Arena North but went past it on my way home from my groom's job in Sussex. Did get to Osbaldeston though, and Johnny Greenwood, David Bowen and Geoff Billington used to go. Actually spent more time at Lanni's at Moorhouses near Doncaster on a Friday night indoor jumping after I moved to Yorkshire. Had a cracking little cob who was an ex Whip's horse I bought to sell on. Shared the ride with a friend who was a Thalidomide victim, he provided the transport in exchange for some ring rides. A good arrangement for us both and certainly helped me to sell the cob at a good profit. We usually went clear in the novice but never stayed for the jump off as you needed to be there about 11pm, too late for me. Also the competition was incredibly tough, the likes of the Smiths, Barkers, Whittakers amongst others. Call me defeatist but it never seemed worth waiting for the jump off. They were good nights though, usually stopped off at the pub on the way home, left the cob in the trailer. Not sure I would do it now. Also remember the BSJA shows around Doncaster arranged by Mr Tomlinson with a rod of iron. All on grass, none of this surfaces rubbish. Again classes really took some winning.

As a kid I lived in Surrey, there was a big posh hotel ( Selsdon Park Hotel ) just up the road and it had a fabulous golf course with a bridleway running next to it with a little gap in the fence...............................my friends and me had many happy hours charging round the golf course on our ponies and sledging down the bunkers in the snow I have been there!! many years ago.
