Always add to the atmosphere at the big shows when that enormous cheer goes up as they enter the ring. I always thought Nick Skelton should have got that sort of fan club, very clever rider, I loved to watch him walk a course, you always knew where he was going the short way to make up a few seconds.

I still shed a tear when I think about him or read about him. He was such a character and didn't just do his famous bucks in the ring. He would do them out riding too. Funny lad.

I bought some wormers yesterday and remembered the days of worming with Frisk. Also jute rugs inside out to use as sweat rugs and also "thactching" under string vests.

Still have a video of me jumping my pony in the champs at Peterborough. Neither of us were great jumpers so it was mostly effort that got us round, with not much style, but I remember it being one of the great achievements of my life!
I also remember coming off one year and lying there winded, my mother shouting "get up, st johns ambulance are coming!" - she was terrified they'd load me into the ambulance and start cutting off jodhpurs & boots if they suspected a broken limb, I'd had a new pair of both for that year!!!

When the 80's & 90's are the "good old days" makes me realise how old I really am! Remember Sunsalve & Harvey Smith! Anyone interested, I've got loads of old horsey books from 60's eg "Nizfella What's in a name". PM if interested

Funnily enough, we were having a discussion last night as to whether Palomino was a breed or a colour. I went to a book I had as a child, to check - it had all the breeds in the front & all the showjumpers of the day in the back. Happy days!!

Crikey, i am old! I remember when you could only get bran oats and maize, sugarbeet tasted of sugar and haylage was not something you fed!
Old New Zealand rugs that weighed a ton when wet, jute rugs that had a great musty smell and rubbing down with straw.
We never had stables, weren't posh enough, we had stalls that you used to walk your horse in, rub down and tack up, and then reverse out of. Horses were out 24/7 and we used to pre wash them in the river before hosing them down and scrubbing with the old Gallop shampoo that smelled of bubble gum.
We never saw the vet and only used to worm once a year for bots, don't remember lammi being as common either. I remember my mum saying that if shoes went up to £4.00, we would only have fronts on. At Christmas we used to huddle around the telly watching Olympia and on Sundays rush back from the farm to watch Flambards!! Those were the days.......

Those were the days when a pony needed a maximum of 3 rugs! You had a jute rug, a green new zealand, and a holey sweat rug, and that was it! That was all you needed! If one got wet, you hung it up to dry and they wore one of the other ones in the meantime! And none of them had necks, or cross surcingles or tail flaps! And all our ponies lived despite this terrible neglect LOL!!

Flambards was brilliant! I don't understand why it isn't repeated. ITV4 is showing The Sweeny and Minder - why don't they show Flambards as well?

Millliesmum ,thinking back how easy it was to manage with so few rugs, can remember putting the jute rug on inside out and packing straw underneath to dry the pony, and when we clipped them out in the winter to do jumping they were absolutely fine without any lycra or fullnecks.hated scrubbing the jute rugs on a hot sunny day to get them clean,no rug wash firms then.

I too used to put my jute rug on inside out with straw underneath. I always used to give my pony a bran mash on a Sunday night!! We used to hack for miles to pony club rallies and hunt meets,we didnt have a lorry or a trailer in those days. Anyone who did have a trailer was really posh and if they had a lorry!!!! well never mind!!!! Those canvas NZ rugs were as stiff as a board and had a built in sircingle. There were no fancy bits just snaffles, pelhams and kimblewicks.Either drop noseband or cavesson and if your pony needed a grackle well it must be areal handful!!!! String girths!! Oh and yellow string gloves

When we moved house I found a stash of my old rugs I kept just in case (how ridiculous after 25 years!!!), talking of Keston Brown Sugar again - I still have his old rugs upstairs and they are a jute, a green new zealand and a Lavenham - along with a padded jute sircingle!!! Very posh in their day as we're near Chaskits who had just "invented" the spider thingy to do away with sircingles. Makes me laugh looking at our ponies hoods, etc....!

This thread is making me feel soooo old but at least iam not the only oldie, that s for sure. I have a picture upstairs of my lovely precious 'chicky' sporting her jute rug which i put old bed blankets underneath and I definitely remember putting straw (i think) under sweat rugs. it seems that travel boots are the in thing these days i loved my bandages and when we had the ponies last i still used them. old habits dont die My other old memory is that of feeding a pack of polos one year at wembley to Red Rum. It was so much easier then to mingle with the horses and ponies even if you were not a competitor, not the security you see at big shows now. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Someone on here said about the clip clop on tarmac at wembly (of aluminum plates) that took me right back to my childhood. i begged my dad to take me to wembley every year to watch the show ponies.Unfortunately never ever rode there and never groomed for anyone either. Always hoped that one day would be able to go there as an exhibitor with one of my children but hey ho! why do they not have HOYS at wembley anymore. that place had a totally irreplaceable atmosphere! )Did ride at peterborough though. got placed in a huge young riders class (the older version of intermediates) Still have rosette over 25 years later! I can still here the theme song in my head of white horses and some of the words, how sad is that! Not that I was ever really into showjumping, showing was always my thing but I did admire Caroline Bradley.

I love watching Marion Coakes on fantastic Stroller ( I still think he is number one best jumper in the world because he is such natural jumper without need schooling) Ann Moore on Psalm, Ted Edger on Uncle Max, Alan Oliver on Sweep they all are exciting to watch as they all have their own style where nowaday everybody is riding in same style which it's a rather boring to watch, no wonder why there is getting less crowd than it used to be. I remember Carolyn Cooper rode beautifully on stunning mover Holly Of Spring and don't remember anything that has move like her since then.

Talking of style, can anyone remember Annette Lewis on Tutein? Her style was, well, original to say the least! I always wondered how she stayed on! Found this, someone was looking after her that day: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3doU4evTxiE
