Yes I remember the Three Jays -AND the "Jill" books and Flicka.
Small insignificant claim to fame - I have sat on both Stroller and Our Nobby.
Favourite pony - Bramshott Midnight Sun (by Bubbly) like riding a little rocking horse. When I was at Catherston in my extreme youth I was 6½ stone because I'd just had glandular fever so I spent a whole year schooling small ponies.
And yes I remember all those showjumpers, because father was a BSJA judge in the 60s and I used to write for him as a child.
Anyone remember Andrew Fielder's Vibart? must have been some sort of heavy/cross, lookes like a donkey and kicked back like a mule, but could it jump!!
Happy days!!

Oh and blankets under jute rugs no matter how far forward you put them, how carefully you folded them and how tight the roller used to come out the back and trampled in the poo in the morning!!!
And creeping into the launderette on a sunday afternoon with said pooey blankets, bunging them in the machine and leaving very smartly before the smell got out!
When they invented the Lavenham rug it was a serious milestone -got one for Christmas when I was 18 and it changed my life!!
I always swore I wouldn't say this, but today's youngsters don't know they're born with all the wonderful stuff you can buy now!!

Does anyone remember the series of horse books set on dartmoor - I think the girl's name was Kit and the horse Wild something - I'd love to find them again. I also the remember the 3 Pullen-Thompson sisters who wrote loads of horsey books.

Gosh Annette Lewis had forgotten all about her.I wonder how many trainers tried to get her to keep her legs still. My heart was pumping watching that clip must have been very scary.

that was a lovely post to read.
I remember Milton the best as a kid, and being confused when his name had a prefix in front of it!
I also remember a pony from our local riding school who was huge and I always wanted to ride him as he was so big. When I went back later in life I found out he was only 13.1hh!!!

Oh our claim to fame was that Annette Lewis started her jumping career when she brought my sisters pony a little 13.2 for PC jumping!! Obviously went on to much bigger and greater things! I also remember hacking to shows all around South London and Kent with headcoller and rucksack on back which contained your picnic for day. Just imagine nowadays having to take all the show stuff with you on board pony!!!

Can any one remember who rode Carrolls Dundalk, was it Paul Darragh? I don't think it was Eddie Macken (my hero at the time) My M&M favourite has to be Rosenaharley Rossleague, winning Olympia, on two occasions I think.

Also I had the immense priviledge of being Desert Orchids Health Visitor. I was allowed to go in his box every time I went to visit the (human) baby.

Ah yes, Uncle Max, was an ex rodeo horse wasnt he? He used to go round the ring in a very disunited way and could jump off any leg, including hind legs, put a buck in over the jump, buck on landing and turn in one stride. They must have invented velcro by that time or the rider could never have stayed on. He was definitely entertaining.
I saw Ryans son compete and he was a lovely little horse. Just remembered Psalm, and April Love, both smashers too. You seemed to be more aware of their personalities then, or was it just me being younger? I do remember Dorian Williams being very rude about my mount once, as he announced me riding Thumper and then loudly said he should be a rabbit. I was only a child and it put me right off. I dont think I completed the course, but I was so angry afterwards, I took my 13.2 hh (dont understand metric) in the open jumping which was against the clock, a rare event then and came third. Felt much better afterwards.

Ah yes used to have a grade a showjumper so he jumped against the stars of the time Harvey Smith and David Broome not me riding though a friend rode him he was wonderful if less than stylish more Annette Lewis than David Broome that was for sure. Was offered loads of money for the horse by several jumpers including Lorna Clarke the three day eventerand turned it down. Mum used to get me up to watch HOYS as a kid when it was on Telly every night It was a real treat. Reading the Jill books etc and lots of Horsey TV programmes. I wasnt lucky enough to go to big shows until I was an adult but I do remember Tutein jumping off the top of the Derby bank at Hickstead and living to tell the tale some were not so lucky. Vibart and Andrew Fielding lived just up the road his kickbacks were more like handstands

This thread has been so lovely to read. My memories arent so grand as hoys im afraid. When i was eleven i used to charge friends 2p-(donation towards new supplies to come to my 'horse club' in my bedroom. In return my friends would be able to access all my horse books..look at my scrap books containing various cut outs of all the breeds and numerous postcards and play horsey quizzes....all with the Black Beauty album as background music ;D Weekends stood at the end of my road in all weathers waiting for my uncle to come pick me up to go spend the day at the local riding school. He was the riding teacher there and i had the joy of riding out the pony/horse that wasnt chosen by the customers (generally the naughtiest one)....then galloping down the moss with cries from my uncle..'jus grip wi' yer knees lass..you'l be fine!' When i got my first horse having ride and jump bareback until we could afford a saddle happy days!

As a kid I lived in Surrey, there was a big posh hotel ( Selsdon Park Hotel ) just up the road and it had a fabulous golf course with a bridleway running next to it with a little gap in the fence...............................my friends and me had many happy hours charging round the golf course on our ponies and sledging down the bunkers in the snow

Someone mentioned Andrew Fielder and Vibart. Thought you would be interested to know his grandaughter is now competing BSPS cradle stakes and Andrew does well dressage and eventing.

I remember Harvey Smith at Great Yorks - went in on first horse, made a b@lls of it, went in on second one and did the same. When same thing happened with 3rd horse he stormed out, jumped of the horse and abandoned it in the collecting ring and stomped of trampling the little group of young autograph hunters. Talkabout throwing the teddy out! I know it must have been sheer frustration but it did look funny!

Wow talk about memory lane, I qualified for both Wembly and Peterborough in my youth (got nowhere though!!) My favourite showjumper at that time was Lucky Strike I think it was ridden by Eddie Macken it used to be a hack I think and was absolutley beautiful but boy could it jump. I loved this thread makes me feel all warm and nostalgic

Outstanding memory for us was qualifying for first time for Olympia in 1989 with Sydserff Kate at the Northern Horse Show in a snaffle!
We bought her a new red travel rug and hired a grand horse box ..she sweat up on the journey down and arrived at Olympia a lovely shade of pink which we frantically tried to wash off in the evening before the performance.
The 'day' was a great experience but hair-raising in the atmosphere and to top it off,it snowed all the journey on the way back up North!
Could'nt face all that now!

I remember Cratfield Fairy Gold and Cratfield Fairytales but don't know what happened to them. Hat's off to you if you worked for Stella. She was a very hard task master but boy does she knows her stuff and her standards were and still are the highest.

Mrs Burt bought Cratfield Bobby Dazzler from Veronica White and we had him for 2 seasons. I can't remember who bought him though. He was lovely to do and ride but very spooky when hacked out!! I can remember seeing Bobby Dazzler, Keston Music, Cusop Harmony and Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant all looking out over their doors when you arrived at the yard in the morning! Veronica White had Nantcol Fantasy as a lead rein for Peter.... I can remember her being born! They also had the section B stallion Cawdor Kadett to produce under saddle for Mrs Cooke. They were fab times to be producing and showing ponies..... so many champions about!!! So many of the names I've gone on to judge!! So much fun!!!

Gunnerby Aalborg Elegant was one of my all time favourite ponies. Wish she had been looking out of my stable! More favorite oldies, Perryditch Temerity (I hacked her out once, whoo hoo!) Coveham Fascination and what was the gorgous 14.2hh that Lulu McAlpine used to ride?? Was there when Nick Skelton did that jump, atmosphere was totally electric!!!

Lovely memories RPJ I looked after Dazzle all the time he was at Veronicas he was a lovely pony, when Peter got fed up with showing and went show jumping Helen Baker took over the ride. The one and only time I rode sidesaddle was on Dazzle Nan ( Nantcol Fantasy ) was a sharp little thing!!! Cant remember what happened to her. Nursey I think that 14.2hh might have been Oakhalls Halloween, not certain though
