I lived in Sybills extension!!!! It had an ensuite bathroom but we weren't allowed to wash our hair in there we had to do it in the big old sink where we washed the grooming kits and the water was cold!!!!!!!!!!!! Mrs Rose cooked all the veg at the beginning of the week and it just got reheated each day, by the end of the week the greens were black!!!! The 70's and 80's were a wonderful time to be involved in showing, there didnt seem to be much nastiness, folk were genuinely pleased when someone had a big win. There was no glitter, no mega browbands and no short jackets!!!! And those ponies we have all mentioned were just phenominal, dont see many ponies like those any more

Certainly is Laura, great jockey got a tune out of just about everything, with out the need to be flat to the floor... Put a pony with limb under some of the present day judges and they would be clueless. Those of you who were at Oakley, can any of you remember Oakley Blowing Bubbles? I looked at RP-J fabulous photos and thought just when did the bum freezers come into fashion. They certainly don't improve the picture in my opinion. I may have pictures of Tomatin Forest Wind when I next get them out I will check and then let you know. I know its easy to look back with rose tinted glasses but I'm sure the quality of the show horses and ponies in general was better and there certainly was less reliance on 'products'

Baby oil and a stable rubber, sometimes a bit of chalk or in extreme dire need, tennis shoe whitener!

I remember being a working pupil for Mrs Colledge at the Oakley Stud and was there when Oakley Bubbling Fun was born! We called him 'fun' because he was always made everyone play with him. Oakley Bubbling Spring (Bounce) was the main stallion but we also had Gunthwaite Fleur De Cloche (Cloche) and Harmony Bubbling Champagne (Champers) as young stallions! Bounce was so breathtaking in the flesh as was his mother Bubbles; she was beautiful and so were all of her offspring. I'll pop a pic of Bounce on that Mrs C gave to me and you'll see how much more bone he has than the riding ponies of today! She used to always demand that her lorry was parked by the ringside and sometimes would sit me in the cab with her and we would pick out the winners in the ring. She'd ask me to tell her what I liked not why I liked it and said that some people can pick out a good pony (like she could) just because they liked the overall look of it and those people were the ones with a good 'eye' for a pony! She came from a very 'unhorsey' family so had no background knowledge but that didn't stop her from breeding the very best Riding Ponies that a lot of the SP/SHPs go back to today. Although in those days we didn't have the SHPs, they were either Riding Ponies or Working Hunter Ponies. I remember her taking me to vote for the first time and insisting I voted for Mrs Thatcher and telling me that she was going to be Prime Minister and that she would make history!! What a lovely story My family founded the stud on the Oakley lines, I wished I had met many of her ponies. I did work for Radway stud and rode Ensign out daily I then worked for Spinningdale Stud.

I can go back either further I remember Wildfire with David Broome an ex Kings Troop horse I think that was destined for Potters and David really got a good tune from it. Also Uncle Max a wild grey that entertained the public. ?What was the name please of the horse Jenny Loreston Clarke showed that went on to be a successfuil show jumper I saw it at Wembley. Can you all remember the cinder riding in rings at Wembley In the 1950's I think!!!!

yep were were there in the very late 70s and early 8os with a 14.2 sp called Reeva bubbles of Argal and the next year with 13,2, and that was the last year of the cinders also recall have photo taken for passes and then swapping them around so you could get your friends in , also going to the Indian in Wembley town , also getting somebody to call you with what clour the wristlet cord was and nipping into town to but it and then getting a fishing weight to be the seal -- ah happy happy days oh and also the foxhunter bar with the sawdust on the floor and the silver grill and the concret for the conf outside and running like hill up it so you would not get spun anybody else recall this

And the beautiful Oakley Bubbling Fun! I was at Sybils too but after Gail had left, Bounce and Fun were there along with another young chesnut colt that broke sybils arm! Did you get through to your extension through the back of the broom closet? (That was so bizarre!) I think Sybil must have been softening in her old age because I was allowed to live in the house, and i got one of Sandbourne royal ensigns first foals when I left. Isnt that Laura Richardson riding Fun? xxxshowponyxxx, how incredibly brave of you to refer to Mrs Colledge as "Sybil"! Even my Mother called her Mrs C, (except in private, when she'd refer to her as "Mrs Blue Rinse"! I recollest that she drove that sporty number she had like a bat out of hell in order to keep herself awake - she was lethal! I've only just hit on this thread - don't get me started, I'd be here for hours!

I remember the cinder rings at Wembley. One year it had rained heavily and all the stables around the cinder ring were flooded except Ted Edgars!!!! He had got his grooms to make a thick base in each of his stables from the cinders then put his bedding on top!!!!! I still have my grooms passes with the photos from 1982 and 1983 Sybil Colledge drove a Mercedes with the number plate SYB 1

Great thread! Remember the first 'tent' they used at Wembley? A bit of standing room at one end and the rest of us had to peer underneath or through cracks to watch our ponies go- agree the concrete run up area sorted a few out. As there seems to be folk with some very long memories on here could I ask for some help? Have had a picture sent in for the 'Yesteryear' section of the Show Horse Annual of a show hack winning its class at HOYS (small I believe) but not the exact year though early 80's, can anyone fill in the gaps? It is called Hilight. Cheers!

Hi Overtheknee the only small i think it might be is Buglars hi light bit cant recall if thet won wembley the only greys from that era i think that were ridden by a lady were Duke of newcastle - fab horse and once described as the best ride ever also could it maybe have been the wrong name as the photo looks like a young Jennie clarke on Catherstone lonley breeze also did Jennie not win with one of Alisa Peases hacks Lemmington Palova - if i ever win the lottery i will buy a Ailsa Pease bred horse

Haggis, think that is Chrissie Harris on it and the text that came along with pic said 1980? Something else was hack of the year that year so it may be a class winner- it could be a pic from RIHS?

I worked at Oakley Stud for Mrs College - I didn't last long - 6-8 weeks max! I shared a room with Lucinder and Jayne and Gail was the head girl who lived in the bungalow. Considering I was there for such a short time I have a lot of memories: obviously marmade sandwiches! Not being allowed to toast bread at lunchtime, not being allowed to have a bath in en suite but having to use Mrs C's bathroom and then being told off for leaving straw on the floor, thrashing nettles, strapping ponies until they shone and I was physically exhausted. My fav chicken being kicked in a stable and its leg being broken, Gail had to neck it and that night it was on my plate for dinner (I had the black bruised broken leg!). Borrowing Mrs C's mini van with no rear view mirror and dodgy brakes and going to the launderette. The most beautiful horses - Bubbling Spring, Bubbling On and a colt which cornered me in the stable and tried to eat me!!! Zaine, Good Golly Miss Molly a brood mare who weaved and drove me mad, a younger called Lilybret after Gail's mum. Hiding from Mrs C in the en suite after I had told where to put her job. Oh memories..... I could go on and on...I remember coming home and looking at my Arab colt and thinking how ugly he was and what a big head he had!! I had just got so used to seeing beautiful horses.

This last few days thread has had me digging in my old boxes! Chloe was fortunate enough to ride Langage Springtime in her last year in show ponies for Team Jago and (I believe) 'Sybil ' as she was called was one if not the last foal of Oakley Bubbling Spring. She was amazing and had the most amazing action and boy could she gallop! Our best memory was being 2nd at the RIHS in 2000 and her gallop in the main arena was as good as any hunters! She returned to stud in Devon as it was Chloe's last year and I still yearn for a baby hack from her!

I remember that car SYB 1L I thought it was with the gull wing doors - but she drove a little (possibly mini/metro) more often. And she had rows and rows of bottles of champagne in the cellar which she said were left over from her 21st!!

Burglar's Hi-light was definately BAY! I have a (snapshot) pic of him with Jennifer Wiliams on board at Wembley. 1970's (I'm on my mare Miss McGredy) I would suggest RIHS 1972 (my mare is wearing a red rosette; was 2nd that year at RIHS - the fact that it was at Wembley could confuse!) I'll have to faff around to see the image of the grey in question as they are blocked on this account.
NB Possibly the best "Lemington" which Jennie L-C rode (for Miss Betsy Profumo) was L Moon River. 'Hack of the Year' 1975. I was HG at Catherston that season; we had Hack, Dressage Horse and 'Combined Training' Horse/s of the Year. Some Feat!!

I remember her selling her Mercedes Sports car to Bernie Winters and buying a new gold coloured one. I was helping her to put the roof on and she closed it down on my fingers and walked off with the dogs. I was stuck there until she came back, it was bloody painful too! Does anyone remember having to repair her clothes and hem her skirts after a 12 hour day?? We used to dread her knocking on the door!! Also she drove that huge lorry and we had to keep her awake with lemon tea and pro-plus!! She was about 74 then!

Can't believe I shared a room with you! Hope it wasn't during the winter when we'd run out of Calor Gas So many girls came and went while I was there so she was used to being told where to stick her job!! I hated it when peeps left because I knew there would be even more work to do before the next recruit appeared...and I really liked most of them I remember her saying how much she liked me and that instead of me having to pay £5 per week for my keep and training, that I was now going to get my keep for free and I would be paid £2!!! And she even sent my mum some brightly coloured tea cloths as a present! Before I left (after two years) it had been increased to £12 per week!! I certainly didn't do it for the money....
